DJI Mavic Air Range Problem - Video Transmission Issue

  • DJI Mavic Air Range Problem. I get a video transmission issue at around 200m away from the craft.
    Updated firmware for craft and RC, Empty field, Clear LOS between me and craft. Tried on 2.4G and 5.8 Bandwidth.

    This is why I am returning the Mavic Air. All is good except that it keeps losing signal. Unacceptable. Occusync is a must.

    So I just noticed that your antennas are pointed straight out. You HAVE TO aim the flat surface of the antennas towards the drone. They should be in the up position and parallel with one another.

    Its something that they can hopefully fix with next firmware update. I had the same problem with getting greater distances with my mavic air, when i came across some video on tube. The solution is to manually choose channel to operate the craft. Try choosing channel with lowest interference and see the difference. I did 3,2 km on 50 m altitude with no signal loss ( was smooth as butter )

      Toby Concepcion hows the video transmission of mavic pro? I was considering those 2 drones, ended up to air due to the 100mbs video, rear sensor and newwer tech. But the constantly poor signal lost is a bummer

      He did choose a manual channel towards the end - channel 3 on 2.4ghz - no better at all

    Yep, right out of the box my transmission is broken and slow. My first flight in my neighborhood was a real disappointment. DJI had me update the firmware with DJI Assistant 2, no luck, delete and install app, no luck. Waiting for word from DJI but your guess is as good as mine on when then will respond.

      Will do. I bought mine direct from DJI so they have to deal with me. I just sent them a bunch of info to start the replacement process, not sure how long this will all take but I know for sure i won't have next week when I need it for a job.

    Had the exact same issues you did so I sent mine back to DJI. Apparently this is a common problem especially with the ones they released in February. DJI ended up replacing the motherboard and two motors, now it seems to work ok. If you are able, I would send it back for warranty repair, but not sure how that would be done in Manila.

      Toby Concepcion about 200 meters as well before I started having the signal interference problem and video cuts. Sometimes it was worse, like when I went to coron. I took off and about 50m vertical and it already started giving me the interference warning and then completely cut the video a min later

      Almost 3 months ago, the seller sent my Mavic Air to their supplier in Manila. Then they told me they sent it to DJI Hongkong for repair (they wouldn't replace defective product). It just got back here. This monday i range tested it with the seller's technician. Nothing changed. Only more than 100 meters. Very disappointing. Now they're telling me they will replace the unit if they get their supplier's approval. Not good business doing.

      @@konep I don't think people understand when you buy a mavic air it uses Wi-Fi that's the problem no matter what you do you'll still have the same issues I know I own a lot of DJI drones but the high-end ones the mavic pro and up they use ocusync no issues no lagging no lost signal the mavic air could have been a great drone if DJI would have used ocusync instead of Wi-Fi I took a chance and didn't listen to the reviews regarding the signal issues and bought one had it for 2 days nothing but issues lagging issues and lost signal issues I sent it back yesterday I bought it just the mess around with but I never knew the range was that bad my mavic 2 Zoom it's a great drone no issues not saying I will never have an issue but when you buy a new drone as I did the mavic air and I didn't listen to the reviews I figured it couldn't be that bad how wrong I was

    I have a P4P and a Mavic Air. I only use the P4P when the enhanced camera specs are necessary. My Mavic Air did not exhibit the communication problem in your video. The only issue I felt I would have with the Mavic Air was flight time. As most video is shot in short clips, this issue became a non-issue. Replacing batteries between shooting individual clips was no problem. What I like best about the Mavic Air is that it is never even noticed by others. I research ALL flight restrictions and abide by them (including VLOS), but sometimes spectators with drone phobia will make negative comments when I fly my P4P. They never even notice the Mavic Air. With the higher speed processor, it computes x, y, and z positions more frequently than previous drones. In Cinematic Mode is also computers acceleration in each direction to smooth out movement ... hopefully the new Mavic Pro and P4P’s will have that feature. Generally, this little drone is a gem !!!

      Mavic air is the worst drone I ever owned way too many lagging issues among losing signal at close range would not recommend this drone to anyone it does have a great camera and so easy to carry the problem is Wi-Fi if DJI would have used ocusync I would have definitely kept mine for a second drone my first one is the mavic 2 Zoom talk about brilliant technology that's what's in the mavic 2 and of course ocusync2 extremely a very strong signal it puts out so if you're flying in residential areas as I do no issues

    Radio signals can be reflected by different objects. This reflected radiation is confusing for Rx units and will cause loss of connection.

      I tried flying over the water with little or no objects nearby and got the same problem after 200m.

