I think it’s songs like this that made U2 one of the 20th century’s greatest rock bands. When they went for this kind of pure rock songwriting, they were among the very best.

U2 formed in Dublin, Ireland around 1976. They went on to dominate the rock scene from the mid 1980's. 1990's, early 2000's, and won 22 Grammy Awards out of several more nomination s. I first heard them in 1978, and they instantly became one of my favorite rock bands. I enjoy Bono's vocals, stage presence, and performances. The guitar sound is also unique. I think it would be great if you reacted to more of their songs. I would suggest their rooftop concert in Los Angeles where they played "Where The Streets Have No Name." I enjoyed your reaction and got some insight from it.

@@OzzybinOswaldthe joshua tree album alone says otherwise pal. Name some rock bands who were better in the 80s and 90s. I personally can only name a few eg Queen ACDC and REM.
Def Leppard , guns n roses , van halen nirvana and oasis in the 90s as honourable mentions. U2 were great in the 80s and 90s just like guns n roses def leppard and the other bands mentioned.
What bands in the 80s do you rate better than U2 in either album and single sales , longevity , sold out stadium tours , fanbase , downloads , youtube views or what ever stat you like.
Im not even a big fan as im irish and U2 are bigger outside ireland than in it as most irish dont like bonos pontificating all the time.
You cant deny their talent and popularity especially in asia and south america. One of the only irish bands to break the US.

@@OzzybinOswald im sure those bands are good pal pity punk didnt last like rock music has unless you consider greenday punk lol. The sex pistols , the ramones , iggy and the stooges , the clash and social distortion are what i call punk but they all were in their prime in the late 70s early 80s. At that time U2 were only staring out. U2 weren't my type of rock either way im more a guns n roses , led zeppelin and acdc fan of rock.

@@OzzybinOswald Oh plz, they were in the post punk and Alternative phase during 80s and 90s. They didn't really blow up till War and/or Live-Aid concert. U2 shift from the 80s to the 90s was some of the riskiest endeavors any band has done. The fact that Achtung Baby was made during the grunge era and still managed to be one of the greatest albums. Making an album like that, and be inspired from the Dance and Hip Hop genre at the time, and make one of their darkest albums. The fact that I had people said some song in that album sounds like something from NIN "With Teeth" album, should show how influential this band was at the time.

Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968. King led the civil rights movement since the mid-1950s as a non-violent movement to change the world with Love. The line: "Free at last" isn't just a reference to a soul flying free, it calls back to the final lines of MLK's famous "I have a dream" speach.

The late great Doctor MLK inspired my uncle John Hume, another great man of peace sadly gone, I've met U2 through my uncle, he is actually my Da's uncle but always Uncle John, after my Da died at only 56 the Edge and his lovely better half Morri took me under their wing, I was made redundant in 2020, thought I was loosing my house with my family next day three lawyers turn up with the landlord and Edge bought our house and gave us the deeds and 150,000 euros "to tide you over, you'll insult me if you refuse", Edge loved John, Edge and Morri are my wee girl Godparents, I turned 40 there and had a courier turn up, had all these big boxes, Edge got me a bespoke Gibson guitar in green and gold with Hume on it, an amp, peddles, it was unexpected and I do not like taking money for nothing, only thing I've given Edge he'll remember forever is the worst hangovers he's ever had 😂 respect from Ireland 🇮🇪, the North of Ireland, one day we will be united as a country and live in peace.

@@Drewcatmorris what a cool decent human being you are, it is I who is honoured, loved your comment and if there is anything you'd like me to pass on to Edge let me know, they have an album thsts good to go but they are doing the Vegas thing to buy some time for Larry to recover before setting out on their last tour, the three songs I've heard sound right off their Pop album, heavy and fun, the last hurrah I guess, I don't think it will be the last album but will be the last tour, they will do shows here and there still but after this one no more world tours, Bono was really ill not long ago and he's still not 100%, bloke is a madman even at 60 odd but time is a friend to no one, this tour was part of a deal they made, all I know is they want one last record that surprises the fans, they don't feel like they have done that since 1997, original cut of NLOTH was a sharp turn and they still felt burnt from last one, Edge has reworked Pop and its releasing next year as a remastered album, using same vocals but if you search 'U2 Pop demos Hong Kong' you'll hear what they wanted, just ran out of time, anyway I am rambling on here, much respect back to you and your family 🙏

I grew up on the early U2 stuff so 80's U2 will always be the best U2 to me - some great songs from 'The Unforgettable Fire' (1984, including this song but also some that weren't hit singles) 'The Joshua Tree' (1987), 'War' (1983), 'Rattle and Hum' (1988). I'd start with a sampling of the older stuff and work your way forward.

The song is most prominently about Martin Luther King Jr for being assassinated on April 4th, 1968 so that is what the "early morning April 4, shot rings out in a Memphis Sky" line means. It is mine understanding that was washed on the beach Roger Casement who was betrayed in the Irish Revolution of 1916. It also references Dietrich Bonhoffer who resisted the Nazis and of course Jesus and Ghandi. Very powerful message of his song.

Hi, I've loved all your reactions that I've watched so far. This was U2's tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. The first verses are more cryptic, but the 3'rd gives it away with the lyrics "Early morning, April four Shot rings out in the Memphis sky. Free at last, they took your life They could not take your pride". Another powerful song of theirs is Sunday, Bloody, Sunday which in general is about the period of fighting in Northern Ireland which occurred between Irish nationalists (mostly Catholics) and loyalists to the British government (with British troops involved), but it mainly focuses on the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Derry where British troops shot and killed unarmed civil rights protesters.

Caution: there was more than one Slane Castle concert. Please listen closely to the lyrics. It contains the most beautiful deepest lyrics ever. The late, great Johnny Cash agreed with my assessment. He called ONE the greatest pop song lyrically ever written. I could not agree more. I promise you will love it. Hugs. Mark

This song is not to do with civil wars or soldiers as some have suggested - it's the exact opposite. It's about 'martyrs' for peace (as it would, with the link to MLK and reference to Jesus). That's why I don't believe any of the lyrics are about Irish republicanism (although of course Bono's roots could make that seem likely) or anti-Nazism per se - this song is not about taking political sides, it's more a religious song.
The "one man caught on the barbed wire fence" lyric is probably a reference to Peter Fechter. He was a young East German whose family was separated by the Berlin Wall, and he tried to escape to the other side to be reunited with them, but was gunned down by guards in the no-man's land between the two sides, and died impaled on barbed wire in that zone because neither side would approach to save him. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Peter_Fechter
The "one man he resists" is likely Mahatma Gandhi, who was known for passive resistance against British rule and against religious violence between Hindus and Muslims, but was assassinated.
"One man washed on an empty beach" is probably the apostle Paul (also called St Paul) who was shipwrecked on the way to Rome to be tried for his evangelism. Although it's not known for sure if he was executed in Rome (the Bible doesn't say so although church tradition teaches he was), he likely died there without ever being released from prison.
And of course, the "one man betrayed with a kiss" is Jesus Christ.
Bono is paralleling Martin Luther King (whose first names incidentally also mirror the great Protestant reformer Martin Luther who stood up to the excesses of the RC Church) with these others who stood for peace and lost their lives for it.
