When Adam was in the process of moving a few years back, he needed a home for a couple of guitars for a few weeks and I got to live with this baby. Played it every single day. I’ve never been a Gibson guy but this one is so special and magical. Even more so in Adam’s unique hands.
This is why GAS will never die. As soon as you are happy, there is always another guitar to chase. Either a better guitar or a model you don't have - 335 would be a bucket list guitar.
Rhett, this is one of your best videos yet! Could listen for hours to you and Adam jamming - that soul-full, melancholy expression of these 335's is just beautiful to the ears. Thanks so much for posting this!
I have an all original 1960 ES-330 sunburst that’s the best Gibson I’ve ever played. Haven’t found one more pristine either. My grandad bought it new in 1959 for $225!
@@jamesogara7053 Crazy! My grandad was not a wealthy 18 year old. $225 went a lot farther then than $2438 does now. But that was still a substantial amount for a guitar.
Man this will definitely go down as a classic video on your channel in my book. Will definitely be revisiting this video in the future. Great content, thanks Rhett.
That tone Adam gets from that guitar is exquisite. It’s pretty much perfect. And his playing is excellent too - never a wasted note, thanks for posting Rhett
What a beautiful guitar that is. In the hands of Adam it absolutely sings. Also, that Tone King is a killer amp. The experience level of both guitars shines through in the way they work together. Well done.
335s are amazing. I love my big neck 58 burst and fast neck 61 blonde CS reissues. They’re really so versatile but benefit from a high headroom, dynamic amp.
The amount of feel in the intro lick alone is inspiring. So cool to hear stories about how an artist comes to find their number 1. Maybe a series Rhett? Also the video just looks and sounds great!
I love this episode so much. Telling the story of a musician and their instrument and how they came to be. It's just very Rhett, and I think that's cool
What a pleasure to watch Adam Levy Plays with you ! You make me discover him and i thanks you so mutch for that ! Your 2 guitars sound incredibly awesome... Adam really Plays as he talks with a lot of sensibility, not to much words, laidback as well... Such a delight moment to listen both of you... I will Replay it on and on... Thanks ! Greetings from Normandy in France ! 😘
Not only is the subject matter awesome, this is a really fantastic looking video! Great job on the lighting and color tonality of the set that really compliments the guitars.
I love that type of videos, just pleasure to watch. And the vibe in that studio + video production is top notch, 3:08 for example, just like wallpaper, art, however you wanna call it
This reminds me of my search for a 335 in the early eighties (Carlton, Rios, Ritenour were my heroes back then). I traveled through half of Europe, everything I played was crap, including 50s and early 60s. Funnily enough, I stumbled across a Les Paul on my search (81 Heritage Standard 80), which then carried me through my time as a studio musician (with my Strat and Tele). I'm still looking for 335s, but to this day there hasn't been one that has inspired me. Maybe not my model.
Honestly this was a good vid. I really enjoyed it. I wish that you all would do a " couch session " like once a month or so........ and just play. This was good ~!~
Thanks for great playing ! It´s very intersting to hear you guys swapping guitars...there´s only a tiny difference in sound... but Rhett has still his more "brighter" tone on the ´64 and Adam has his "warm and rounded" tone on Rhett´s guitar. PS I´m very lucky to own two 335s from ´66 and ´67 i got around `84 for then $500 each and kept them both through good and bad times untill today !!!
The great thing about hand built old guitars is that they are all different: some serious dogs and some absolute gems. This is the latter. While new Murphy Labs are great, they don’t have the unique age of the wood and pickups. It’s as simple as that. Buy one with good specs, play the crap out of it, then appreciate the labour of love when you’re 65. This is my method for happiness!!!!
Very tasty playing. Rhett, that’s a lot of respect from Adam to offer you to gig with his guitar. Like you said, I’d be terrified! Looking forward to the course to drop…
Sounds great guys. Thanks for sharing. It’s really refreshing to hear every note played. The melodies and harmonies you created along with great dynamics was very pleasing, to my ear at least. Really good stuff you guys. This made my day! Thanks
Rhett, dare I say it, you are starting to give Rick Beato a run for his money, ha. That interview was nicely done bro. I love learning and I sure enough did.
That was sublime, but both of those 335 sounded great. I don't like to fetish vintage guitars as the key to great sound, but man it was really, really beautiful
Adam definitely takes minimum finger movement to a whole new level. I don't think I have seen someone move the fingers on his left hand so little. I'm sure that is textbook technique, just kind of fascinating to see.
Idk if youtube is compressing or not but wow. I’d love to hear this in the room. It’s got THAT sound that I hear when I imagine a great guitar in my head. Rhett’s sounds great too but the ‘64 may be one of the best tones I’ve heard come from a TH-cam recording in while.
There's no volume compression on youtube, this is a misconception. There's only bitrate compression (i.e. youtube audio is some kind of mp3 or aac, don't remember).
Lovely guitar, and semi-hollows make such a beautiful sound, but any early '60s Gibson in playing condition is an insane value proposition in the 2020s. (It was probably a tough nut to crack in 2003!). Rhett, do you have a video discussing affordable sem-hollows?
I know Chris, met him this Summer, if you're ever in SF...go and check out Real Guitars, amazing store and say hi to the young luthier working there, he's a buddy ❤
I have to be honest with you Rhett, your 335 sounds really good! No matter which guitar either of you were playing, you sounded like you, and Adam sounded like Adam.😊
