    I'm glad I found this video and I agree heavily on the proportions with this newer x-wing being the best. I thought I was going crazy when everyone else kept saying that it was too bulky so I figured I was in the minority though I knew something about it just felt right. I think a majority of the backlash for this set just stems from the fact that this is the 3rd UCS x-wing model and people just being disappointed that it wasn't something else and why it's also being compared with the 2013 x-wing. Considering how I never got any of the prior UCS x-wings, this one will definitely be up my alley! I'll probably pick it up on a sale though because I have a feeling this will end up being another Luke's Landspeeder situation where you can find it for really cheap months later.

    I agree 100%. The plaque thing doesn’t really bother me though because it’s not nearly as in your face as the Porsche plaque, lol. What does bother me is R2 being so small in the ship. So, I’m just going to mod the stand to have him stand opposite of Luke.

    I was initially turned off by the first pictures of the box, but I’ve really come to like it after seeing more pictures from different angles. $240 is a little steep, so I plan on waiting to see if I can get it around the $200 mark. I’m likely going to get it at some point.

      But for today's standards it's sorta underwhelming for a ucs set it may improve a bit from original which it should at this point be way better

    Its definitely cool, and its nice for those who missed the 2013 version. But my only gripe is that, lego got the sides correct, but some how still can't get that gentle little gradient slope from the canopy down to where the "snout" meets the nose.

    I agree with you on every point you made. This set is pretty good for what it is and is going to be a day one buy for me, since I have the 2015 UCS Tie Fighter to go along with the X-Wing. I also agree with the fact that this shouldn’t have been the May 4th UCS set for this year. In my opinion LEGO should have remade the UCS Tie Interceptor which also came out in the year 2000. It would made more sense to remake a the Tie Interceptor, since the Tie Interceptor was first introduced in Return of the Jedi, and would have been a good choice for a $200 dollar UCS set even thought there is a play scale version coming out in August of this year.

    Great video. I like your sensible overview of the set and its accuracy. I also agree that this wasn't the year for this set and a B Wing would have made way more sense and really the only logical choice, given that there are play scale Tie Fighters and Tie Interceptors in circulation

    Not only is this a nicer looking x-wing, it is also is an awesome introduction to new collectors. For ucs this doesn’t seem too overpriced in my opinion. Some, non retired, ucs sell near 900 now. Therefore reasonable. I love the studs. Front of the ship is clean. What’s the big problem? I think this is folk that paid a pretty penny for the original two, and now are frustrated they will need to shell out for another to finish their collection.

    Honestely I kind of like it a lot. I am interested in buying it , but not on May the 4th. I will most likely wait a month or so to get it. The $240 price is a little expensive so hopefully the price might drop a bit , I am either going to buy this or the UCS Lukes landspeeder. Great video

    Nice video! Agree there should not be hate towards it, however constructive criticism should not be called hate.. I see that as in fact passion, corny as that may sound.. passion for the X-wing, SW and Lego in general and simply a desire for something that represents the best of all those worlds. IMHO this model looks unpolished and maybe even rushed to market with shortcomings that could have been made better…there are Mocs in the Lego community that do get these things right.
    - the whole nose has a too straight and bulky shape, with an even bulkier nose cone. It should be slimming off towards the nose much more and look much more sleek. Capturing the angled shapes is a nice touch but only gets it half way.. again it is very possible to get the shape right with Lego as it has been done by others.
    - the cockpit canopy is really off with the incorrect angle, should not be sitting straight on top, rather at a slanted angle, and it unfortunately looks even worse on the bulky nose than on the older ucs one. Looks small, even pasted on, from some angles. For instance on the box art..
    - there is no reason for the studded plates on the side of the nose, just adds even further to the bulky, sloppy feel of the model.
    - engines larger, which is better, however the empty holes in the front really draw attention to the lack of detail in there, there should be some fan blades or like a cone shaped thing in there..
    - R2D2… 🤦‍♂️ nuff said.
    I don’t think a designer at Lego should be happy to market this model before getting all the above right.. especially when they have amazing models out there, that demonstrate that for sure they could do better. .. and there are Mocs that look better…A UCS model is not a play set, it is an expensive showcasing model, and as such it should be held to that standard by both Lego and the consumers.. “okish” I think is below what they should aim for and below their price tag..
    On a positive note, I do think the build would be fun, given all the angles and folding wings and stuff it has going on, but in terms of finished model, it doesn’t capture the sleekness of an x wing at all..
    Maybe it will look better IRL, maybe the photos are not doing it justice, but currently in my opinion, it’s the worst/sloppiest looking “newish” UCS model to date…

