i felt so self conscious because everyone around me can double tongue but i cant. I couldnt play da ga fast but this doo goo and this way of practicing it helped so much. thankyou!!!
Professor, I have taken up your voicing exercises and I can't thank you enough for them! I have reached up to the 6th partial overtone on Bb-Db and it's all thanks to you. I wanted to ask if you could PLEASE make a video on exercises that help with the smoothness of tonguing/articulation. That is to say, the attractiveness of legato tonguing, the speed and coordination between tongue and fingers, how to correctly staccato tongue, and any other exercises that overall can be used to help improve the tongue positioning for not just voicing a put articulation as well. Please and thank you in advance
I am going back to working on articulation rudiments. I'm an advanced jazz player but articulation is something I have badly overlooked. Doing the double tonguing clean and fast will take me some time as I'm just starting out seriously working on it. I've been working on speeding up my singly tonguing for a couple of months now and I've made amazing progress with that. Doing the double tonguing BACKWARDS with a goo-doo-goo-doo pattern never even occurred to me! Like I can't really do that at all. It boggles my mind and will work on that also. Thank you Robert.
It’s something like whip-cracking; when we flick the whip in forward, then in backward motion, we hear two cracks, although just one of them is from the forward motion. Similarly with double-tonguing; the forward stroke releases the air via the tongue tip at the reed tip. But the backstroke does not hit the reed with the tongue tip; the tongue is retreated back, and then it releases the air pressure from the throat. This backstroke is always softer.
@Keanan Hahahaha thanks! A lot has happened in 3 years. I ended up picking up bassoon and now I am a music ed major with bassoon as my primary instrument.
DEFINITELY going to apply this to Etude 30 by Ferling for All-Region (and hopefully All-State) auditions this year. Thanks so much for the great video!
I am still confused, does the tongue hit the reed twice. I have seen two other videos where the technique was tongue swipe up and get hen down, can someone please clarify
Hello, the tongue does not hit the reed twice. The technique that you are referring to is a separate technique. In my video, the tongue only hits the read on every other stroke....
I love at the end how you phrased having to learn double-tonguing, making it seem like a virtuous goal. Moreover, I'm wanting to learn this to help get into collage band having zero musical knowledge to make me seem more, I don't know, attractive as a member. Yeah, insecurity it be a thing. Anyway, the song I'm going to learn is Trumbology by Frank Trumbauer. The sheet music didn't seem that devilish, but the details might be in the tongue.
Hi Dr. Young, I have a huge tongue and always thought that it impedes my progress in tonguing and double tonguing since my tonguing is slow and is almost impossible to improve. I have asked some of my teachers and gotten mixed answers. What do you think? Does the size of your tongue affect the speed of tonguing or am I just naturally slow? If it does hinders my progress, what suggestions do you have to help overcome it?
Thanks for the awesome video! Totally unrelated to the content, but I was wondering what kind of harness that is? Do you find it really helps with the weight of your sax? I have problems with stress on my neck, and as a performance student on saxophone I'm really trying to find a way to relieve some of the neck stress. I've tried the Jazzlab saxholder, which I love for tenor or bari, but I don't care for it on Alto (my major instrument). Any advice would be appreciated!
Hello Kristian, yes this strap relieves the stress and tension on my neck. The strap is called "Breathtaking". The saxophone feels incredibly light with this strap!
Awesome video! Thanks for the tips, Dr. Young! Do you have any tips for double tonging in the upper register? I tend to start scooping the rebound once I reach high B.
Thanks, Mark! Im glad it was helpful! Absolutely, I am planning to make a Part 2 of this video this week. Double tonguing in the upper register is quite problematic for a lot of people. If your rebound stroke is too far forward in your mouth then you will scoop a lot. Try moving your rebound further back in your mouth once you get up there. Try puffing your cheeks out while you double tongue...you may notice that you can immediately double tongue much higher on the instrument. This is because when you puff your cheeks your rebound stroke is not striking in the same spot as if you were not puffing. If puffing works for you, then the trick is to try to create that same motion when you are not puffing your cheeks out. Let me know if this helps!
I'm trying to learn double tonguing because of a passage in the Carmen Fantaisie.... Right at the end od the piece it alternates between the top E and D and they're double tongued. But I'm struggling....
Hey, even though I have been playing the saxophone for about 9 years, I have never really learned to double tongue. If I really start practicing, starting with the syllables (which goo is harder to say than I thought!),do you know how long will it be until I have the technique somewhat solid?
It all depends. I think the best answer I can give is to try to designate some time for double tongue practice everyday. If you are consistent with practicing it you will get it in no time!
What Mouthpiece are you playing on, I'm asking this because, my Selmer Series 3 is lacking a good mouth piece, i fill like selling it off. Please what can do to fix this. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
How are you biting your tongue? The second attack has the part of the tongue behind the tip rising to the spot in the mouth cavity where the soft palate rises up from the hard portion (behind the upper teeth). Try saying the word ‘gullah’ with your lips almost sealed; the tongue almost closes off the entire cavity. When the tongue moves down the air is released for the 2nd attack.
Hello. Thank you for your comment. Unless you are unable to say goo, the middle of your tongue should be making contact with the top of your mouth to get the "G" sound. This is what I am referring to as the "backstroke". Hope this makes sense!
Hello everyone! If you would like a more in-depth and advanced double tongue tutorial check out this video!: th-cam.com/video/pF6owBKURDg/w-d-xo.html