I have a ‘62 cherry dot neck and a 2010 50th anniversary Memphis ‘60 reissue 335. The reissue is a great guitar but the ‘62 with its PAFs is something special. Gibson really had it together at the factory back then.
In 2016, I was in Russo's Music in Asbury Park, NJ, trying to decide between a Les Paul & a 335. I chose the LP. Wrong decision - I should have taken both!
The 65 just sounds older and wiser. Beyond a small amount. The high end is completely different. And sounds more mature and yummier. Sounds like a record as they say. The newer 335 is still a very nice Guitar and probably is at the high end of most's price range compared to a 60s 335 that is beyond. Adam is such a smooth soul. And a legend. PS. All Gibson's need Grover tuners though. to avoid looking sickly with those dead man's toenail's tuners. You can put them in the case for the collector.
I didn't know they had switched guitars, 😂, so I still thought the one Adam was playing was his and I thought it was beautiful! Goes to show the amp and the player have a lot to do with it also...
Must be something special about the 64. Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues also has a 64 from what I understand, cherry red. His was my first intro to the model. Then I started learning about who session players were and their contribution to the music I listened too. That's how I found out who Larry Carlton is and the line of Sire guitars with his name on them. I now have a black Sire H7V leftie on order which is a variant brand of the 335. Not sure why I'm putting this out there for the world to read. Boredum.
Being extremely jealous with players that manage to keep a guitar for decades, man that is dedication ! I could never do it with all the other options being around, even living in 1975 😉 Adam is a phenomenal player btw !
Back in the day they didn't measure pickups and put the hotter one in the bridge position. They just grabbed one out of the parts bin and soldered it in.
No offence to your buddy, Rhett but at least on my TV through Yorkville YSM1p monitors, your guitar sounded much nicer than the 64. The 64 had a spiked high thing that hurt. Yours stayed sweet.
It was such a pleasure to hang and jam with you, Rhett. I'm excited for our course!
Love your work with Norah, Adam. Always tasteful and memorable.
You talk so calm but enthusiastic, I can see you are probably a really nice guy and is visible your love on the 6 strings. Cheers Adam!
When Adam was in the process of moving a few years back, he needed a home for a couple of guitars for a few weeks and I got to live with this baby. Played it every single day. I’ve never been a Gibson guy but this one is so special and magical. Even more so in Adam’s unique hands.
Adam is a monster player. One of my favorite instrumental albums is Kibi Dango. Him and mason stoops tear it up all over the place.
I’ve had that record on repeat for weeks now.
This is why GAS will never die. As soon as you are happy, there is always another guitar to chase. Either a better guitar or a model you don't have - 335 would be a bucket list guitar.
Adam’s solo on Norah Jones’s ‘Be Here to Love Me’ is one of my favorite solos ever. Just perfect.
Rhett, this is one of your best videos yet! Could listen for hours to you and Adam jamming - that soul-full, melancholy expression of these 335's is just beautiful to the ears. Thanks so much for posting this!
My dad and I just recently got to play a pair of ‘60 335s with PAFs. Absolutely incredible guitars
I wish I could have jammed with my dad, that must be so cool. He didn't play with 335s. He was more into 357s, 32s, & 38s. 😞
I have an all original 1960 ES-330 sunburst that’s the best Gibson I’ve ever played. Haven’t found one more pristine either. My grandad bought it new in 1959 for $225!
That would be $2,438 in 2024 dollars.
@@jamesogara7053 Crazy! My grandad was not a wealthy 18 year old. $225 went a lot farther then than $2438 does now. But that was still a substantial amount for a guitar.
Wait, a 1960 in 1959?
@@rielwashere Yes, just like cars come out with 2025 models in 2024.
They had the new 1960 model out in 1959.
@@jamesogara7053 Which isn't too bad if you think about Gibson's pricing in actual 2024....
Man this will definitely go down as a classic video on your channel in my book. Will definitely be revisiting this video in the future. Great content, thanks Rhett.
It's all about the sound and feel. I love this. Adam's one of my favorites.
It should be, for Gibson it's only about profit
Rhett, you dont just play guitar.. You speak through the guitar.. bravo sir ❤
I feel the same about my current 335. I plan to never get rid of it!
That tone Adam gets from that guitar is exquisite. It’s pretty much perfect. And his playing is excellent too - never a wasted note, thanks for posting Rhett
This guy Adam is so smooth with it holy shit
What a beautiful guitar that is. In the hands of Adam it absolutely sings. Also, that Tone King is a killer amp. The experience level of both guitars shines through in the way they work together. Well done.
Adam is one of the tastiest guitar players in the land and a great educator. And one of the nicest guys.
335s are amazing. I love my big neck 58 burst and fast neck 61 blonde CS reissues. They’re really so versatile but benefit from a high headroom, dynamic amp.
That guy is a great player, I’ll look forward to the course you two are making!
WoW! Makes me want to get right back on my 335 ASAP. Great to hear the tonal blends played with such charisma!🎉
I have to agree with you Rhett, that is the Gibson sound to me. Tasty jams, thanks so much for sharing
The feel in Adam’s playing is sooo sweet - I would love to take lessons from him one day.
Man, that intro jam could not be long enough. Absolutely beautiful.
335s are magic. Owning one since Dec' 2023.
Not completely sure about the guitar, but we should all consider to study Adam Levy…
What a pleasure to watch Adam Levy Plays with you ! You make me discover him and i thanks you so mutch for that ! Your 2 guitars sound incredibly awesome... These guys should play one of the Collings I35 (LC). I am very confident that they both would be very surprised/impressed/overwhelmed!
Levy has the most engaging, meaty, juicey sound I could hear all day!

