I've been in the Tolbooth Tavern a couple of times and I remember speaking to the person behind the bar and they told me that one of their colleagues went down to the cellar to change a barrel and they said that when they got down their they saw two figures sitting at a table having a conversation. His colleague asked why they were down their they suddenly disappeared. So they say the Tolbooth Tavern is haunted.

Thank you for this video! Such memories. When we had out 10-day stay, a year ago, we stayed in the area immediately behind the Tavern on the Old Tolbooth Wynd. We enjoyed many a pint in the Tavern. Such great memories. Thanks again, Tony. Thanks for the suggestion Kirsten. I look forward to seeing the rest of this series.

If you love old doors visit Holyrood Salvage where they stock 600 old Edinburgh doors from all sorts of historic buildings. The salvage yard is set in one of the last historic Edinburgh brewery buildings. You can wander the tun rooms and the yard which still has 150 years of history

We salvage loads of historical items from Edinburgh!
We have parquet flooring from the observatory on Calton hill, a 15 foot metal angel sculpture from a pub at the shore, church doors, embassy doors, pub doors, chandeliers from Heriot row, signs from pubs, 19th century mirrors from George street, columns from a Masonic lodge, church statue, celebrants chairs etc etc. Closed for now but check out our holyrood salvage website. We are in the Tun rooms of the iconic brewery which is fortunately listed but will be turned into flats soon ☹️

You will just have to come out for a hockey game when they start playing. When the team chose that name, many thought it was a joke. They figured they would choose something a little more Seattle-ized. But I think it was an awesome fan. Their arena is still being finished. They should start playing in the fall.

Great idea Tony (Kirsten)! I really enjoyed hearing more about that pub. I just finished watching your series about the closes, where you covered this location also. In that video you also mentioned the stone block behind the archway (at 12:21 in this video) - is it possible that this was a well also, I can cover you get another video? It’s not terribly decorative but from the backside it somewhat resembled one of the wellheads that had been blocked elsewhere on the Royal Mile. Love to hear what you think, and thanks again! Well done!

No idea where that is though. Its where they hold all of his materials, models etc from his movies (Jason & the Argonauts was the big one, also Clash of the Titans). I'd really love to attend the current exhibition at the Modern Two gallery but won't make it due to covid and funds for the trip. Arg. My favorite story of the Tollbooth is a more recent event. When the police had to be called to help the UKIP Leader, Nigel Farage, escape a mob that had forced him to barricade himself inside the premises in 2013. I'd be interested in hearing about The Beehive Tavern & The Last Drop in the Grassmarket, as well as Ensign Ewart & The Witchery on the Royal Mile.
