This song gets me every time. But Rob singing alone and Adam coming in with the snare drums. That's just not fair.
Home Free got permission from the songwriter/estate to update it to reflect the modern military experience. Many female veterans have expressed their thanks to the band for representing them and their lives. The final verse is an absolute gut punch, just because there is so much that is hopeful up until that point. The flashbacks are so poignant.

Beyond the obvious incredible talent in Home Free, they have the most incredible way to interpret and tell a story in how they perform and in their videos. Home Free is not a group you 'listen' to, they are the group you 'feel'.
I’ve never seen anyone mention this but after the soldier passes the lyrics are “never gonna hold the hand of another guy” instead of “never wanna hold the hand of another guy” I think that even makes it sadder!

I tried to explain the relevance of this song and I broke down into tears. Growing up on a military base, at four years old I was at my babysitter's who was heavily pregnant with her first child when she got word he wasn't coming back. She was on base alone for the six months her husband was technically stations there but was overseas for what was to be an 8 month placement. He was only on base for a day or two to help get her set up. The day his letters came in she would glow. They were everything for her. She taught me how to make bread.
When I had children of my own I started making bread for them. I couldn't tell them about this song without breaking down. I took a three hour break before coming back to write this and I am in tears again. She was only 20.
Bruce Robison American country singer wrote and recorded this song in 1996 and rewrote it in 1999. It became popular when The Dixie Chicks did a cover in 2002.

The song was originally written by Bruce Robison about a Vietnam veteran. The most famous version is by The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks) which is gender swapped with a "girl with a bow in her hair" and it's the Vietnam War that is discussed. This version is freaking incredible though and I adore it! Wow! What an incredible song...I'm absolutely stunned here...

When the government sends a letter saying a soldiers coming home, its in a way a death notice and the body is coming home for burial.
You want heartbreak? I imagine she put that letter saying she’s coming home soon in the mail, but then was killed in action before it was delivered. Assuming she had listed him as an emergency contact since she had no one else, they would have informed him of her death right away. Now imagine how it would feel to get that letter. It’s one thing to get the letter and have hope, only to be informed of what happened. But I think it would hurt even more to get her letter afterwards, and know that she had that hope only to have it dashed.

It's an absolutely beautiful song. Always makes me tear up. But adding onto what you said, the song also reminds me of just how many of those Traveling Soldiers who never come back are on the other side. So many brave warriors in the Middle East defending their families from corrupt oil-hungry politicians, billionaires, and religious zealots (on both sides).

Bruce Robinson originally wrote this song to help himself make some sense of his feelings of us entering the first Gulf war. It was written about a couple from the Vietnam wartime. Sad how it sucks the same no matter what war we are talking about. People die and others who love them have to face that pain and find a way to go on. Here's a thought, how about we just have the leaders sit down and talk FIRST and avoid all the death and loss and pain. Home Free are just so incredible at making you feel the "intent" of the lyrics so easily. They can make you mad and break your heart all in one fell swoop. WOW!!!!

This hits hard in our home. My husband and I are both Navy hammers vets.Neither of us were deployed, but had many friends who were. Fast forward to our son who retired 4 years ago , after 30 years in the Army. Three wars, many deployments, and so much stress, worried about him. Thankfully he made it home in one piece, helping many of the men who served under him to get the medical aid they needed. A!l props to our military, and the families at home who love them.
The Dixie Chicks version was the opposite of this. It was a guy that went away and the girl at home. My husband and my three sons were all in the Navy. My youngest was in Iraq 2 times and it was so scary. This is an amazing song done so well by our guys. Thank you for your reaction to this song.
I had 3 uncles in Viet Nam at the same time. One came home injured, with shrapnel in his leg. One came home in a body bag. The third escorted his two brothers home, and then went AWOL. Can you imagine finding out your brother has been killed, but not knowing which one? That's what happened to the two surviving brothers. They were almost a week before they found out it was the youngest.
This is such a beautiful and heart wrenching song. I love that Home Free doesn't shy away from difficult topics. They did an amazing job at getting the meaning of the song across with their harmonies.
I think the original is from Bruce Robinson and was later covered by a group called The Chicks (a female group). I don't know of which they did a cover of it as the original is with a male soldier writing to a girl. Maybe they tweaked the lyrics a bit.

