This World Leaders Forum program features an address by Rafael Correa, President of the Republic of Ecuador, titled Vulnerable Societies: Media and Democracy in Latin America, followed by a question and answer session with the audience.

The fact that Mr Correa was is able to learn English while earning a Ph.D in the US is incredible. Name one living US president that can speak another language?

Well, it pushes a message to isolate english as the language of power, why would you want to send a message of tolerance or humbleness, when you can flaunt your arrogance by forcing people to communicate in your language. He also studied at Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium. He and his future wife met there . She is of Belgian descent . Her name is Anne Malherbe Gosselin . It has been written that they they met at Catholic Mass and English language classes at the Catholic University of Louvain, in Belgium. Correa has said that what motivated his social democracy is "liberation theology" . Liberation Theology is an active christianity " in this life " of lifting the poor to a better quality of life . And helping the poor to develop their own political power. Among others Liberation Theology is credited to Pope John xxIII in the early 1960's . It can be argued that liberation theology goes back to Sir(Saint according to the catholic church) Thomas Moore in England in the 16th century , and described in his book "Utopia" . He and Erasmus in the circa 16th and 17th century started the Humanist movement( Humanism , among other things, promotes tolerance and a more equitable distribution of wealth) . La capacidad de trabajo sumada a un gran talento e inteligencia hace de nuestro Presidente el mejor que hemos tenido desde que se fundó la República del Ecuador. Some of you people need to stop talking about Correa's English. He has a heavy Ecuadorian Spanish accent, but his English is excellent and many Ecuadorians wished they spoke English as well as he does. I chuckle every time when he says at 0:59:25 "This is defamation, come on! This is slander" he says it in a very Ecuadorian way LOL. All joking aside, he is the best and most honest president our country's ever had.

Amazing speech! He really shows that he comes from the academia. He was very clear in his ideas! And in a foreign language. Impressive! I agree with him, the media doesn't want to lose their privileges, gets involved in politics all the time, not to inform but to defend their interests, and have no ethics (in Ecuador)!!! The people of Ecuador should be proud, that was an amazing speech!!! So there is hope in politics and media in our continent after all!! Thank you for the revolutionary ideas.

No es el mejor ingles pero es entendible, yo le entiendo, cualquier persona de habla inglesa que te diga que no le entiende estaria mintiendo, tiene un acento grueso pero....... es entendible.

this guy is brilliant, only a few president dare or have the ability to learn another language. his accent is strong but his grammar is perfect! I would make a protest any time in ecuador anytime rather than one in the US. Perhaps this is why journalists protest so much, they have nothing to fear. If it was a totalitarian state they all would be hiding or reporting from abroad.

And yesterday appeared a poll from all the Americas (North and South) about the calification of the Presidents of all the countries in the region, and President Correa is the only one with an approval above 75% of his people, after almost 5 years in the government. Let's not forget that before him, Ecuador had 7 presidents in 10 years.

He's correct about his lawsuit against El Universo. It was not a "desacato" lawsuit. It was a libel lawsuit: Falsely accusing someone of a crime in Ecuador is punishable for up to 3 years in prison. He was accused of "crimes against humanity" (a ridiculous charge). BTW, no one is in jail in Ecuador for libel -- a retraction is normally how it's resolved.

Correa is so right . In so many words i agree with his, to put in a nutshell by me , nemo , there must be a seperation of the private interests from the public interests . but our US supreme court decided in "citizens united" that speech is money . This is an outrage . We must overturn this decision . And we should make an amendment which separates private enterprise interests , from the public interest .
I'd say he is the first president that has ever existed in Ecuador in 300 years of history. the rest can't even be called leaders except for Alfaro. Correa is right about the media you know that even in the USA the media is really corrupt and "misinterprets " the information on porpoise or bias it. Some ppl see him too odd in opinions or contempt him as a socialist man, instead of doing that, they should try to understand why he is saying what he does, because he is all but a true socialist.

I really like what he is saying...buuut, isn't he reading the speech somewhere in his right and left? Trying to create the effect that he is talking to the public, he constantly changes where he looks at....