    • @fivelonelyclones
      @fivelonelyclones  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It captures the sleekness of the x wing perfectly. Again I think the reason people are saying it’s too bulky because they’re used to the 2013 model and because it’s so big that obviously it’ll look bulky if you look at from the wrong perspective.I’m telling you the proportions on this set could not be better, the engines size, the nose/snout width, it’s all the right proportions. And the nose is still more accurate than any other ucs x wing we’ve gotten. And I say ucs because it’s easier to get the round nose shape on the minifigure scale models and that’s where your moc argument comes in too. They make those mocs to be minifigure scale and at that scale they have a bigger variety of curved pieces to finish off the nose and make it as perfect as can be. But at this scale they have a limited variety of pieces to make the nose. And this has been a problem in the past with other sets in the past. Now I’m not saying there’s not a way to make the nose better I’m sure there is, I’m just saying it looks good especially compared to the other ones we’ve gotten and taking lego’s infamous laziness in to account.

    • @11-Spitfire-11
      @11-Spitfire-11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well agree to disagree on the sleekness bit…😉 but I think we can agree on that the shape of the nose isn’t right, yes the angles on the side are a step in the right direction but, it should also be slanting down all the way up till the nose cone and the canopy should be sitting slanted/angled downwards a bit. It’s very obvious if you look at an x-wing from the side. I think this is where the main issue lays with it looking bulky and wrong (and not sleek to some), especially from the side. And I’m not comparing it to the old one in this sense (since that didn’t get that right either) I’m just comparing it to the real thing, or real, well the props/cgi ship…Now getting that nose accurate is for sure one of the most difficult things with Lego, absolutely. That is probably why Lego still on its third stab can not make it look like the real thing. However, there are Mocs that do get that right, yes agree, predominantly minifig scale ones, but there are also a few in similar scale and even bigger ones. So for a company that can essentially print any piece that they need, it should be easier (and absolutely doable) than for us mere mortals….true this is probably where the Lego laziness you mentioned plays it’s part.. …on that note, I mean come one, if you wanted to build the most perfect x wing you could, would you really have put that R2 in there?? It looks ridiculous.. like someone’s kid came into the office and playingly put R2 in the model… and then everyone laughed… and then a bean counter came along and had light bulb moment… and while it’s not a huge deal, can easily mod that or just not put him in,it does in my opinion unfortunately also send a message about the level of effort/strive for perfection on this one…
      For me personally, I didn’t have a chance to get the old UCS one, so I’ve been looking forward to a new one for years… and given some incredible builds out there, the Batmobile, tumbler, the icon cars, just to name a few, I did expect this iteration of the x-wing, not just be significantly better than the last one, but rather to be close to the real thing.. and although I do agree with you that it does get a lot of things more right and defo more accurate than the old ones, it just falls short in areas that make it overall to me look not aesthetically pleasing.. and somehow further from the real thing… but again it could be just the pictures adding 10 pounds, I really hope that… cause I would really like to like it… so I’m trying hard to see it through your eyes… cause I was dead set on buying it before the pictures came out…

    I wish it was $200 but man it looks good like it’s the most accurate x wing yet I also don’t get the hate. For me I don’t hate it as a set it’s very very accurate it looks darn good but as what it is I’m not that excited like imagine all the other things we could’ve got like it’s very iconic but like so many possibilities wish the 12 year streak of the may 4th set being an original trilogy set would break I swear imagine a prequel ucs set damn like you said it’s not the best choice I mean doesn’t have to be not an original trilogy set units just not an x wing but I would say this is an almost PERFECT set I love the engines I thought it was too big but no it’s accurate I looked at pictures closely and loved it 10x they shouldn’t compare to the 2013 one they should compare to the actual source material the only thing I hate about this is the R2-D2 on top wish they had like a printed dome piece for a bigger size not a minifigure and the answer is very simple: it’s an Ultimate Collector series set otherwise and yeah the plaque the photoshop thing absolute disgusting behavior I hate it with a passion and don’t like that mini figure placement either otherwise it’s a gorgeous model

    This kinds goes down to the problem that most of the lego starwars community online seems to not really know starwars that well. They're not that big of Starwars fans as they are the lego sets made based on the Starwars which is a shame imo. That's why they compare this to the older lego set instead of actually remembering what the real x wing looked like.