    Same issue as mine. Have connectivity issue beyond 200m. There's so much video lag after 200m that it cause you to render some delayed reaction thus causing some bumps to your piloting. I changed the cable, but the lag still remains. I'm in 5.8 bandwith at that time. I think this M.A. is only designed for selfies.

    I had the same issue with my Mavic Air. I Sent my drone into DJI and DJI Engineers have found out that the gimbal module is defective. This module has a video down-link that transmits a signal to the remote controller. Dji replaced the Camera module and now all is well. Contact DJI if you have tried everything else and it didnt work. cheers

    Mine won't fly more than around 200m from my house without losing connection. I've tried everything to fix it but still poor so it's going back and I'll get a Pro. It's a real shame as it's a great drone otherwise. There is clearly a hardware issue with some of these.

      Mine is the same. Just got it last week. Looses connection anywhere from 300-700 ft. Extremely disappointed! DJI offers no help either. My Spark flys farther than this $1000.00 Mavic Air. If you haven’t bought one yet, save your money. 😡

    Same problem here, I have lag with a diference of about 3 seconds, even if I have the drone for about a meter from the controller, this starts happening today and I was flying at 50 meters...

    Omg. Same problem here. At 1st i notice losing video connection around 200m then 300m loosing conncetion. By with my p3pro. 500m no loose connetions or bimp videos. DJI pls fix this problem to us. I love the feature of this drone. But range is our problem

      You have to point the entenas straight up, put it in 5.8 gigahertz if flying in a high interference area, and check if you are in FCC mode

    Even though I think the mavic air has a bit better camera than the pro (and other features) this is the exact reason why I bought the pro over the air. I can get the same great footage as the air using good ND filters. I got the pro for $765 at best buy 3 weeks ago, which was still cheaper than the air but that wasn't the main reason for my choice. I had the spark as my first drone and got so sick and tired of the lag and total disconnect from 400m away that I never flew it. I had to go with OcuSync this time and it's a night and day difference. I really was wishing the air came with OcuSync even if my distant limit was a mile as I don't go much further than 1000m-1200m anyway. I really wanted to put my money toward the air for a number of reasons but I'm glad I didn't as I pay less attention to how far I'm flying and more on filming as I know I'll have that stable connection. Also, I'm always getting 1080p feed back from the Drone to my phone/iPad so I can actually see what I'm looking at and get a better feel for how I want my footage to look in post. I know the air can get a good mile+ or so and in some cases surpass the range limit but knowing my luck I would of ended up in your position. Also the flight time on the pro is remarkable.. I know you can get more batteries but that extra 5 minutes staying up in the air makes a big difference in certain instances. As long as I'm close by I get 22 minutes of recording and have about 10% percent battery left when I land. I hope you get this thing figured out, whether that's through fw or dji fixing a hardware issue on yours because these mavic air's are slick and aren't cheap.. Best of luck!

    Aside from signal interference, I believe this is also an interference issue caused by the poor quality of the DJI slim RC wires connection from phone to the RC. I bought a 6 inch lightning cable and connected it to the usb on the RC and it worked like a charm. Try it with your lightning cable to test it out. Let me know if it works

      Toby Concepcion el dice que el cable original es el que causa el problema, yo tenia el mismo y compre un OTG y ahora llego a 4 klmts, hice pruebas y definitivamente es el cable del mavic el problema, te recomiendo comprar uno de muy buena calidad

      Yeah. The first time I flew the Air I was at a beach with no radio towers or metal nearby and i still got signal problems. I knew right there that something was up.

    First off 5.8g is for areas that that have a lot of clutter around like buildings n houses...it’s shorter range...I never use 5.8 unless I’m exploring buildings..I always use 2.4g...n I get at least 2,500 meters...which is 1 1/2 miles...before I get break up...so idk...what the issue is...u should be getting...at least mile and a half...

    Final Update: After weeks and weeks of troubleshooting, I ended up getting just a refund for my drone from my local dealer even though they had no return policy. At first they kept insisting that I send the drone to DJI, so i had to complain to the local Department of Trade and Industry. Eventually the dealer gave in and allowed me to get a refund. This was because my issue was between me and the local dealer, not me, DJI and the dealer. The dealer was obligated to give me a proper product from the start. If you recently purchased a defective product you have the right to return, repair or, in my case, refund. Make sure to check your local regulations regarding this. It doesn't matter if you bought it from a brick and mortar store or from some random guy on ebay. There are laws in place that protect us consumers from defective products. Just like we're supposed to read up on drone regulations, make sure you know your consumer rights as well! If you guys want to know more on how I managed to get a refund despite the local dealer not having a return policy, I could make a video on it if you're interested.

