      +M U V A H M A Y A, You are not the first or the last person to be confused about what a watershed is. It is hard when they are so big and you can't really see them. If you can remember that a watershed is an area of land (can be big or small) that slopes down, all the water follows that slope and pools at the lowest point. Imagine a funnel!

      Maybe some analogies would be helpful. I'll go from a maximum to minimum examples to help explain what a watershed is. They may not be entirely "accurate," but I believe they are helpful in understanding the general concept.
      First, think of the Continental Divide in North America ( I don't mean to add confusion). More specifically the "Great Divide." This Great Divide is where the continent is folded or pitched upward like a roof on a house. All the waters flowing west of the divide flows into the Pacific Ocean, and the waters flowing east of the divide will drain into the Atlantic Ocean, or Gulf of Mexico. So, if snow is melting on a mountain in Minnesota, which is east of the Divide (we'll call it Point A), it will end up into the Gulf of Mexico. How? How the heck does it happen that snow melt form a Minnesota mountain ends up of all places more than 2,000 miles away into the Gulf of Mexico, or Point Z? Well, it's mainly gravity and low places. Specifically, WHERE are these places from Point A in Minnesota to Point Z in the Gulf of Mexico? This WHERE the water gathers, pools, collects, embeds, and flows along the way is called the watershed. Gravity will cause the Minnesota snow melt to create a stream. The stream funnels and channels into other streams. These streams, and other water sources collectively will form the Mississippi River; the Mississippi will flow from Minnesota through several states, creating lakes, swamps, pools, standing water, creeks, tanks, ponds, bogs, lagoons, and other low-lying watery what-have-yous, then creates a delta in Louisiana before finally emptying into the Gulf of Mexico. These interconnecting stages of water flow in its various forms is the watershed. A person living in St. Louis or New Orleans will say "yeah, I live in a watershed, I'm on the banks Mississippi River...duhhh." Another person 40 miles inland may say "no, I don't live in a watershed I'm too far from the Mississippi." This person is LIKELY IN in a watershed also (and doesn't know it), even though there may be no obvious, or VISIBLE place of water like the Mississippi. Water can gather and collect that forms UNDERGROUND pools, brooks, streams, aquifers, etc. Water inland from St. Louis may not drain directly into the Mississippi at that point because there may be even lower areas southward bound before it gets to the Mississippi. That water may be deep in the soil as it moves. As they say, "water finds it own level," and if that level is underground, and it is the "best" way for that water to flow into the Gulf, it will follow that route. That route then is part of the watershed, and it again, it may be below you. Remember this, If water is flowing from Point A to Point Z (the Gulf of Mexico in this example), anything above and below ground in this example that GETS WET is in a watershed! I'm using Minnesota in this example, but the water could originate anywhere. The place of the water's origin, and the path it takes to finally drain is in the watershed. FOLLOW THE WATER! All of it, big and small, mighty and humble. This watery network and its very presence IS the watershed.
      Still no clue? Let's try this, a man-made watershed! The above video uses a house like shed to show that it is the wrong kind of "shed." I'll use it also, but in a different manner. My example may be absurd, but I still think it helps conceptually in describing what a water shed is. If you live in an area that gets a reasonable amount of rain, generally you will have a pitched, or an A-frame type roof on your house to drain the rain water and/or snow melt. You may have a gutter to collect the water, and then a drain pipe that takes the water down the side of the house to a collecting area, or onto the ground that further drains into the street curbs, which will flow into a river or reservoir, Point Z for this example). The roof where the rain hits is part of the "watershed," because it is a place or source of water flow that's going to Point Z. The gutter is part of the "watershed," because it is taking the water from the roof to be deposited at Point Z. Likewise, the down spout is taking water from the gutter to the street, so it too is part of the "watershed." The water flowing down the street curb into the sewer is part of this system. Note that there may be puddles in the yard, or standing water in low places in the street. These areas are part of the "watershed," because well, that's where the water is, and this water too will eventually drain and "find its way home." The rain water is obvious, but what about when you shower, or wash dishes, or flush the toilet? The water flow here is "underground," via pipes, but nevertheless it is still part of the man-made "watershed," that will channel its way to a final deposit area. Thus, your roof design and sewer system,/plumbing is part of a man-made "watershed." A june-bug taking up residence in your gutter better know it is living in a "watershed!" I know all of this weak, but hopefully you got the point.
      If that still didn't help, here's one more example, albeit silly, but it may work. Muvah, for this experiment, start crying! Cry, but don't wipe away your tears. Now go to a mirror. Notice the dried tracks of your tears. If you trace the tracks of those tears you have traced your own facial watershed! From the corner of your eyes downward and around your nose, (I have a big nose, and therefore a wide bend) down the side of your mouth to your chin. If we use the chin as the final deposit for your tears then we have described your watershed. ALL of the places where the tears flow from eye to chin is your watershed. I have a beard, so my watershed includes it too. Why the beard? Because you include ALL the places the tears (water) gathers and flows; on top of the face, AND INSIDE the beard which absorbs some of the water. Your cheek bones, and ears, are not part the watershed because no tears flow directly, or indirectly into those areas. I'm ignoring sweat glands, etc. for this example. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles had a song back in the 60s, "The Tracks Of My Tears." They could have named it "The Tears Of My Face's Watershed," but I guess that doesn't sound too sexy.
      Finally, if none of the above work then wherever you see the word "watershed," substitute instead the phrase, "area having water above and/or below the ground."
      Knowing if a watershed exists is the starting point for determining if an area can sustain life. No watershed, no life. I know it's a little difficult when we can't SEE an underground water table, or river, or aquifers, etc. but they exists, and start with the science of "where is the water we can't see, but know that it's there." Even if ya gotta use one of those ole-timey wish bone twigs that points to the water, it may help in defining a little bit of your watershed :>)
      If we continue to dump hazardous material into our dwindling "pure" water sources (our natural watershed) we will not survive. We will kill each other trying to get what's good that's left (if I must be a bit preachy).

