Shohei Ohtani is back, baby. In this bad boy, we're talking about The Year of Ohtani aka 2021 Shohei Ohtani and his Shohei Ohtani MVP campaign. This transcendent season was highlighted by Shohei Ohtani hitting and Shohei Ohtani pitching, but we'll also discuss other things like Shohei Ohtani stealing bases. He's fast! The Shohei Ohtani Statcast numbers are astounding. That's definitely one of many 2021 Shohei Ohtani highlights
Ohtani is revitalizing a two-way tradition that many associate with Babe Ruth, but as we'll learn in this episode of Baseball Bits, a Foolish Baseball production, Bullet Rogan may be a better comparison. He's a Hall of Famer and iconic two-way player even though he didn't play in MLB.
Some fans might be upset that Ohtani plays for the Angels. True, the Shohei Ohtani Angels were below .500, but their poor record certainly wasn't a reflection of Ohtani's production. He was the best hitter and starting pitcher in high leverage.
So is it the greatest MLB season ever? In some ways, yes. In some ways, maybe not. But you'll have to watch until the end to see what I mean.

One non recordable stat that Ohtani has, one that gave me a year of surprise, is the number of people who had become distant from baseball, or didn’t care about the sport, that his playing brought to the interest of baseball. He makes baseball fun for people who weren’t necessarily looking for it.
I fall into this camp. I grew up a fan of the nba and the nfl in the 90s...but was not a mlb watcher.

His draw is so insane. I went to a game last season where the Angels played the Mariners (two non-playoff teams) and people bought tickets right behind home plate despite being Dodger fans. They bought some of the most expensive tickets to cheer for a guy on a rival team
Yeah, I stopped watching in the early 2010s and came back when I heard a two way player was tearing the game up.
Lol, that's me, I never interested in mlb before I heard about ohtani.
Having seen Shohei play in person during the year: there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING that compares to how you can physically feel everyone on the edge of the seats whenever he steps on the mound, or in the box. The sense of focus and excitement that happened every single time he was facing off is something I will never forget

Tickets were basically dirt cheap which was awesome (thanks A’s!)
After he pitched for (I think 6 innings?) he went and played in right field for either one or two more innings
We sat right by the Angels dugout and it was a pretty amazing experience despite the game not being so exciting (took until the 7th for the first run to be scored)
While it wasn’t an amazing game for him offensively, he pitched a gem and still was one of the most exciting hitters I’ve ever gotten to see
I so agree with you, Scatty_! I got to go to about 6 games at Angels Stadium, and watched him pitch/hit in the same game twice! It was ELECTRIC! There is nothing like it, and I can't wait to go to many more games next season!
I can only imagine what that’s like. As a Mets fan I know how electric it is watching Jacob deGrom-I’ve never felt anything like it in all my sports viewing life-and I’m sure watching Ohtani is that turned up to an even more ridiculous level. Whether Jake’s pitching or at the plate it always feels like something amazing is happening and as great as he is, he’s nowhere near as special as Ohtani
Can’t wait for The Century of Ohtani where Shohei breaks all the records but the Angels never makes the playoffs

He’s going to fall off he’s rarely pitched in any season before last year so there’s no scouting report on him and he was one of the worst hitters in baseball in the second half.
They will never make it until they go back to being the California Angels or Anaheim Angels.

I really do love that in this video Bailey covered things that people usually overlook when talking about Shohei's season this year. The increase in pitch velocity in high leverage situation or in later innings, the speed on base paths despite his large frame, the amount of strikeouts he got on ball-called strikes that affects his BA tremendously and of course the underlying racist comments to disregard his achievements. Thanks Bailey for the video, what a great gift to close the year.

I wondered some about the .OPS allowed in high leverage spots. It didn't seem like there were many other big name pitchers on that list. Did the elite guys not qualify because they don't get in those situations enough (thinking of Burnes, Cole, Scherzer, deGrom, etc.)?
@@wwpjd28 Good question. In this case, it was all pitchers with a minimum 20 Games Started for the season. So that would include Burnes, Cole, and Scherzer, just not deGrom.
Burnes = .610 OPS against
Cole = .613 OPS against
Scherzer = .587 OPS against

This is the greatest opportunity the MLB has ever had. If they play their cards right every kid in the baseball watching world is going to want to grow up to be like Ohtani.
I mean Jackie Robinson showing up and finally opening up the door to some of the most incredible athletes we’ve ever seen was a pretty big deal too, but this is pretty awesome.

Nothing tops the son of sharecroppers coming from the Deep South, during the era of Jim Crow, starring in multiple sports in college, serving in freaking World War Two(in a segregated unit, no less), then convincing Branch Rickey and the Dodgers that he alone, out all of the black ball players in the nation had the strongest level of fortitude to withstand unprecedented levels of abuse, ignorance, and prejudice and single-handedly ushered in the era of integrated baseball paving the way for legends like Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Gibson, Henderson, Griffey and Bonds. He fundamentally changed the game of baseball forever.
But yeah, maybe in twenty years, there will be more two way players because of Shohei Ohtani. Like the OP said, it’s the biggest opportunity MLB has ever had.
As an Angels fan who watched almost every game of the 2021 season: THANK YOU for bringing the data to shed some light on the unfair ball/strike calls. That was pissing me off all season long.

