I found there is just enough room to put a battery tender cable in and have the pigtail come out between the battery cover and the ignition cover. Then anytime I don't ride for a day or two I plug it in. In the US at least a cheap tender can be had for around $20 USD so it's worth it to me.
hope you tried to crash start in second or higher gear and then as soon as it turns over pull the clutch in. Also a jump start would have work if you took the rightside cover off you'll see the starter solenoid. the cable to the rightside would be for the positive terminal and just put the negative terminal of the jumper cable to a chassy earth. It's a little tricky but works.

Yeah, this one had a no name eBay battery in it. I bought a Yuasa, so it should last now.

No, couldn't get it to push start. I didn't think about hot wiring the solenoid at the time, I have done it before and as you say, it will work.