      Maya B. watershed is the catchment area of a water body,for example imagine a lake at the center of a village,when it rains the water from various parts of the village would drain into the lake.here the entire village is the watershed for that particular lake.

    When I took my Geography degree 65 years ago, what is here being described as a watershed was called a 'catchment area'. The term watershed was reserved for the ridge, summit, or other higher area - not always at all high or prominent - which separated one catchment area from another. Imagine: at some high point in The Rockies a drop of rain falling in one place would eventually finish up in the Pacific, while a drop falling not many feet to the east would eventually finish in the Atlantic or the Gulf of Mexico; what stood between where those drops fell is what I call a watershed.

    • @brianwest7458
      @brianwest7458 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of the roof of a house - a pitched roof. A drop of rain falling on to the roof six inches from the ridge will run down the roof in the direction of the street; a drop of rain falling a foot away, just the other side of the ridge, will run down the roof in the direction of the back garden. That's a simple illustration of a watershed.

    This helped a lot. I was trying to figure out if the land around, say, a river, is part of the watershed and you made it clear that it is. So it seems like it is everything that allows water to trickle down hill into a river which can go down hill into the ocean.

    • @NathalieSOlson
      @NathalieSOlson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yay! Glad this helped. Yes, water moving downhill towards a river or even a wetland, lake, or anybody of water is the watershed.

      Antarctica has an average annual rainfall of 16.6 centimeters along the coastal edge, and less as you move toward the center - but still not 0. The average is actually around 2 inches per year. It's a desert technically, and a fairly extreme one at that. It's still a watershed.

      What are you confused about? I find one of the weirdest things is how you can't really see the watershed. From on the ground you don't see the water flowing down hill. Sometimes it makes sense when you go stand on a hill and watch rivers flow done.

    • @michaeladueck8113
      @michaeladueck8113 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really just water that flows from a certain area that eventually gets to the ocean. Could include steams, lakes, rivers, ground water, creeks, and more. The reason they said parking lot was because there are drains in there that the water slopes to that can eventually get to the ocean.

    Death valley is a water shed that's needing water in it because it would help the surrounding regions greatly if the extreme heat in death valleys low area wasnt evaporating all the moisture in the ground surface and atmosphere as intense as it is now. It's a big vacuum in the sky like the dry eye of the Sahara is where hurricanes form. Its low as death valley and is where Atlantic hurricanes form. Our Sierra Nevada mountains like mount whitney prevent death valley from doing that in the pacific. But it has effects on the monsoons in the desert in some different ways but not good ways because it dries them out faster making us lose water in the summer monsoons that could of fallen in the desert had it been a little cooler so the clouds could condense more.

    • @BattleRiverWatershed

    • @BattleRiverWatershed
      @BattleRiverWatershed  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +pharaohgirgzz Good question! I would suggest that a healthy watershed would be able to support all life found there, including in the water and on the land. It should also be able to collect, filter and store water, and then release it on its journey downstream clean for the next user. A healthy watershed should be able to clean out pollutants that are added, but like all systems, once it is over run with pollution it may not start to work as well anymore. It is a tricky balance, but a healthy watershed improves our communities, economies and the environment so it is very worth working towards! -Nathalie (BRWA)

      The ridge is like the outer rim of the watershed. Think of the funnel and running your finger around the very top rim. On the inside of that ridge, the water will flow into the watershed. Yep, you are right! Caring for our Watersheds is an international program (with contests in North America, Argentina and Australia) so our videos were made with actors from around the world. As to why we only have the western hemisphere in the video I have no good answer. Just what we in North America (where it was produced) are used to seeing I suppose!
