I genuinely couldn't believe how unfair his review was. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of the lens (it's fine, just expensive for what it is), but to call it a scam was totally uncalled-for.
@@TomCalton After the cooler-crap Linux pulled a while ago, it's easy for me to believe they'd do it more than once. This time they didn't at least steal the product.
I buyed the Viltrox and I'm impressed of the AF. It needs a higher amount of contrast in post, the colors are not brilliant, but on the A6500 it's a great and lightweight lens for streetfotography, ideal for hidden shots.
have you ever used the ol' sony pancake 20mm f2.8? if so how does it compared to the viltrox? i'm considering between the two since the sony one has a larger aperture, but if the viltrox is sharper i might just got for the viltrox
Hey great video. I have a massive collection of wide angle lenses both modern and vintage. One of the ones that I have that's not a pancake lens but is pretty small is a Risespray 25mm 1.8 it's a very good lens and cost me less than $30 with shipping. It's a well-built lens and works great on my Sony crop sensor mirrorless.
I like M4/3 Olympus 9mm F8 Fisheye. It is cheap, tiny, super wide and has plenty of resolution. And other great one is Pentax DA40/2.8 which is FF capable AF lens with full metal body and excellent build quality.
This video came in like a dream, I was skeptical about the 7Artisans 25mm F2 for my Fuji X-M5 but I’ll definitely get it, there’s also a 50mm F2 that’s the same size actually, I might get that one too, great video m8 !
I really liked this comparison. I think it’s amusing to see what goofy things different makers come up with, but also the ones that are actually useful. If I had an S9 I would very likely buy one of these. My S5 is already big enough that a conventional prime doesn’t change the size or portability much. I really like the pancake concept for my MFT cameras, though.
I do like pancake lenses, and it is nice to see so many coming out, albeit with various quality. As I only have one mirrorless camera (M43) two of my three pancake lenses are actually for DLSR's. One is clearly an APS-C only one and the other is FF compatible as it is in effect an AF version of the same lens of nearly 50 years ago. So I am keeping my Pentax DA21mm and DA40mm(the one you can use on FF). But anyone considering pancake lenses, go for it! There are some utter gems out there and they are FUN!
40mm equivalent pancake is the best bet. True normal. Decent udable aperture, sharp. The EF 40mm 2.8 is one of my favorites and most used lenses ever. It measures at 43mm exactly
I bought the 7Artisans 18mm f/6.3 II but had to send it back because the focusing had no stop, the front part just fell out. After watching this video I bought the SG-Image 18mm f/6.3 which arrived just yesterday and which seem to be even nicer than the 7Artisans (even if the latter isn't broken). I like the hood/filter adapter of the SD-Image.
Great video, thanks! Agree entirely, the Vilrox is amazing regardless of size. Also just purchased the Viltrox 40mm. Actually using the Viltrox lenses more than my Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 for travel at this point leaving very little compromise at home.
This was super useful. I'm always looking for ways to make small APSC cameras pocketable. I'm going to get the ttartisan but that little 18mm f6.3 and the 28mm Viltrox AF are cheap enough to seriously consider as well.
What about autofocus lenses? I'm thinking sony 20mm 2.8, lumix 20mm 1.7, fuji 27mm 2.8 (non wr) or ttartisan 27mm 2.8 All of the above match or supercede the ttartisan 25mm in weight and size. I can see that you were going with a budget of under 100 for this video but id love to hear your opinion on these slightly more expensive tiny lenses.
I would love to see a part 2 of this video with some of the more premium pancake option (brightin Star 28mm f2.8 comes to mind), it would be interesting to see whether the value of a more expensive lens in a niche like is actually worth it
Didn’t expect to see my AstrHori fisheye make the list and make it to A tier. Nice surprise. I should really use it more but the F8 makes it tough in the gloomy UK winter.
The twin of the TTArtisan 25mm F/2, the 50mm F/2 is also quite nice. It's a tad thicker than the 25mm but is just as cheap and it covers a full frame sensor, if one prefer long focal length it could be a serious consideration (it's very nice on APSC cameras which hides the corner flaws).
I was expecting the brightinstar 28mm f2.8 to be on this list, I've heard good things about that one but I guess it is on the more expensive side, looks really cool tho
Dont forget you dont have to always switch to apsc /super35 mode on ff, you often can just switch to 1:1 aspect ratio and keep more of the image circle
The ttartisan 25 f2 is the bargain of the bunch for APSC and M4/3, it is fabulous and delivers quality way beyond the price….. if you are a Fuji user, sell your 27mm f2.8 and buy this!
The TT Artisan 50mm f2 is the forgotten twin of the 25mm, it makes the smallest 100mm on a MFT body! I also hope you can get your hands in a MS-Optics lens someday and update this tier list, meanwhile chapeau!
It’s good that you included an AstrHori lens, but I think you missed the more interesting lens in their lineup, the 14mm f4.5 pancake. Its taken up a near permanent residency on my GX85 (where it gives me a very useful 28mm equivalent focal length ).
I forgot you live in Calgary now haha, you took some great images! I have the Kodak Funsaver 30mm f10 "cookie" for my Fuji and like it for that fun nostalgic disposable camera feel. Though I also want something that's actually usable lol, but smaller than my TTA 27mm pancake, so I've had my eye on the 7Artisans 18mm... just checked and can get it for $60CAD so will probably have to pull the trigger!
Good to know that there are nice alternatives to the Viltrox Chip seeing as they seemingly don't want to ship mine with the 40mm Nice List Mr Funny and Handsome!

Am I the only one struggling with the autofocus on the Viltrox? I'm using it on an A7SII and it seems to constantly hunt even if I have a subject sitting center frame.. I've just resorted to locking the focus by switching to manual focus, which kinda takes away the whole schtick of this lens.
So sad that I didn't see this video earlier. Ordered and waiting for 7artisans 18mm f6.3 already and you showed this SG-Image 18mm 😫 ... and no, I won't buy both :)
dude nice vid, i just don't get why your vibe is so cheerful and the scenery and some of the photos you showed are so grunge. It's like what i hear doesn't match what I'm seeing. Maybe this is not the best color combo for the background idk
Shame the Viltrox is not available as MFT! I´m assuming the SG Image 18mm f6.3 will be an equivalent of 36mm FF, making it ideal for street on a MFT body.

I picked up a Ttartisans 25mm f2 for £35 in cex last week, boxed, as new condition. It is absolutely brilliant for the money paid.

That 10mm f8 lens is fun! If you correct for distortion and stabilize the video using Gyroflow it actually covers a 16:9 region of a FF sensor well!
dang it I was hoping to see the Pentax DA 40mm f2.8
The TTartisan 25mm f2 is a great little lens and handles well on my Z50 body. Hope Viltrox makes their pancake lens available for Z mount soon!
I'm sure they will. It's very popular at the moment.

Exactly the video I was looking for, you found quite a few lenses I didn't know about even!
We need the Viltrox for Fuji x mount. I may try to print my own lens using an old disposable cam as donor too.

Don't fool people. I own 50/2 and the TTartisan is inferior to the 27/2.8 WR in several aspects.
The 32mm F10 is reused from a Fujifilm QuickSnap disposable camera. The wider APS-C version uses two of these lenses put together.
The TTartisan 25mm f2 is a great lens! But, how does the 7artisans 25mm f/1.8 compare?

True, though it's over $100 so didn't make the cut unfortunately
Not including TTartisans 50mm f/2 doesn´t make sence. its FULL FRAME lens for 70 USD and about 200g
