The reason cube2 is squared that is a theoretical tesseract (a higher dimension cube i.e. cube²) which is why all the cubes are the same color. They are the same room, just at different points in time. It's a neat concept but execution was awful
Definitely gonna have to check out their podcast after finishing this. Maybe I can find some new recommendations in there to recommend for my bad movie podcast.
i highly recommend Oshi no Ko! I was pleasantly surprised to hear Alex mention it. The first episode is movie-length, but watching it will help you decide if you're interested in the rest of the series or not.
2:50 If anyone has never seen what Colin is referring to here, Best of the Worst with the Osteoporosis dance, you owe it to yourself to check that out. When Colin says he breaks and dies laughing, he ain't kidding XD.
I completely am on April's side with the first one. I love it so much. Its one of the only horror films I would give a 10 out of 10. The later sequels are definitely disappointing to say the least but hey we will always have that amazing original.
The irony that you would tell the writers of Cube 2: Hypercube "keep it simple, stupid", when you literally did not understand the movie because of how stupid you apparently are, is astonishing. Those weren't "spikes", nor ice crystals. If you paid attention and understood the first thing about what the Hypercube is, you'd know those were fields of space where time ran at a radically different speed. The couple aging to death ought to have showed you that time is a danger here. Those fields, when you put a body part into them, explode the part that all the blood is now rushing into at super speed. I knew that's what happened right away the first time I saw it, because I had read about a similar effect in science fiction before, and I have an active imagination. Hypercube is the absolute peak of the Cube franchise, but it is a horror movie that apparently only scares you if you truly have the wit to comprehend it. The crowning horror is when you see the nearly infinite structure at last, and realize that you never had a chance to figure out the puzzle. It subverts every expectation created by the first movie and surpasses its every goal, actually having a purpose and a meaning this time. It's both an experimental artificial reality they've created to study, and a convenient way to disappear their enemies. The true lasting horror that stays with me is in the tagline, a quote from the old woman you couldn't stand: "Some things were never meant to exist." That's why they shoot the sole escapee and survivor after recovering the recording unit. I think it's because they don't know what might have come back from unreality with her, and won't take that chance. I truly love Hypercube, and I think it really is necessary to have a grasp of wider science fiction heading into it to really appreciate it. I mean, how often do you get to see people get killed with quantum physics?
@@Semilion I don't even know what specific one you're referencing, is 'to be fair' another form of 'actually...'? Anyway I get called copypasta all the time. It seems to be a four syllable word for ideas too large to fit into small minds.
Regarding the unlimited possibilities for sequels exploring the core concept of the original film; it occurs to me that a fun premise would be for each room to contain a puzzle to be solved. It would be a bit like a feature length version of the scenes in Indiana Jones movies, where Indy has to solve a puzzle in order to avoid being killed by a trap.
Wait, Colin is the guy who voiced that loud screechy rodent-looking creature from The Wild? Wow. There was a behind-the-scenes bonus video on the DVD with him doing the voice and yelling at his coworkers. Obviously as part of the joke, but still. What a strange form of whiplash. I remember watching that clip several times.
Nice to hear other podcasters on the show - gives me the smallest of hope that me and my wife could join as guests in the future 😅 April and Colin were wonderful guests, I'm now going through their catalogue of reviews
Look, maybe it's not a great movie, but I just have a soft spot for Hypercube. It's so wild and crazy and memorable. I am a sucker for sci fi time travel shit, and that movie was all that. Regarding the acting, I can't say how bad it was, because I only ever watched it dubbed into German, which probably elevated the performances, since Germany has pretty good voice actors. But yeah, I just think this one was really memorable to me, because of the crazy shit that happens in it. The third one I remember seeing, but I forgot everything about it, except for the twist at the end.
Agreed. It saddened me a fair bit to hear the trio ragging on the second movie so much, to the extent that Adam said that giving the movie 1/10 was being generous. I mean, come on! It's not the worst movie ever made. It's a decent and entertaining bit of sci-fi gubbins, in my opinion.
I just have to mention, I loved The Wild as a kid, and actually didn’t grow up with the Madagascar movies, i thought the first one was less interesting but loved the penguins tv show. Anyways just wanted to give some credit where credit’s due, considering ppl seem to think of it as a reboot, as a kid I genuinely enjoyed it a lot, idk if its objectively that good but eh, it was memorable for me.
I am disappointed they didn’t call the sequel Cube Squared, but if they did that, they wouldn’t have been able to call it Hypercube, which would have been worse.
Best episode of the podcast. You guys were too hard on these movies though. The sequels weren't that bad! I'd rather have a new Cube movie every year than a Saw movie every year.
Its never gonna happen but my weeb dream is a neon genesis evangelion sardonicast episode. Im just so curious about what their thoughts on the end of eva movie would be...
Cube Zero is kind of underrated for me, even though it revealed some of the mysteries, it still didnt reveal all of it, and the main character was likable enough
I do like it, but the highlights of the film are where it is very clearly copying ideas from Brazil by Terry Gilliam. I feel like the idea is quite solid, but it's unfortunately a bit inconsistent in its execution and it could honestly have been a much better film if they'd focused more on the guys in the control room and cut down the amount of focus on the characters inside the cube. I also think that having the ending mirror the introduction of the autistic character from the first film is a bit tasteless. I understand what they were going for, but a non verbal autistic person is not the same as a neurotypical person after a lobotomy.
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 Absolutely. That part just flat-out sucks and it felt completely unnecessary. I will say I kinda liked the villainous cartoon villain in Cube Zero. Like it was high camp and I had fun with him. I also appreciated some of the gore effects in this one after the CGI mess that was Hypercube.
Speaking of the game developer in cube 2 looking like Todd Howard, did anyone else think the male lead in cube zero look like gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford?
Personally, i think cube zero is underratted, a massive improvement over hyper cube, its just so damn ambiguously silly, i love how dumb it gets as it goes on
There is a spectrum of good to bad CG nowadays, and it doesn't seem to have that much to do with budgets. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 looks waaaaaaay better than Antman 3.
I always assumed that hypercube was virtual and that the people physically were not there. I always assumed it was a construct on quantum computer. but then the ending would make no sense.
This is the closest we'll ever get to a YMS x RLM crossover and I'm here for it.
I couldn’t believe the thumbnail lol
"Don't stop believing..."
its happening.. the world is changing…
Idk about that. Jack from RLM seems to do heaps of guest appearances. I wouldn't be shocked if he showed up eventually.
I could see Jay and Adum eventually talking horror or some weirdo art stuff
All these Canadians, so lovely.
And one British man.
Perri Piper
When I read Colin from Canada, I was like, who the hell is that? Then i heard his voice. Oh, that Colin from Canada.
I was like holy shit I completely know who this guy is and have seen hours of him talking
I was like oh wow colin from canada but is he THE COLIN FROM CANADA!?
There’s only one Colin from Canada xD
The fact that the third Cube movie isn't called Cube³ is fucking insane to me.
That'd be redundant
@@AnoNymous-dh2sv like a third Cube movie!

