Budget Astrophotography with a DSLR - Part 1

  • If you want to buy a telescope please check out the telescope top picks on my website: www.astrobiscu...
    Budget Astrophotography with a DSLR is surprisingly easy and despite the light pollution fantastic Deep Sky Photography from the city is within the reach of even a beginner. In this video I show you how to beat the skyglow and image nebula from an urban backyard or roof on a low cost budget of £150. This is fun astrophotography with incredible results!
    PART 1: • Budget Astrophotograph...
    PART 2: • Budget Astrophotograph...
    PART 3: • Budget Astrophotograph...
    My astrophotography setup: I photographed Orion with a DLSR, a canon EOS 1000D Rebel which I modified and a skywatcher alt az goto mount with a 102mm achromatic refractor telescope on top. All items were bought on ebay or Astro Buy and Sell UK.
    www.astrobuysel...
    The Target: The orion nebula is one of the brightest deep space targets in the nights sky. It also emits light in hydrogen alpha (Ha) and Oxygen II (Oii) wavelengths which can be used to our advantage when photographing from a light polluted city such as London.

    This has to be the best astrophotography channel. Nothing to hide using all the fancy and expensive equipment, and just shows proof that you don’t need to spend a fraction of the money suggested on getting similar pictures.
    This video is what actually got me thinking about buying a telescope, now that I have a fully manual Canon EOS 77D. All that is left to buy is a telescope - No, not an £800 telescope, but a cheap £70 used telescope.
    Thank you, astrobiscuit.

      @@no_mercy4183Gonna sound really bad but I haven't bought a telescope yet 😂
      I've done astrophotography though, I own an electronic ballhead as well for timelapses which can be calibrated to become a star tracker when using lighter lenses.
      I wrote this comment nearly 3 years ago, when I was 14 turning 15, so I literally had no money on me, now I'm 17 soon turning 18 with a part time job so who knows - I actually forgot about my plans to buy a telescope, mainly because UK skies are usually useless due to the weather 😅

      @microwavefries 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lmao I was looking for about 75 quid lol. Am I just really cheap or can I start with this? Or do I need to up my budget?

    • @HoneyTwee
      @HoneyTwee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@microwavefries you can shoot with £75 if you already have a camera. Maybe you can even use your phone through some binoculars or something.
      My setup is a vintage 1980s canon FD lens for £30 400mm and on my micro four thirds size camera the moon fills almost the entire frame, if anything it's too zoomed for andromeda, main thing I'm not sure about is if I will be able to capture enough light with it to get Andromeda without an electronic mount / star tracker. But I'm pretty sure I can with a little ISO cranking.
      I also got a £15 3x teleconverter and I'm going to see if I can photograph mars with it (probably a little ambitious but I'll be happy with a fuzzy red circle).
      So if you don't include the camera and super cheap tripod that's a £45 setup.

    Hi buddy,
    I'm new to astronomy so have been watching lots of different tubes to get as much information as possible, I have purchased a Celestron 130eq and since setting it up haven't had a single clear night (bad times) hopefully will get one soon.
    Just want to say that out of all the videos/tubes I've watched yours is the most inspiring channel.
    You make it funny yet informationaly packed and describe things in a way I am able to understand, and I know you have the high end equipment but love your budget bids too.

    Also on your website it has one of the best break downs of what scope to buy and why. FANTASTIC for beginners. There are numerous videos and sites - but astrobiscuit.com is one of the best.
    One teeny tiny request...... could you add a page or video on best budget DSLR's ? There are sooooo many cameras to choose from as a beginner. I think that a 'biscuit' like overview from budget cameras to top tier would be a SUPER addition to this channel. There is a lot of information out there i know - but i would love to see a discussion on this topic from his royal biscuitness. Also could include phone cams, eyepiece cams for comparison as well - which to choose and why.
    thanks!

      if your camera isn't modded the why not go for the Andromeda galaxy. Unmodded cameras work fine on Galaxies. If you get it it'll knock everyones socks off... its right above us now in the early evening (high targets help with the light pollution too although if you can get somewhere dark even better)

Only have ST80 Refactor but its great little telescope or 90 or 127 Mak a bit high on maginification and I can not work out focal reducer yet! I'm just working out controls on camera... Did you use 30seconds exposure and iso ? If I get the capture I will let you know :)

    Great vids, love the channel.
    A simple question. When using DSLR's. if you use a crop sensor, ie 1.6x. instead of a full frame. If the focal length of your scope is 500mm. Would this only apply to a full frame. ? and therefore a crop sensor would be 500mm x 1.6 = 800mm focal length ?
    I would appreciate your comment.
    Many thanks

    • @Astrobiscuit
      @Astrobiscuit  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi matt, as an astrophotographer my answer goes like this... The focal length is the distance it takes for light to focus to a point from the lens. A 500mm focal length scope will always be a 500mm scope. Field of view is what the camera actually sees in frame. So a 500mm scope combined with an apc sensor sized camera would have the same field of view as an 800mm focal length scope combined with a full frame camera.