In the mid 90s they did a thing here where you could write letters and they'd be delivered to various service men and women so I sat down and I think sent in about a dozen letters. I got back almost as many as I sent out and several of them I kept writing to long after Operation Desert Storm was over. It was kind of funny how with a few I really had these strange connections to, like one guy his sister's name was Susan and his name was the same as one of my brothers. Another knew of the little village I lived in as he had come to the amusement park here and his family stayed in the area to visit some of the smaller tourist attractions here. There's a pond just a few houses down from where I lived that was fed by underground hot springs and never freezes. I mean we had a blizzard (I think in 1978) that hit the entire state and our small village was literally snowed in for about 2 weeks and the temps never got above 25 but the duck pond only had a few ice chunks in it and everything around town was covered in more ice from the steam that was coming off the duck pond. So this guy knew of it and of all the places it was just so funny that he knew where my little village of less than 1000 people was. But this one guy, Tyrone, he and I wrote back and forth for several years, even after he left Iraq. My last letter was from Germany and he was heading back to Iraq in a few weeks, and as long as it took to get mail back he was just a few days from leaving, but he asked if he could call me before he headed out. I didn't want to wait so I called him. He was so surprised and I could hear people behind him snickering as we were talking, nothing lovey dovey but just like we'd been lifelong friends and closer than if we were a couple. I think we talked for almost an hour - and let me tell you when my parents got that phone bill they went thru the roof!!! - but we talked about everything and nothing. He told me about this box of things he had been picking up and mailed to me and wanted to make sure I knew it was coming. He didn't know what his new address would be but said he'd call me as soon as he got it so we could write again, he didn't think he'd be able to get a call out to me. That call was the last time I heard from him. I still have the box of things he sent me and just about every letter. I have no idea what happened to him, he was from South Carolina and I don't even know how to go about looking for him. I've thought of him so many times since then and this song makes me miss my friend so much.
This was so beautiful, and I’m glad you were able to write to these soldiers. I’m fairly certain that if you go to the local VA office, they can help you at least know who to ask. Usually if you can tell when and where they served, someone can look up their unit and figure things out. I hope this helped and I hope you find out what happened. It’s probably not going to be easy, but at least you’ll have that closure. Hugs! 🫂
@@ruthrogers1711 Thanks for the info. My dad is a vet and goes to the VA usually for doctor appointments but I know I need to take him in so he can get his life insurance stuff updated. He had it set up to be divided between my sibs and I and my sister has since passed away and we need to update all that. But I don't know why he did it, but Tyrone sent me his social security number before he was shipped back to Iraq. There wasn't much about each other that we didn't share but now that I think of it I guess that's one thing we should have kept to ourselves. I'm not to sure if I will be able to handle hearing if something bad has happened to him but knowing I could go there and maybe find out, well it #1 hurts thinking I'll hear something bad but #2 it's nice to know I might be able to find out once and for all
@@candleburner2006 if you were that close, I doubt he would have just gone radio silent for this long of his own accord, so prepare your heart for that. But knowing his social, you are more likely to be able to find things. My only concern is whether they will release that information to you. I haven’t tried to get records for anyone outside my blood relations, but I think after a certain amount of time they consider this sort of thing public record. I wish you luck!

Home Free, again, brought tears to my eyes. The guy is a veteran and the lady is active duty. My family has represented all the military branches, and I'm so thankful that we never received a letter saying they're coming home. As Rob sang, you never want to be alone when the letter says a soldier's coming home because it means they died. My dad (Normandy--Army), my youngest daughter (Iraq, Afghanistan, Qatar, Oman--Air Force), cousin (Navy), cousins (Desert Storm--Marines), oldest grandson (still active duty--Air Force), nephew (still active duty--Army). My heartfelt prayers go out to all those who have lost a loved one while they served to protect our wonderful country.
This was done in the 60’s or 70’s about a Vietnam soldier (male). It was made popular by the Dixie Chicks. HF changed it up for a female soldier. Both actors are/were soldiers which is cool. When I was a kid, we went to all the football games, they read the names of locals who died in Vietnam that week. Understand that we didn't have social media, only newspapers and not so local 3 channels on TV if you were lucky. They read the list of any lost in our county, not just our little town. There were some of us who actually found out someone we knew died. Family and closest friends of course already knew. But not a great way to find out for anyone. The Dixie Chicks were fantastic with this song. And I didn't think Home Free could outdo that one even though they always seem to be better than the original. And I was wrong. Home Free took this song and made it their own, just like they always do!

This song was written in the sixtys l don't remember the song sung by. In the 90s it was redone by the Dixie Chicks. A huge hit for them. Now being sung about the soldier is female witch is the opposite than the original. I loved the switch. Respect for all the soldiers
The Dixie Chicks live version of this has such gorgeous instrumentals and vocals, it is well worth reacting to as well. The guys here of course did an amazing job, taking nothing away from them.

I've seen quite a few reactions to this over the years, and you not only said it best, but also understood it best. This song might have my favourite vocals and harmonies, but it's too sad and too emotional to listen to more than occasionally. I feel no need to induce more sadness in the world.
I love the Chicks, but don’t remember this one. My daughter had one of their albums when she was a teen and I heard it in her room many times. Home Free did a fabulous job with this cover! I love how they swapped the genders as an homage to women in service. This song is bittersweet, but I love their cover. I always get goosebumps at the part in the gym. So affected by your reaction. You’re such an amazing human being, DJ, feeling emotional with this one! It definitely tugs on the heart strings.

Home Free switched the sexes from the original (Dixie) Chicks version. In the original, the soldier was a man. You should have been warned to have tissues handy.. The original version of this song *was* gender-swapped. I think it dates back to at least referring to the Vietnam War. It’s only slightly been rewritten.

Giving attention to females in the military was great, but I also thought that it was cool that they were both black. Black people often get their military service swept under the rug as well.
