    Some people don't like the bread/grease/whatever idea on the LS because there's a chance it can knock out the crank freeze plug. It worked fine for me, YMMV 🍻

    Hey JR..if it's not in the car yet...and from a career mechanic...while the drivetrain is out, just throw a new oil pressure sender on it as it sits at the back on the engine and these ones are known to fail. Just a small piece of advice!

      Just did this on my 2010 Yukon XL. That job ain't no joke. Would be 1,000,000 percent easier while the engine is out of the car.

    To get a more accurate torque measurement don't use an extension or use the shortest one possible. Less flex. Also don't use a swivel socket. Same thing, flex.

    I'd have used full synthetic bread from Motul.
    I've done the step stool trick before, but now that I'm older and more fragile, I use a proper step ladder. Get the two step little giant one (seems like a product placement opportunity). The wide steps are super nice.

    I used the bread trick with ease on my k20, it's only a bushing so it took less than a whole slice to do it. It seems pretty ideal for bushings as the pullers don't have much to grab onto but I agree with others here that the puller may be best for bearings, especially when there is a freeze plug you can wreck. In a pinch and on the cheap bread is fine just know that if you wreck your freeze plug it'll be more time and money, maybe to the point buying the puller would have been cheaper. Weigh your options know the risks and make your own judgement call.

    I use the Wonderbread trick on blind bearings that hang out in moped crank cases. I have found that kneading the bread into little balls of dough (about the size of the bearing hole) works the best, that way it is already compacted and free of air. BUT it never has failed me yet. I was excited to see it applied to a big ol pilot bearing! Keep up the great work man. I love getting home from work and catching the new videos!

  • @eb_z0694
    @eb_z0694 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Dude you are so lucky. When I did this it jammed the press-in plug that seals the gun drilled hole at the back of the crank right thru the crank into the oil sump. And my engine was in the car. We used wheat bread though LOL. I HIGHLY discourage everyone from trying this on an LS engine because of that plug that hardly ANYONE even knows exists.

    • @williamjsmith9877
      @williamjsmith9877 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish he would put a little detail into his videos, I would like to see where this plug is located, and more interested (as a lot of viewers are ) on the damage to the old motor than just an installation of the "new" motor, otherwise a great channel.

  • @SteveBassen
    @SteveBassen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can use bar soap as well, just cut small chunks off and pack it in... More efficient than bread and no grease mess. Best thing for a driver is taking a quarter drive socket that matches the inner diameter of the pilot bearing and reverse it on an extension so the flat side of the socket is being driven in.

    Oh man the heel crust of a bread loaf are the best parts! We kids used to fight over who got those slices! I don't understand anyone who doesn't eat the end slices - you paid for it, you should eat it! That's where the most flavor is, like sourdough! I know I'm right. It's like not finishing a steak! Or not drinking the last inch of a bottle of Canadian whisky. Geez!

    as far as I am concerned, "flywheel" and "flexplate" are as good as "the big round thingie". I had my doubts on the bread solution, but, it sure worked just fine for you. You do realize there is a plug in the end of the crankshaft that you probably dislodged using the hydraulic bread trick. You may have a massive oil leak once you fire this thing up. You need to use a pilot bearing removing tool on LS engines. This is not a small block chevy.
