Its really not a surprise to me. young cote du Rhone. are really good young. If you dit this tasting 3-5 year's from now, you would get a very diffrent outcome. 🍷
Interesting that the inexpensive Cotes du Rhone Blanc beat all of the other Rhone crus, including CDP. I have enjoyed CDR Blancs over the years. I think the best one was the E.Guigal 2013 CDR Blanc, but they certainly aren't common. Out in Asia this category is pretty rare, some specialist importers carry CDP Blanc, but it's not in high demand. I agree with your common that CDR Blancs are a good starting point for people that aren't crazy about or familiar with white wines. Though, I think other European countries do well with their oak aging practices. I'm finding more and more that Hungarian barrel fermented and/or aged whites do quite well, with more mid-palate weight and texture. But without too much vanilla or other strong flavors. And yes, the French generally get it spot on with their oaked whites. Cheers!
Just came back from Rioja, another region mainly known for their red (maybe even more so than Rhône?), where I tried a lot of whites. One standout was La Mateo, a very good wine made from Tempranillo blanco. Re white Rhône wines, I have a white Crozes-Hermitage since months waiting to be opened. Maybe time now in the coming days!
Lovely tasting. I’m a giant fan of white Rhône wines, have had a lot of them, varietals, blends, including a vin de pialle from Ermitage and the monopole Chateau-Grillet (was a gift🤯) stunning viognier. My favorite appellation, Saint Joseph. Fun to watch you taste through them.
I think old world white wine is underrated. Most people talk about Tuscany, Piemonte, Sicilia, Rioja, Bordeaux for their reds and skip out on whites. Like you showed, the whites in many regions can be fantastic and provide great value. I haven’t had much white Rhône wines, just one or two. Need to get some and take notes of them.
Great tasting from a region I adore, mainly for red wines. A lot of these southern Rhône whites are gastronomic wines. They shine with food. Not my type of wine for a glass late in the evening. For Northern Rhône try white Crozes Hermitage. A lot of choice, also from well known Rhône producers like Guigal and Vidal-Fleury.
I think for a lot of people don't try white Rhone's because they are not like chardonnay. I enjoy them because they are not chardonnays! I look forward to your Condrieu tasting!
Hey Matt! What do you think about a tasting between a particular varieties' spiritual home vs how the rest of the world makes it e.g. Condrieu vs Viogner from around the rest of the world? Cheers!

Muchas gracias!! You guys have gorgeous Garnacha Blanca tho
I don´t drink that much of these wine but I really love the white Donjon Chateuneuf. I´m drinking the 2010 now and it´s aged just so beautifully!
Stellar producer, both Blanc and Rouge
The CDR blancs age really well.
I love Yves Cuilleron’s Digue. Superb.
You gotta do a Condrieu tasting Matt.

@@drmatthewhorkey But it will ruin my focus on Italian wine. 🤣

Amazing wine and make me question my chardonnay mania 😂
Hahahah CdP whites can be exhilerating indeed
Indeed... way under appreciated white wines, hence some are great values, are from both Rhone Valley and Alsace !!!
Yesssahh