      I'm interested! Please! That's exactly my trouble now. My Mavic Air in the farm only flew over 500 meters. In the city only over 100 meters. Two months ago i asked the seller for a replacement. They only sent the product to their supplier in Manila and told me the product was sent to DJI in China or Hongkong. Got the product back on monday, range tested it with the seller's technician, still we only reached over 100 meters. Seller still won't replace the product without their supplier's approval. Your help will be greatly appreciated, Mr. Toby.

      That's why I buy from Amazon the return policy is great I had mine for 2 days nothing but issues I'm glad you got a refund as I did but without the work that you had to do to get it

    this happen to me today and the drone was right infront of me and then it disconnected.. i was next to a busy road with cars would that be the issue ? but yes my video was very choppy but the drone was 1m away from me....

      My drone is fine at close range (under 100 meters). You can try connecting with DJI assistant 2 and downgrading/upgrading their FW solved the problem. Also try a factory reset via DJI assistant if that doesnt work. This did not work for me though.

    Im experiencing the same issue. Have been in contact with DJI Support. After making sure the firmware is up to date they want me to send the drone and controller in for a repair. It’s about two months old and have had this issue all the time. I’m waiting for a package return label at the moment.

    May I ask you whether you found a solution to overcome this problem? After heavy research I came to the conclusion that the main board where the Wifi component sits has to be replaced. Ist that something you can confirm?

    Mavic Pros have major gimbal issues and Airs have major signal issues. When will these Chinese people realize that quality is a serious consideration here in the US?

    if you see the wi-fi strength indicator on the upper right-hand side corner indicating only one bar. This is also happen to my MA. It's like constantly showing one or two bar only.. even if I fly in open space without near any interferance from cellular tower or power lines and with correct antenna positioning to the aircraft direction. What happen with this MA? the w-fi, is that really dissapointing?? *sight

    I got same issue before I stumbled upon a forum that discusses the effect of carbon-fiber propellers on signal strength. I then used the original propeller that came with the drone and now works fine. Are you using a carbon-fiber propeller in this flight?

    I purchased mine directly from DJI it is past the 14 day return window but I have never crashed and only flown about 8 times. I have this exact same problem is there anyway to get a replacement or refund?

    I have the same exact issue. I was in Bagan, a remote area, there’s no way it would get any kind of interference but I couldn’t go farther than 200m. Updating FW didn’t help at all. Please let me know if there’s a fix for this. My first ever drone and I’m very disappointed. Angry at DJi right now.

      Switch from CE to FCC mode. And the range will change from 200m to 4000+ or even 5000m+ (in open area).

    Something else is wrong I went out with trees and other objects in my way to 1108 meters but another time I was only 350meters but my UAV was higher and deep in trees

    same thing happening to me. i'll keep looking for a solution, lmk if you find one. im more SOL than you however, since i bought mine off ebay. it's brand new though so it should be covered under warranty, i also bought the care refresh package. still, i have a feeling it will be a headache to deal through the warranty so i'll try everything else first.

    Update: I updated my DJI go 4 app to 4.2.6. Minor improvement for the video transmission signal at close range BUT signal STILL gets choppy after 200-300m.

      It will have a lot of difference because 5.8G is very weak at CE with a range of 500.But the 2.4G is musc more reliable in CE with a range of 2km

    This is nothing. DJI drones and their apps have several issues. The App which they give you is guaranteed to not run completely on all phones. Meaning if there were 50 features that you can use on the DJI app, only a select approximately 35 features would work on that phone. Then you try a different phone and totally different random set of 35 features will work. Of-course the actual numbers etc are just an analogy for you to understand. Then you will frantically buy a DJI approved phone (they have a list on their spec page for each drone) and guess what, still about 10 features dont work on that phone. This happened to me.
    That too the main offline maps wont load and even DJI doesn't know why. Suckers convinced me to buy a new phone claiming that all features would only work on their approved phones. Now its a waste. I have to fly in the blind, not knowing where its flying and having no visual map of the drone location. Apart from this video feed is extremely choppy and pixelated with huge graphic map like patch artifacts wiping across the screen every 20 seconds and with the drone just 200m away. All this with their approved brand new phone, exclusively bought for flying my Mavic AIR. Now when i ask them whats going on ? no response, ignored.

    Hey everyone I was having the same problem. I FIXXED IT!!! I reformatted my SD card and it works now....Hope this works for everyone else. Good Luck

    at 2:22 - 2:44 you see the cell tower, this tower is not limited to data/voice panels, there are other transmitters on it, hence all the interference. - you were asked about it below, you omitted that information, in your shot you kept trying to avoid having it in frame... that's what we call trolling a product.

      I have tried flying in different and some remote areas with little to no cell towers. I kept getting the same results. Call it what you will.