      I completely agree with what you’re saying about sets being oversized. To me one of the best things about ucs sets was that they were minifigure scale. But there’s a limited number of ships they can make into minifigure scale that aren’t already minifigure scale at play size. So I’ve just had to learn to accept the fact we’re most likely always going to get oversized may 4th ucs sets.

      it's straight up worse than both previous USC models and in extremely frustrating and easy to fix ways like the wings being far too short.

  • @balljoint5853
    @balljoint5853 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not hating. I want a huge lego X Wing and I want to give Lego my hard earned money to get it but this is ridiculous. Huge, bulbous nosecone, fuselage doesn't even taper at the bottom, making the whole thing look like it's going to snap in half at the cockpit. Cockpit shaping is just all wrong. This is absurd for LEGO and absurd for 240 dollars. As much as I want a good UCS X Wing, that's not what Lego is providing here. It's not hulkbuster bad, but damn it's not great. At this huge scale and piece-count there's no excuse for getting the shape all wrong, when tens MOCs have done it way better at much smaller scale. It really seems like a first or second draft and Lego didn't give it enough time in the oven.

    • @fivelonelyclones
      @fivelonelyclones  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I’m just gonna have to completely disagree my guy. And it’s easier to get the nose shape at a small scale because there’s a bigger variety of curved pieces. For me it's pretty obvious where all the hate is coming from, and it's two fold. The first reason being that prequel fans (honestly, I still have a hard time believing that is a thing) have a lot of pent-up animosity toward OT fans. I can't say the bitterness is totally unfounded. When the prequels were released OT fans were pretty toxic in their hate toward the films. It never dawned on us that the young people in the audience would not have the ability to be as critical of the films as we were. The second reason is, I think, most modern adult lego fans come from that same demographic. With that being the case they do not seem to be able to separate their frustration towards their feelings of being dumped on from their objectivity about this set (which is clearly superior to every other x-wing in every way). In their minds, the release of this set just reinforces their belief that they are being disrespected. In a way it's hard to blame them, but I hope they get past it some day.
    I also saw somebody in the comments for this float the idea that most Lego-Star Wars fans are Lego fans first, and Star Wars fans second, and I have to admit that there is probably something to that. However, if that is the case they should root for this set to do well. OT set are much more likely to bring in non-Lego fans. Especially ships as Iconic as the X-Wing/Tie Fighter/Millennium Falcon etc. I have no doubt the upcoming Venator is going to be an absolutely beautiful set, but most non-Clone Wars fans won't recognize it as anything other than some sort of star destroyer. Meanwhile, in my own circle, I have two non-lego fans who will be buying this set. I'm sure Lego is hoping to bring in these type of fans with the hope of hooking them.

    The 2013 version is far Superior.
    THIS DID NOT NEED TO BE REMADE and took away drastically from what LEGO could have done for a 40th anniversary ROTJ UCS set, not to mention we've already had a remake in 2013 and a cracking play scale version accessible to all who want a Red Five/ Luke's X-wing.
    Red Five/ Luke's X-wing has NOW been made 3 times under the UCS banner and that is appalling. A severe missed opportunity to not have a TIE Interceptor or Shuttle Tydirium (which is exceptionally HIGH on the secondary market) at that £200 price point. The 2023 version looks far to Toyish with it being so fat and wide for my liking, making it appear like an upscaled version of the play scale model the studs on the sides combined with the Rear really destroys the finish of the model and any liking i could have had for this. (if i didn't already hate the fact it's being remade for the 3RD FREAKING TIME).

