This has some of the most detailed and creative 2D animation in any Disney short ever. It's preposterous that it's not on Disney+ I want to see this in 4K
+davyon johnson There actually aren't any humans in _The Lion King_ movie universe. This short film has nothing to do with that story, save for the fact that Lebo M. was the driving musical force behind both projects. The song "One by One" is on the official soundtrack for _The Lion King_ but it isn't played in the actual movie, although it is in the live musical. A crossover of some sort would be beautiful indeed though.
davyon johnson From what I've heard about the DVD release, the creators said that there aren't any visible signs of human culture because they "wanted to keep the setting timeless" to paraphrase it. The kids in the video posted here are not part of nor stated to be elements of _The Lion King_ universe; it's a short film that might've been on a _The Lion king_ DVD release, but other than that, there definitely are no humans or human characters seen onscreen during any of the movies. There is a Broadway show where the lions are played by humans, and Lebo M.'s "One by One" is a song that is performed during the musical, since he wrote it as a spinoff song that was never used in the original film. (Would've been nice to see, though.)
This deserves to be so much bigger then it is! Doesn’t get the credit it deserves! It’s literally a forgotten gem😭💯✨ This is what it sounds like walking into the gates of Heaven💫
I remember watching this when I was in my very early teens, and it made me cry. I watched and admired the television and my ears nearly exploded with such an array of fantastic melody, it literally drew me to tears. Not only because it is absolutely stunning and artistic in every way, shape or form. Not because of it's remarkable beauty in it's simplicity. But because of the message that many miss in it. Those children have nothing...they grow up on nothing, they live on nothing. The one time they have a chance to have an unbelievable amount of fun and joy in the simplest event such as kite flying, and they still have the dignity to let their kites go. To give freedom to something that had given them so much happiness. I look around me today as I am nearing twenty three years old, and I'm ashamed of my generation. So much greed and disrespect. I wish we could give the things we dont appreciate to those who would, and learn to respect and appreciate the things we never needed in the first place.
So beautifully expressed Damion, I too feel the emotion and elation over this simple act. It touches a chord in all us that tap into it and resonates with joy as we too run with these children to the top of that hill and escape for a moment all the ugliness in this world!
Damion Locke And the movie being that mature gives a new light to appreciation. I rediscovered the video after seeing it years ago and I STILL shed a tear or two at the end. You are on point...to resemble the shanties of Swaziland and Desotho, to make something from nothing, to work together for the success of it and to let it go to shared with the world...something of extraordinary from their little village...I AM EMOTIONAL because of what I see in my daily life doesn't represent giving. If it starts with me, it should change.
When they sing this in the Lion King in Broadway to open the 2nd act the entire cast is around in the audience and balconies in traditional dress waving flags and banners and it is SO powerful and joyous, had no idea this animation and recording existed. 😭
I saw that show and this song with the puppetry and having the cast members among the audience...it was just so powerful! Lebo M's vocals are really awesome, especially in this short.
Everytime, emphasis on everytime, I listen and watch this song/video, I cry my eyes out. I still have yet to figure out why... Something in this song, in Lebo M's voice, in the children's voice and lyrics (granted I don't understand the language fully) connects me to a deep part of myself and it's always a high emotional moment.
I haven't watched this short in years i remember when i would watch this on my lion king 2 2 disc DVD back in the day and just bring it too my Grand parents house just brings back memories and nostalgia 😍
If it wasnt for Hans Zimmer bringing Lebo to America for the Lion King, i dont think that score would have been as great as it was. Best decision ever Hans!
infinityrose92 well fair enough but still if you were going to make a damn third movie and them being the Giants they are can definitely do that third movie
This was made about the time the Florida animation studio shut down. :( And it looked for sure that 2D animation was dead. This and The Little Matchgirl were meant to be prt of a more world-music themed Fantasia project that got cancelled in that mess. BUT, since then we have gotten a lot more into experimental animation blending 2D and 3D so here's hoping for another Fantasia down the line to celebrate that. ❤️
Don't you just love it when a piece like this makes you want to jump for joy and cry at the same time. Cought me off guard that Disney would have the balls to show a shanty town. This makes up for the Princess and the Frog. Beautifull music, touching story.
This came as an extra bonus from the special edition release of The Lion King 2 on dvd. It was meant to be a part of Fantasia 2006 but that project was canceled.
