Gary, how would one detemine if the valve guide are still ok, meaning not damaged ??

Hey Nico a simple way is to remove the valve spring and take the valve stem and wiggle it in the guide, if there is excessive play then it needs replacement, best to have an engineering shop give it an inspection.

What was the cause of the timing belt issues? Poor maintenance?

Yes poor maintenance low quality oil used.

What's are Symptoms of bent valve

The engine will misfire when running. If more than one valve is bent, it may not start due to a loss of compression when valves are bent.