      Well I’m going to assume you didn’t watch the whole video. As I did say it was a bad choice for this year’s ucs set. Although put that aside and this is the best x-wing model lego has ever made and BY FAR the most accurate. I’m not going to restate everything I said in the video in this comment so just watch it for yourself. Also I still would have rather gotten a new ucs b wing over a new ucs tie interceptor because we’re already getting a play scale interceptor this year.

Just the funny onse :) Wings to short, parts falling apart, wings to wide open, nose straight like the highway :) and to big, r2d position is a joke, downside is nothing, cannons with swimming fins lol, gapes on every corner an so on...... the details that you mention are not important if they are to big or look ugly sry but somone has to buy it :)))

      The proportions are the best compared to the other 2 ucs x wings especially the engines just compare pictures :) and in Star Wars canon an x wing is about 13 meter long and 11.75 meter wide meaning the length is about 1.13 times the width :) and this set is 22 inches long and 18 wide so it’s about 1.2 inches longer then it is wide which is very close to the real x wing given the limitations of LEGO pieces :) the wings open to the perfect angle making it look more intimidating and more accurate :) the wings on the other 2 models didn’t open enough :) the only reason the nose is straight on top is because they included that little square divot that I talked about in the video :) putting r2 d2 in it is pretty dumb because it’s oversized so just don’t put him in there :) and the diver flippers on the canons is a really cool technique that makes it incredibly more accurate than the 2013 model that just use a flat 1x2 with studs showing :)

      @@fivelonelyclones sry cant believe you really believe in what you writing :) i know its sponsored but no chance anyone is an star wars fan / x wing will say it looks goid. By the way the 2013 looks better. If they would have just mixed them that would be an improvemenr! Again wings too short and that is impotant for a display set. The noae looks like somethin you would use to deatroy another ship. Swimming fins oh man, and the gaps and take a look between the wings if you did not. That x wing is far away what they could have done if the deaigners would have free hands if you dont see underatand then you sry have no knowlege in lego building . My english is not very well but ppl who new about lego and there strategy understand what i ment. Youll see just wgen you take the nose be carefull the side panels will fall apart just another one to mention. Yea and just take a look of rhe original but compare the pictures from the right angl ppl can see the difrences. No no, we DEFINITELY need to keep hating on this awful set. there's zero excuse for making an xwing set this misproportioned.
    i have zero idea how you can look at an xwing, then at the lego set and go 'ah yes, this is accurate'. like, get glases bro.
    the body is way to fat, the engines are WAY too big, the wings are too short. on top of that, all of the detailing on this set, literally all of it, looks worse than both the 2000 and 2013 versions.
    also for the record, the 2000 usc xwing does not have entirely flat sides and is by far the best version to date.

      @@fivelonelyclones i mean, you showed a picure and said it looks the same as the lego model, which just blatantly isnt the case.
      Yes, you are correct, the engines on an xwing ARE large, but the issue isnt the size, it's the scale to the rest of the model.
      the engines to cockpit ratio is more or less fine, maybe a tad too big but close enough. however, the whole rest of the ship is WAY too small in that case.
      the body needs to be a lot longer and thinner and the wings also need to be longer if you want that scale to work.
      it's FAR more glaring that the engines are out of scale with the wings and body than the cockpit as per the older versions and it makes the whole thing look way off.

      @@fivelonelyclones feel free to go measure it.
      In the movie the wings are ~5.25x as long as the engine is wide.
      On the model they are only ~3.66x as long.
      It's glaringly obvious and completely inexcusable, especially given how trivially easy it would have been to make the wings the right length.
      The body length to engine length ratio is also out, not by quite as much.
      The bottom line is you eye balled it and said 'yeah looks fine' even though that simply isnt the case.

      @@TJMiton bro an x wing is abt 13 meters long and abt 11.75 wide so you definitely got that wrong and the actual size of in universe ships is tricky because often times they change between canon and legends. Also I don’t even know what you mean by the engine width relative to the wing length I guess you mean the gap between the engines. Also in canon the length of an x wing is 1.13 times the width and in this set the length is 1.22 times the width so it’s almost perfect

    It’s a lazy design. The cockpit is STILL COMPLETELY WRONG. After all this time. In a collector’s set, I would expect an attempt at accuracy. That did not happen here. The 2017 Falcon reframed everyone’s perception of what Lego is capable of in the realm of replication. As they say, “no take-backs.”