I initially thought Level 3 being named 'Bullet' was a clever Japanese-themed pun, but then Bailey added in an enlightening Negro League history lesson on top! Making sure the notable stories of the Major Leagues include those of the Negro Leagues is an important endeavour and that was really well done.
Have been wanting to do some Negro Leagues content on here. No dedicated video yet, but at least we got to talk about Bullet Rogan before the year was up.
To realize that Home Plate umpires were purposely being tough on him just proves how elite he really was in 2021.

@@henryyoung6126 you can't really say it was racism unless you look at other Asian pitchers and hitters, and find similar numbers. It could just be his prowess. People tend to expect more from people with more skill. If you're considered smart, and come back with a B, you may be chastised. But if you're considered average or dumb, that b could be praised because it's above what is expected.
Crazy that this is his 21 season. 22 was better, and 23 is looking even better yet so far.
After losing the mvp to judge, he said, "Fine, I'll just hit 60 and win the cy young. Try to keep it from me then!"
I was at Comerica Park when Shohei Ohtani hit his 40th home run of the season. As a Tigers fan, I was hoping to see Miggy hit his 500th homer, but seeing Ohtani hit number 40 was the next best thing. Plus I got to see Ohtani pitch live.
What was it like seeing that HR in person? The roar of the crowd was incredible. Never heard energy like that for an opposing player.
Although I was unhappy to see the Tigers lose, I knew that what I saw was historic. Watching him keep the Tigers to 1 run and then seeing him hit number forty left me in awe. I was also in right field at this game, so I had a great view of his homer and where it landed. I and everyone I came with applauded the homer not because we were happy to see the Tigers lose, but because we were all very thankful to watch such a close, and well fought game by the Tigers, Angels, and especially Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani’s absolutely ridiculous. He’s one of the game’s best power hitters, one of its best pitchers, and one of its fastest runners, and it makes him possibly the most fun baseball player to watch in a long, long time.
He may be all that you say he is, But his team doesn't win. And unfortunately for you baseball is all about Winning.

@@reinhardtwilhelm5415 I've watched Baseball for 60 years. Seen all the greats, and I've learned that it's not just about being a great player. You have to be a little Lucky too. Remember it's a team game. You should cheer for the name on the front of the uniform not the back.

Maybe it's a more modern approach to it or maybe it's because I'm not from the US and don't have a personal connection to any place there but I always thought it makes more sense to cheer for players (or both players and teams). Especially with how sports work and how often we have trades and see players switching teams. In my opinion, if you don't like the team for its players, what do you like it for? Its logo? Its name? I can understand following/supporting a team due to regional connections (coming from the same place etc.) or because you like their organization's approach to the game. But I still think that players deserve just as much support, if not more, than the teams because they are actually on the field for the teams and they give the team their personality.

i will always remember a may game where lance mccullers pitched against shohei and when ohtani was done pitching he just casually strolled out to right field. i was dumbfounded he really made mlb look like little league. i am so appreciative of this years season it was my favorite in a decade at least
I think that's one of few, if not, the only game he played a fielder. I think he mainly DH'ed.

Watching Shohei reminded me of a quotes from one of your other videos ."its like I've seen a UFO in person and I'm desperately presenting someone the grainy footage in the hopes that they will validate my sighting". Ohtani is a unicorn, something that simply should not be possible in modern baseball and yet....
If baseball still exists 100 years from now, Ohtani's 2021 should still be heralded.

Remember, Ohtani's MLB career is just getting started. We might be in for a huge couple years for him. I am praying for him to be healthy throughout.
Just to confirm a musing towards the end of this video: I paid way more attention to the 2021 season of baseball than I ever have before, and it is entirely because of Ohtani. By that I mean I paid any amount of attention. I'm not exactly a baseball fan, but his highlight reel was just infectious, you couldn't look away from it. I ended up actually watching a couple games, not even Angels ones either.
man....same. i haven't liked baseball since i was probably 12. then i heard about Ohtani. tuned into some games. now here we are, im 3 seasons deep into a RTTS myplayer, watched every pitch of the world series, and follow the baseball subreddit religiously
I'm a neutral from the UK who watched dozens of games of Angels highlights because Ohtani would be in them (and every Foolish Baseball video)
I'm in a very not sports oriented discord and at least three of us went to games this year specifically to see shohei. I saw him in Baltimore and by the time I went to the bathroom and got a bottle of water, people had almost completely surrounded the bullpen waiting for him to come warm up. it was something I'd never seen before in baseball. Shohei is the biggest star in the game right now without a doubt and it's an experience to see him live.
I remember hearing something interesting about Aaron Judge, in that he at one point tried wearing his pulled over his knees rather than having them sit under his knees to see if it affected his strike zone.
A week before Christmas and we get something just as good, a new Baseball Bits

Coincidentally, the frame at 13:27 contains not only Ohtani, but another player who I think deserves a Baseball Bits someday, Eduardo Rodriguez. He was possibly one of the most unlucky players in the game last year, to the point where it was comical. It seems like the sort of curious thing that Foolish would explore.
I agree, he got so much shit from Sox fans and Boston media and I was going crazy constantly defending him, it seemed impossible how unlucky he seemed to be.

