  • I give you my thoughts and impressions on the Camouflague or camo Lenscoat lens cover for the Canon RF 100-500mm L lens which I'm now using for wildlife photography.

As mentioned in this video, the excellent ‪@whistlingwingsphotography‬ channel also provides an alternative method of lens camo through the use of vinyl. For more information on that method you can visit that channel using the link(s) below.

Got something similar. The best thing about these sleeves they keep the lens looking brand new.

Thanks, Gary. Yeah it was the sleeve that sold it to me!

Very nice review, Thak You. But, escused me just one thing : you don't show how is hard to put on the lenscoat on the lens. Thanks

Thanks for your comment. It requires a little stretching, but it's relatively easy to affix. However, the instructions that show which pieces need to go where could, in my opinion, be a little clearer.

Nice that the Zoom Part is Covered, too. Mostly its staying white with other Covers

That was a selling point for me too. Some do come with a removable middle cover but it's easy to lose and means you can't operate the zoom function. In my opinion this one is much better.

@@wildphil they even will make one for the new RF200-800mm. Not available yet, but i registered my email. I preordered this lens and sold my Sigma almost instantly because it has grown something behind the front lens for the second time. So i got it cleaned and sold it

    Cheers for the review Phil!
I’m going to try camo tape, fabric material used to wrap rifles and popular with air softers etc. 10 metre roll for a tenner and you can customise yourself, worth a punt! Won’t provide much protection but I simply want to reduce brightness and shine off that white body.

You know that's given me an idea for the tripod foot - I could just keep the neoprene on the lens barrel but wrap the tripod foot and collar in vynal - I think I'll have a go at doing that when I get a spare moment.

@@wildphil I looked at the vinyl tape but I think there’s still a little shine to it, the fabric tape is more disruptive but will probably absorb water. So it’s a trade off!

Those extra pieces may be useful for the 1.4x extender

I'm not 100% sure they'd fit, mate. I know that Lenscoat do sell am extender set for both the 1.4x and 2x as one set for around £35 or dollars I think.

I went with outdoorphotographygear and their mesh cover for the zoom part of the lens. Again more to keep the lens from cosmetic damage. I do wonder on the vinyl wrap method how that affects the zoom seals long term? My lens doesn't fully close and can only close to about 120mm with the zoom cover but I also only really use the lens extended. I have the stiching lined up on the lens hood with the push button to tell me where it is but leave the lens hood fittted as it fits in my bag ok at 100mm. Thanks for the video.

Thanks, Neil. I haven't heard of outdoorphotographygear before so I'll look them up and and keep them in mind for the next purchase! :-)

Phill thans for your very clear review! I have a question about the easiness of control of the buttons. For instance is it still possoble to switch the autofocus/manual button with the cover on?

    • @wildphil
      @wildphil  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is, quite easy.

Hi Anders. I have two atually. The one on my R6 is from EasyCover: Amazon affiliate shortlink here: amzn.to/3I4WSOF - but I also have another one which looks identical on my R7, that one is a cheaper chinese one and I can't see any noticeable difference in quality, it is almost half the price of the EasyCover: amzn.to/3SX6fX6

I’m thinking of covering my RF 100-500 like this but read that the reason Canon lenses are white is to reduce heat expansion that can damage the lens. Apparently it has something to do with fluorite they use that is sensitive to heat. (Nikon doesn’t use the same thing so their lenses can be black I guess) What are your thoughts on that?

Thank you for the comment and I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply. You're absolutely right about the white lens coating, I have since discovered that. I can only speak for the UK climate which doesn't regularly get that hot - I have never had issues with covering any lens and I'm not aware of anyone else that has. Certainly for the UK climate i think the additional scratch and impact protection are well worth it. I frequently rest my gear on the ground and rocks and walls and can do so with confidence when I have a lens cover.