I was lucky enough to find a used CS '64 335 for a great price. Looks just like that one and is the overall nicest guitar I've ever owned or played.
Wow! This episode was awesome!!!!!! I have a 2009 ES 335 made in Memphis that I love!
Very entertaining Rhett and Adam, thanks!

Great recording and video Rhett! Adam, is an incredible player and his 335 is perfect match for him. Time to play my '64 335 now too haha
Honestly this was a good vid. I really enjoyed it. I wish that you all would do a " couch session " like once a month

Looking forward to meeting you both at the fretboard summit this year!
Great video, great playing, and great tones!
Great video. I’m a huge fan of the 335 platform.
Great vid and jam guys! Luv hearing the stories behind these nice instruments, just watched the story Rick dropped on his uncles bass, so cool.
Gibson should study this guitar. So they can make a replica and sell it for 30k
Hahaha
Underrated comment
They do have a CS '64 335 that is excellent. "Only" $6k though

Adam did Rhett a solid @ 1:21. I miss jamming.
I miss it, too. As a young man, music was my life. It's been many years now since that was true & life is def lacking.
Your best video to date! Love that 335!
Great video man! Also, I’m a huge fan of Adam so anything with him in it I will watch at least a dozen times lol

He gets me every time with such lines xD❤

Based on what I can hear through TH-cam, I can't say I prefer the sound of the older guitar. However, I definately prefer the LOOKS of Rhett's.