well I can't even say googoogoogoogoogoo smoothly so that is'nt a good start
Dave Longcake As you practice your mouth will develop the muscles and it will become easier. Just like working out.
Thats fine, my tongue is almost frozen and I’m only ten
@@lisali9824 . Start off REALLY slowly, 10 minutes/day for months - you'll be a monster eventually!
Thanks for this! I just started playing saxophone last year, so I needed this.

I remember you from smart music! I switched from alto to baritone because of it!
You're the best, Dr. Young!
Awesome Dr. Young! Great Class! You're a really doctor! Congrats from Brazil!
Thank you! I am glad that you enjoyed it!

Muitíssimo obrigado professor! Parabéns pelo belo trabalho! Uma aula muito clara e didática!
Muito obrigado!

Thanks you for that lesson. I can now impress some many people.

You are a very goog teacher. Thank you.
Very didactic presentation. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for your knowledge sir,
It's so importan
The song that I'm trying to learn is so fast I can barely speak it like he instructs

I was there when he taught a saxophone masterclass at the saxophone symposium
Cara se tiver como colocar Legendas em Português, seria excelente. 🇧🇷

How long did it take you to become comfortable with double tonguing?
Awesome video! Thanks for the tips, Dr. Young! Do you have any tips for double tonging in the upper register? I tend to start scooping the rebound once I reach high B.

Wow! That was a quick response. Ha! I'll try this out and let you know. Thank you!
Great lesson. Thank you!
Saxologist thanks!
Really helpful. Thanks!
Do the same principles apply for bari sax?
Adam Rozman absolutely!
oh my god its the dude from "How to play the Tenor Sax"
what is the neck strap brand? looks cool
we in România(banat) in general use the L-R-L-R and there is absolute no diference between notes
Very nice❤ thank you

Glad it helped!
thanks for the tips, do you teach online?
David Mcclam thank you. I could teach on Skype. It all depends on the situation though.
My double tongue is very uneven and sometime the back stroke just barely sounds like an articulation. How do I go about fixing this??
Wow.... Vary helpful sir
So useful! :D
why does your cheek move when you play the doo and goo
Great vid man
ok, I've learned that technique and it works as you say, but I don't like the different sound between the doo and goo tonguing.
Excellent 👍😎🎷 thanks
Nice video ! thank you
THANK U VERY MUCH SIR 🙏
Hi, Whenever I do the 'googoo' on the saxophone, my tongue doesn't actually touch the reed. Am I doing it wrong?
Hi, it actually should not touch the reed. "goo" is your backstroke. It should not touch your reed - it should touch the top of your mouth.
Damn, then it is more difficult than I expected. Thank you !
awesome video
kurikokaleidoscope thank you!
What is the name of the piece playing in the intro?
Ghiam Mena I know this is an comment but it’s not a piece. He’s just tonguing on one note and then playing a scale up.
Which saxophone model sir?
Selmer Series III (Jubilee)
What Mouthpiece are you playing on, I'm asking this because, my Selmer Series 3 is lacking a good mouth piece, i fill like selling it off. Please what can do to fix this. Hope to hear from you soon. Thank you.
Hello Jesuseun. I play on a Selmer S90-190.
@Dr Robert Young, thanks so much.
What is the intro music?!?! I love it!!!
Its called Gradient. You can check out the full recording on my album "Hybrid"...available on my website robertyoungsaxophone.com
Why is the goo harder to do?
how come your sax doesn't sound jazzy.
Thanks!🙂
hi can you tell me about your strap i want to bay it thank you
It relieves the stress and tension on my neck. The strap is called "Breathtaking". The saxophone feels incredibly light with this strap!
is the tongue touch reed? my tongue's hurt when i practise this, can you help me
Trung Hoàng Anh yes, the tip of your tongue should touch the reed. He tongues should touch he roof of your mouth for the "back stroke"
thank u so much, i'll keep practise :D your youtube channel is so awesome :D
Trying to learn Ferling #8 lol
I’m crying because I cannot do this
Keep at it! You will get it, it takes some time! Let me know if you need any help

Thank you! Thanks for watching!
Well the thing is I don’t even use my tongue when saying “goo”...

Okay I guess it does - I had to actually stick my finger in my mouth to see but now I know. Thanks!
