- If you were looking for a baseball card product to open with a nice cigar and glass of scotch, I think this is what Pinnacle was going for with 1996 Pinnacle Aficionado. I bought this box of 20/24 sealed packs for about $45 on eBay after shipping. That works out to much less than the $3.99 the packs retailed for in 1996 so I went for it.
The set was produced for "fans with a passion for the game" and marketed as a "premium" release, but only lasted for a single year. All base cards featured a sepia-toned player photo, a wood grain-type background for the gold foil nameplate, and a player portrait that utilized what Pinnacle dubbed as "Heliogram" printing (spot holographic foil with black ink) on a 24-point thick cardstock. The box was supposedly sprayed to give it a bubblegum scent but I couldn’t pick it up when I opened the cards. Probably wore off when the plastic seal came off.
No key rookies but some cool insert sets: Slick Picks (1:10), Rivals (1:24), Magic Numbers (1:72), and the Artists Proof Parallel (1:35).
Overall, this was a cool set and if you can find these packs in the $2-3 per pack range, it’s worth checking out for sure. Let me know what you think. As always, thanks for watching and have a great weekend!

Great looking cards. I have a few.
Panini tried to bring it back for basketball a few years ago but wasn’t as good as the original.
Oh wow I never knew that! I just looked it up, it was 2016-2017 Panini Aficionado. I wish the 1996 baseball set had some of the insert sets that were in the basketball version though.
Another set I’m not to familiar with, nice rip! Have a great weekend!
I saw these online and had to look them up to figure out what they were. Goes to show how many sets these companies were churning out in the mid 90s! Thanks for watching and have a great weekend too!