Not only was he coming off of Myocarditis, one of the rarest known yet most severe reactions na to COVID, he also had pure bad luck incidents like having a severe migraine in the middle of the game that forced him out. It's honestly almost impossible in my eyes.
The fact that he got 5yrs/$77m after a 4.74 ERA tells you a lot.

With the vast amount of coverage Ohtani has gotten this year, it's incredibly hard to find new and useful ways to examine his season. But you did so and then some. Really amazing work Bailey.

Great video. From what I've seen Ohtani has focused completely on training and has stayed out of the media since he went back to Japan. Can you imagine him getting even better in 2022?! I'm not sure if I should be scared or excited! Can't wait to see what he has in store pitching wise next season. He was undefeated at home and his home ERA was below 2 in 2021! And after every bad outing he had he pitched Cy Young for a while this year. Insane. He's sooooo much fun to watch.
If Ohtani has 10 seasons at 75% of this year he’s a 1st ballot HOF
He may honestly have HOF pioneer status already.

Awesome video! Even as a diehard Astros fan Sho is my favorite player. I watch almost all of his games. Such an electric, exciting, and charismatic player.

@@FoolishBaseball haha. Went to a Sho start in Houston. Was hoping for him to go 8 IP shutty, go 3 for 3 with a homer, and get pulled unjustly and the Astros to have a 9th inning win. Unfortunately he didn’t pitch that great that day, but we did see him hit a homer!

Was at the game where he hit #40 in Detroit. Was hoping to see Miggys 500th HR (almost did) but watching Ohtani hit that shot to right, seeing disappear into the night was a moment I'll never forget.
Plus the best part, seeing the kids a few rows behind me flip out and scream "DAD HE HIT A BOMB!" Baseball's in good hands.
The enthusiasm of the narration in this video is literally absolutely the perfect amount of hype for this season. Love the vid, Bailey. Everyone should be this excited about Ohtani.

I'm so glad you added in the parts about Ohtani not getting calls from the umps. I watched the Angels all year and it was so frustrating with him getting fucked over and over even when the ump would be consistent through the game, and then change when Ohtani was up.
Also Trout wasn't even batting behind him, next year pitchers are gonna have to really pitch to him.
This is one fact that this video didn't touch on. Trout and Rendon were out pretty much the whole season. His stats might get even better with support.
there were some bad calls against him in NYC and he was pitching that should have been called strikes. tbh against Houston in their home field was the only bad game but you can charge that to a long strenuous season😀

I don't care at all about how 'sticky' high leverage stats might be - I cannot comprehend that Ohtani was the best (and not particularly close) as a hitter AND pitcher in clutch situations. Unreal!
We'll know those stats are actually super sticky when Luis Torrens and Tarik Skubal have the best clutch stats again next year.

Baseball bits is such a national treasure. I try to explain Ohtani to non baseball people and they just don't get why it's special but we know...we know
So many kids growing up watching Ohtani doing the impossible will strive to emulate it and raise the bar, the idea of more two way players coming out of all pockets of baseball is so exciting.

It's obvious to anyone that watches Angels games that Ohtani shines when the pressure is on. Makes it hurt even more how far the Angels are from a playoff appearance where it would matter most.
I think it's probably one of the reasons why his stats for the 2nd half were not as good as the 1st half. He himself said it was hard to stay motivated in September. Of course there's many other reasons maybe but the team's success definitely plays a big part in a players success too. But would i want to see him in a different jersey? Not exactly. I want to see him and trout getting the ring together someday!

the 2021 ohtani season was one of the most remarkable sporting achievements and spectacles i’ve ever seen in my life
i fully watched this 15 minute video in 2 minutes, and i agree the video is very well made and tells us a lot about society
I'm going to become The Ohtani.
Shohei’s one of my favorite players in baseball and it’s somehow a herculean effort for the Angels to get him anywhere near the playoffs. Same goes for Trout.
Imagine professional basketball or football had a foolish? These videos are the highest quality sports videos can reach
I’m definitely not an Angels fan but damned if I don’t find myself cheering for Shohei. I think he will do a whole lot of good for baseball worldwide as well as domestically over the long run.

Fun fact, if you take away Ohtani's blow-up start against the Yankees, his ERA drops from a 3.18 to a 2.71, which is a lower ERA than Robbie Ray (although less IP)
I guess the good thing is at least he can improve from there. He already set the bar so high this season.
a big part of that blow up start was the umpire and bullpen's fault.
