Imagine being some extraterrestrial space marine, devoting decades of your life to being a pilot in a fleet, only to report to your superior that some guy dodged all of your fire, circled you as closely as possible at supersonic speeds, and dipped.
I love how tame this tas is in the beginning followed shortly by the immediate jump from not moving at all to violently spazzing all over the screen. I bet this was hilariously fun to put together.
Oh shiiiiit this is an awesome HD up of that classic shit. I remember first seeing this run and totally tripping about it and was intro to TAS. We need more TAS like this with all the visually impressive tricks lol
Most TAS videos have this kind of trick when they have extra time, while some games just have no extra time for tricks. Since this one is an auto-scroller, you have a lot of free time to have extra fun!
Having played this game on nes, I can confirm this is the best build and strategy. I almost feel like I am watching a replay of my own playing. Circling and all.
The key to this TAS seems to gain enough speed that the Vic Viper could skip obstacles, "warping" between hitboxes... I guess this TAS can still be improved by a second or two, I don't know if the death was necessary.
It'd strongly recommend reading the publication notes on this one about the Death. Also this is a "Playaround" type run where entertainment is more important than purest speed else this would be an incredibly boring run to watch.
Of all the TAS videos, I always found this one the most baffling. There's no 'speedrunning' that's possible with this game since it's just an auto-scroller the whole way through, so it really just boils down to the runner killing time for 10 minutes. I mean, I'm not complaining, I just don't really see the point.
In Gradius V [Gradius 5] from PS2 In very Hard loop 255. It's impossible do this because is a lot shooting. Shooting everywhere. I think that ps2 no have this tools or tas system I guess anyway thumbs up for you

10% shooting, 90% frame-perfect choreography.
Ahhh good to see this classic get a re-encode~
Hard to read some of the words he writes by moving his ship around, one was "EAT AT JOES" though lol
4:13 He literally wrote his own name "adelikat"
4:36 "Eat at Joe's"

Can you imagine the rage the nes was feeling over this?
Feels like most flights I end up going on.

Catch all the fun references hidden in the TAS as adelikat had a lot of fun with this
Hi, I don't get the references, explenation pls?

It leads to a lot of fun when you go so fast!
It has to be necessary, there's no way he'd kill himself on purpose if it wasn't beneficial to the run

True that it is a play around TAS, but in the notes it says that the death does save some frames.
When the driver of the Vic Viper takes steroids... this happens.
Very fun tas xD
Does anyone know what causes the green faces at 2:25? That happened for the first time to me today on my game…. That’s why I’m watching videos now….

This would probably be better termed a tool-assisted run, or tool-assisted gameplay, but trivial pedantry aside, this was fun to watch.
i wonder if 100% kills possible...
I can only imagine the amount of vomit covering the interior of the Vic Viper cockpit

Not everything has to have a point. Sometimes people do things just because they can.
the only time saves that are possible is with the bosses
