Alyabyev was not only a romances' writer ('Nightingale' is the most famous) but a retired colonel (a Hero of war against Napoleon's troops and their satellites) and a master of instrumental and choral music.
But in 1825 he was charged with murder of his card partner. The charge was never proven, but Alyabyev was exiled to the province. Until the end of his life, he was forbidden to live in Petersburg.

There is a record of this composition of Emil Gilels and Beethoven Quartet's members. In late Stalin time, there was a big interest to the old Russian art (the struggle against cosmopolites). The authorities wanted to prove that Russian art was of a world class even before Glinka, so, many performers were ordered to prove it. Some biographies of old composers were written at that time also. The country that just had won the war, should prove it had a right to do that, especially for its own population.

The first movement actually reminds me of the Schumann piano concerto

It's a beautiful piece of music but today's musicians won't play it because it's a piano sonata with violin and cello accompaniment. The piano part is highly virtuosic, string parts are for children therefore they don't present a challenge for a moder day string player.

Even so, it would be worth anybody's while to pay it - could become popular, if only they played it.
