    This is why evacuating is so important. And if you can't afford to leave, there are generally designated places you can go to that are safe. Once the hurricane begins, you can't leave. Cat 4 hurricanes are not something to play with! Our area here in S. Louisiana is still recovering from Delta and Laura that hit two years ago! Prayers for the people of Florida and all of the people who will be helping to rebuild!

    Please don't judge those that did not evacuate. I'm a Andrew survivor, some of you cannot possibly know just how fast things change and orders for evac come through at the last minute in certain flood zones as conditions change and leaders have to make drastic, last minute decsions and changes as assessments come in. Hold off on the judgement unless you have lived through something like Ian or some other major disaster. Thank you. ~Native Floridian for nearly 50 years, having lived extensively in South, Central and now, Northeast Florida. Peace!

      Oh please. I grew up in Florida. People don't take these storms seriously. They always think they're the ones who will be the exception to the rule. I've seen people with plenty of money, stay put and then cry the blues that they had to spend three weeks without power after a storm.

      Listen, if you live on the coast of Florida and a hurricane is headed in your direction YOU EVACUATE!!!
      ITS A NO BRAINER.
      We here on the east coast Broward and Dade, cancelled schools and were told to stay home because hurricanes are unpredictable. Last minute they can do anything. Any Floridian that has lived though 10s of hurricanes will tell you that.
      I dont think anyone wants to judge these people, its just common sense. Humans are nothing against natural disasters.

    I have to say it. I know there are many situations that lead to people not able to leave or having good reason to stay. But it feels like a LOT of people had means to do the right thing and evacuate but didn't. It's NOT JUST ABOUT YOU PEOPLE. Damn. When you stay and if you need help, you are taking away help from someone who needs it not by their choice! You also put rescuers, who are PEOPLE too at risk. SMH.

    • @pa5666
      @pa5666 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. There's a lot of people in the comments saying "but they can't afford it". That's precisely why shelters exist. They not only harm people who need actual help when they choose to stay, but the first responders as well who need to risk their lives for the other persons bad decisions.

    • @amy109
      @amy109 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was under the impression that people didn’t leave because they thought it was going to hit Tampa and once they knew it was coming it was too late to leave (like in Katrina when traffic was jammed and stuck in the storm).. but those islands that were destroyed. Even if it was going to hit Tampa I would’ve left, even if it’s far away. That’s too much of a risk. Now hundreds are dead. Devastating 😔. I’m assuming most are elderly and possibly didn’t fully comprehend what was about to happen.

    • @RebeccaStout
      @RebeccaStout ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amy109 I heard someone else say that. But how can anyone with half a brain look at that giant storm that covers almost half the state not guess they could possibly be in danger? Hurricanes often make last minute twists and turns. Sigh. I dont get it. The thing that makes me mad is when people choose to stay with children, elderly, handicapped and pets. It's their obligation to care for them and keep them safe at all costs as they... have no choice.

    If you don't live in an area that gets regular Hurricanes, please don't ask why people didn't evacuate.
    Yes, there are people who are just stubborn. Some people stay behind because they are worried about looters. Some just don't believe it'll be that bad. The vast majority of people that stay behind either have no extra money or have no way to leave. For Florence in 2018 the closest hotel room available was over 7 hours away. If you haven't lived it you just don't get it.

      Takes mony and resources to evacuate. Everyone can't just find the extra cash for gas, hotel room. And all the models said this would weaken to a cat 1 and hit farther up the coast. It's hard to know where to run when the professionals don't know where the monster's going or whether it'll be a monster at all. A cat 1 is little more than a severe thunderstorm. Even mobile homes do fine during cat. 1. This grew, quickly and never weakened as predicted.

      It’s not that simple. The difference of a hundred miles means thousands of different people evacuating. There are only a few major roads out of Florida and they get backed up. Not everyone has access to vehicles or vehicles that can handle that distance. Add in that there’s no where close by to go.

      @@susanwright7682 they had a week to leave, I'm on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and lived in South Louisiana, mandatory evacuations are given first to the people on the coast who all, only have one way out, then the rest of evacuations are done in increments for people in low lining areas. When people listen to the orders given to them, evacuations can be done in an orderly and civil manner. If you can't leave get yourself to an emergency shelter. People who don't follow instructions are the people who get others killed. Everyone living on the gulf should put money and non perishables aside for hurricane season and be mindful of your neighbors if they're elderly and may need assistance.
