Snarky puppy is basically the bassist. He writes and arranges all the songs and then gets all kinds of musical geniuses to learn and perform the songs. They mostly have like a week for the entire record and do maximum 3 takes and that's it, the song is done..on to the next one. It's insane how talanted and well educated in music these people are. The drummer for this record for example, was an emergency decision cause the actual drummer got sick. So larnell lewis (the new drummer) learnt the ENTIRE record (so not only this song) on a 7 Hour flight to this gig just sitting in his seat and looking at the sheet music

Not at all true that League is the only writer and arranger.

I’ve watched every Lingus reaction on TH-cam and your “walk away” moment is the best moment in any of them. 😂 “It’s pretty good.” 😁🙌 Great video!

The guy preparing to walk away had already won assorted grammy’s before he even joined this group… The group was formed at a university in Texas which has been a mecca for the best jazz instrumentalists for decades.

Corey Henry on the insane synth solo. He's a multi instrumentalist who can also rock the drums and sing.
Larnell Lewis on the drums. He previously had played this and one other song. The rest he learned on the flight over.
The keyboardist in the purple shirt who got up and walked off is 7 time Grammy winner Shaun Martin. He passed away on August 3rd, 2024 from complications from a major stroke in 2023. He was only 45. He won 3 Grammys with Snarky Puppy and 4 with Kirk Franklin.
This is essentially a collective. There are a dozen regulars that tour, but people come and go as available. There is a great 38 minute documentary on TH-cam on the making of this album and the 12 day, 12 show tour of Europe they did at the time.
The bassist is the band foinder and leader. Many of the musicians attended North Texas University's music school. Michael wrote 5 and co-wrote a 6th song of the 8 on this album. What you watched is the actual album recording with zero overdubs. They would play two sets of songs a day for four days, only playing a few of the songs in each set. They then chose the best version for the album. The entire process was filmed so every dong has a video. The videos ate mixed into the previously mentioned documentary making the CD/DVD verdion about 90 minutes long. There are also out takes of solos from different takes of this snd other songs included on the DVD.
As you probably quickly figured out, the red headphones were the musicians and the silver, the audience. The string section is there for each session, but only performs on a few songs. They are not a part of the collective. Every song on this album is worth a listen. Snarky is an instrumental act, but they have two Family Dinner albums (also recorded live with a video for each song) in which they make their own arrangement of a singer's song and perform is with that singer.

Please react to a video featuring the drummer, Larnell Lewis, called 'Larnell Lewis hears a song once and plays it perfectly'. He's not just one of the best drummers around, but also just an amazing musician. He basically listens to a song he's never heard, and with no drum track, then writes a drum part without touching the kit, and then plays it perfectly in one take. Check it out.

11:13 the total package. Skills, knowledge, and flow, creativity, whatever you wanna call it. Actually, the whole band are just absolute pros.

Another song by them (sort of) to consider is "Don't You Know" featuring Jacob Collier - and then do another dozen Jacob Collier songs. Any of the 6 Grammy winners would be fine but I'd start with covers like "All Night Long", "Moon River" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" before moving on to his own music.
BTW, Snarky is kind of a consortium where players may vary but Michael League is the originator and leader. I just saw them live about a week ago.

another vote for Sleeper: Man plays Hosepipe.
what Cory has for chops in Lingus, Shaun has for feel on the hosepipe

5/4 until the piano solo, then 4/4 until the end

    • @miff227

i feel the first part "verse" in 5/2 and the chorus" in 5/4...the second section is plain 4/4 but good luck trying to count it :)