It wasn't worth the name, there saving that gem for the reboot
I guess it's because Alien³ got there first.
Oh, that’s why we got Canadians as our guest. Because they couldn’t afford Rich Evan’s.
Not many could afford such a famous and illustrious name such as Rich Even!
Rich Evan's what? His car? His fashion sense?
Rich Evans must be earned, which is the singlemost hardest thing to do on this planet.
If you can't get Rich Evans, you get Poor Bruces
Wishful thinking, but fingers crossed for one of the RLM madlads to join the sards in the potential future.
Im praying for Jay

Colin and April were wonderful guests! I'd love to have them on more. Now to finally check out their podcast!
Colin from Canada? Ah, now I know why he did not reply when Mike was asking him about that Jason color grading 😂
He couldn't hear him.
I think I suggested Colin from Canada coming on a year or two ago and it finally happened and I'm so happy
Hearing Adam talk about Red Green made my heart swell with joy.
All three Canadians having dead black dots for eyes is a nice touch. Kinda like they are portrayed in South Park.
Holy shit you used the Eloise Cole clip for the thumbnail. Thank you, Adum.
Eloise Cole is dead!
I'M ON A HIIIIIIIGHWAY TO HELL
So basically,
The Cube sequels are the American Psycho 2 of sequels…
We must get Mike on the show
Honestly if any of the other hack frauds would show up, I think the likeliest one is Jay
@@janpopovic1773yeah Jay makes most sense. Mike and Rich seem like they wouldn't really care to. Jay too but less so
That'll never happen. Jay and rich maybe.
@@ColombianThunder His tastes allign most with the Sards. But yeah, unlikely
@sarcasticdude2320 True, he only appeared as a special guest on one Plinketto episode
Rlm better have Adam hosting a Saw trivia show eventually.
That much closer to getting Mike, Jay and Rich on the pod
i love this episode! so much positivity
I like that Alex still congratulates that Ender's Game's effect because I had the same reaction when I saw it.
The dynamic here was spot on! hoping for more episodes with April and Colin (from Canada) in the future.
one step closer to Adam guesting on RLM, dream come true
If you think about it, Cube²: Hypercube has the highest kill-count ever in a movie.
Infinite deaths is pretty insane, Jerry dies like 6 times
A crossover I was not expecting!
@sarcasticdude2320 I might be 👀
hope they get renowned curator of film bimmy ralph on episode 540

Three Canadians and their colonizer
Please, PLEASE, don't take this too seriously, I'm just jesting
It’s alright you said it right anyway regardless of jokey intentions 🤷♂️
In that sense they'd be colonizers unless they're native.
David Hewlett really made this film for me. A lot of the acting was just 'OK', but his performance really elevates the movie.
He elevated the fuck out of Stargate Atlantis. Glad he is still getting work.
This is the best episode since Ralph left no doubt
Yeah, it was so awesome when Ralph left, lol. That episode was so good.