      Toby Concepcion , I have had some difficulties with mine however, doing a firmware reset and using a spare s7 and having all networks including WiFi turned off (important), I have maxed out the distance.

      Unfortunately I didn’t have a compatible android phone. I couldn’t switch to FCC mode because there are no IP spoofers for iPhone. I switched off WiFi and Bluetooth on following test flights which is what DJI suggested me to do. I only had minimal improvement. I ended up returning the Mavic Air. I did buy a Mavic pro and now I’m happy with it. It does what I expected the air to do.

    Youre in ce mode hope you try fcc mode..1-11 channel means fcc mode and 1-13 channels means ce mode

    In Europe at least 5ghz only gets you about 500m according to the spec

      Yup I saw that, on 2.4Ghz myself I get around 1-1.5km before signal completely breaks up, so 2.4 is subject to much more interference. Try perhaps another area or if you can get your hands on an android device, perhaps the fakegps forcefcc trick?

      Toby Concepcion on your dji assistant from desktop/mac on software/fw update there is the current and the old one just flash the old firmware.

    Have you resolved the range problem? I need some help too. My Mavic Air only flew more than 500 meters in the farm. In the city only over 100 meters. DJI's claim with Mavic Air is 4 kilometers. Is this a defective product? Is the seller supposed to replace this?

    Ganyan din ang nangyayari sa akin, pero nalaman ko na nasa NO FLY ZONE ako. Nasa no fly zone ka kasi kuya kaya palaging may interference. May app po na pwedeng madownload para alam kung saan pwedeng magpalipad.

    Update: After troubleshooting with DJI for almost a month, DJI wants me to send the drone to them in China so they could have a look at it. I paid for a product expecting it to work properly out of the box. Instead, I received a very expensive paper-weight. So they want me to send a factory defective product, which I bought from them, to China. To make matters worse they want me to pay for shipping to China. It’s been almost a month and I have yet to properly use the product I bought. Make sure you have airtight warranty with your DJI dealer if you're considering this drone.

      fyi : one more thing..try to link rc to ac again..not in main screen of djigo...once connected go inside the app in controller settings at the bottom there is remote linking..click it...it will say confirm frequency..press ok..... then.....press and hold Ac function button...lets see...hope it helps..

      I have manage to receive my MA from dji tested out it was ok no more lag or aircraft disconnect, the only issue is they have replaced a refurbish one :( i bought the drone before just for two weeks, it is a brand new. I think its not fair what you have paid for a new one then replacement was a refurbish one.. :(

    I have same experience with image transmission lag. I thought it was because i flew in city that maybe alot of other signal interference (i.e : cellular tower,radio tower etc) ?

      I have tried FCC mode this morning, and the result is amazing, you can feel the difference. I live at urban area, surrounding with tall building, and near our home there is a cellular transmitter tower (50mtr high).
      Using CE Mode, the warning of High inference has pop up since take off . surprisingly, in FCC mode, the warning didn't pop-up and i can flew 268m from homepoint before it lost signal and intiate RTH

    I have one to, it has the worst range out off all dji drones, 20 meters straight up in bangkok and i loose signal.
    Its a piece off shit drone and wish i never bought it, the spark has much better range.

      I contacted DJI, they asked me to try a few things. Nothing resolved the issue. Waiting on DJI to let me know the next steps but I believe they are on Chinese New Year Holiday so I might not hear from them until Feb 22. I also tried returning my Unit to the store I bought it from. They told me to wait for what DJI to say I have a defective unit before they can take it back.

      I'm having a similar problem with my Mavic Air at the moment... video gets choppy at about 150m. .. even my Spark has more consistent image...

    Just switch from 5.8 to 2.4 ghz transmition and you can have more range :) It’s simple.

      Just bought the Air, coming from a crashed Pro. Terribly dissapointing, too much lag at 300ft for an $800 drone ($920 for the Fly More + tax).

    I had the same problem. I was so sad because 50-60 meter high in air signal problem. 600-700 meter signal problem. I Write shop them give me nothing. BUT. I find out of It. First I take from 5.8Ghz to 2.4Ghz. I got now over 1 kilometer range. It help me. I live In Europa we have CE settings max 2 kilometer range. But some easy steps and my Mavic Air Is now In FC mode 4 kilometer range. 2.4Ghz and FC Mode. My Mavic Air is a Complete New drone. Some days ago I fly 2 kilometer and 12 meter before I turn around and fly home. I had signal so I could fly mutch longer. Home 4 kilometer and 42 meter. I have video on my chanal. This easy steps help me mutch. I also have Dji Inspire 1 V2.0. but I fly longer With my Mavic Air. Fantastic littel drone.