Came here immediately after watching the singing cast sing in an airport. Heard this song, and swore I've heard it before. So glad I found it again. I'm in tears.
Aww when I saw them release the kites it made me sad as a kid... 😢 but now I realized it's a message of "SOME DAY". they will be saved from poverty and hunger. 😇🤗
What makes this masterpiece so striking, beautiful and inspiring is the use of Earthy Colors to tell a story of Wind. The contrast of it with the cooler and darker colors from the beginning to display despair, desolation and dank transitioning to the vibrant and bright colors to show joy, jubilation and juventude. (Kickass alliteration, huh?) The air of creativity with the kids is probably the most wonderful aspect of the short. Imaginative. It's even hits closer to home seeing black kids like me because I was the same way growing up. I'm almost 30 and am almost moved to tears everytime I see this. There is a reason why my favorite Animator, Hayao Miyazaki, praised this short over others.
I accidentally stumbled upon this video and just realized that I have seen this short film when I was a child! Now when I see it, I finally see the meaning behind this story. I’m crying!!! 😭😭😭
Every time I watch this video, and I mean EVERY TIME, it brings tears to my eyes....completely uncontrollable feeling sweeps over me. I've listened to this song and watched this video countless times over the past 3 years or so and the feeling never changes.
Disney needs to make a movie about African people. The only Disney movies set in Africa are Tarzan (a movie about Europeans lost in the jungle) and the Lion King (a movie about animals). Give us an African movie about African people DISNEY!
Ahh brings back to much nostalgia from watching lion king 2 on DVD😭😭😭 and I thought it was pretty sad at first when I was kid but now looking at thie its truely beautiful and wish it would be a movie
I dream of someday reviving the Fantasia series... Because I believe it is the most beautiful, meaningful and modest pieces of animation in history... At least me. -3 Fantasia forever.
If Disney made a full length movie about South Africans, I bet it'll be twice as magical and wonderful than this master piece, all Disney and it's admires have to do is "dig a little dapper" ;)
Kelsey Curles how was that ignorant? They’ve made plenty of European fairy tale films and animal films as well/ sorry the lion king might be nice but it does barely any justice to the people in the CONTINENT of Africa.
I'm STILL crying from JUST watching "The Little Match Girl"! This IS NOT helping dry my tears... But this is making cry the SAME REASON "The Little Match Girl" made me cry... It's so BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! *bawls*
This video is beautiful. It's stuff like this that always gets me a bit. As fantastic as technology is, with as much as it lets us do, it's also ruined us in ways. Watching people - especially children - so happy in such simplicity makes it almost painful to realize the ways we entertain ourselves now. All they needed was a little imagination and each other. I wish I could see more like this in real life.
I think this emotional video refers to the end of South African Apartheid using metaphors, going from a dark gray to a bright multicolor, going from sadness to joy and going from oppressive hegemony to a full recognition of human diversity; let's not forget that Desmond Tutu declared South Africa "the country of the rainbow". The feather at the beginning is reminiscent of both the colorful geometry of the Ndebele people and the current South African flag.
A true piece of Africa and how much people there need hope to get by. Atleast hope to help them want to countinue on in theses times. God help those who need it most.
Once _Lorenzo_ comes to Blu-Ray this August, _One By One_ will become the only one of the four released _Fantasia World_ shorts still unavailable in HD. Does it sound fair of me to wish for _Black Panther_ to include it? (Although, Marvel Studios acts so cheap with bonus features, I'd feel rather surprised if this wish actually came true.)
One By One, Destino, The prince and the Pauper, and many other disney short films, the latter being one that came before a movie in theaters, are still not in hd widely available. destino's only release ever was the blu ray for fantasia 2000, and that's hard to find.
_The Prince and the Pauper_ predates _Fantasia World_ (and indeed, relies much more heavily on dialogue than a _Fantasia_ short does), and _Destino_ at least received some sort of HD release. When Disney included _One By One_ on the Blu-Ray of _The Lion King II: Simba's Pride_, it remained in standard definition, making an HD version of that even harder to find than one of _Destino_.
Wish Disney would make this into a full length movie. Hand drawn. Woudln't even need dialoug. They could just get some African singers together and have something along the lines of Fantasia.

I don't understand why this wasn't included in the Disney Short Films Collection set.
Yesssss
Yeah, the movie "Paper planes" should have been "Paper kites" or "Let's fly a kite" and this should have been a bonus feature "Short - one by one"
