Thanks for providing the history behind the Legend of Sunshine Shoulders. I’ve followed Philippines expat vloggers for about 10 years and your channel for over 3 years. What makes your channel great is that you are an independent thinker, tell it the way you see it, don’t sugar coat anything, give back to the people, and somehow manage to come up with new ideas.

Just seen a video with a wedding in CDO and they are required to have a police presence when there is a large gathering of foreigners. Says a lot imho. Have no interest in going to Mindanao to visit. Glad you made it out of there. Thank you for sharing, did not know this about you as have only recently subscribed.
    Thank you, Calvin...Jim

Probably the police presence because of the large gathering of foreigners at parties was because the foreigners would fight each other after they got drunk and the police were there to break them up..hehe..nothing worse than a drunk old man with a young girlfriend whose ego is completely out of control and then he gets drunk on top of that..hehe

My wife is from Zamboanga City and I have spent several weeks there during two visits. No problems, but just like anywhere, one must remain aware. I too did not know it was a red zone until I was watching one of your videos and you stated such.

hey sunshine shoulders i was living deep in the province of Zamboanga city in the squatter area. I will take the jeepney from the barangay to Pueblo(Zamboanga City) and I will get home around 7:30pm due to traffic and sometimes i will be the only person in the jeepney getting home at night. My neighbor was a white guy from Switzerland, and occasionally I will see other white guy foreigners visiting their wife's families in the squatter area. What I observed in the Muslim squatter area was that the people are friendly and Muslims and Christians will drink alcohol together behind close doors and will gamble together in rooster cock fights. I will also see military people on the entrance of the barangay. I did not know that Zamboanga City was a red zone when i was their.

He was getting actual warnings though they were planning to kidnap and people were coming by the house and warning his family. He should have got out now. I don't know his situation. Maybe he couldn't afford to get out but he should have got out. He should have left town or at least gone into the city. He might have been safe. He might have been fine or different Island or other side of the island. He should have done something. But would have. Should have could have all that's in the past now. He paid the ultimate price.

I should clarify. My girlfriend in the Philippines has no problem with Muslims either. She's very accepting of all people but she does understand the risks and she does know that some of them are extremists. A minority for sure, but it only takes one to mess your day up. The other thing is she speaks the language very very well. I understand a little bit but she speaks Cebuano I come out of an encounter with some people that I thought were friendly. We were having a good conversation and then she tells me the other side of the story the things that I missed due to the language barrier. Of course they think we're wealthy no matter what, even if we're not which I am not. So their perspective of us is a risk. They see foreigners they see money they see opportunity. And quite frankly, the majority of the foreigners that go to the Philippines don't have money. It's one of the reasons why we're there because it's affordable.

I have been watching you since you started.. I always loved watching the TH-camrs that are in the areas of the Philippines were the people are living like most of the Filipinos live.. you were in the area like my Filipino wife and her parents were living on their vegetable farm in the mountains on Cebu Island about 3 hours south of Cebu City.. my wife grew up without running water, no bathroom, no refrigerator or TV and one light bulb from the power of an old telephone line that somebody had ran in their house in the mountains.. no road to the house so they have to carry in drinking water from the road to the mountain where they were living.. they would catch rainwater in barrels and when I first met her I bought several more barrels so they would never run out of rainwater to wash and cook with.. of course I ran a electrical service power line over 500 meters and I had to pay the expense for the wire and poles and the electrician to run it and correctly hook it to the pole and the house.. I bought a refrigerator and a microwave and a rice cooker a TV and a karaoke machine some beds and mattresses and many other things to make their life better.. they were sleeping on Mats they would roll out at night.. also bought a gas cooker so they would not have to go outside and cook in the rain.. when the hurricane hit the Cebu Island I paid for a roof and other repairs to their house.. I also paid for the repairs to a couple of her sisters houses and also a couple of their neighbors houses.. I have plenty of extra money and I enjoy spending it where I can see the results rather than giving it to a charity that has a 80 or 90% operational right rate and only 5 or 10% goes to the people.. I got to see the results of my charitable money in videos and many thanks from many deserving honest hard working poor people.. I still help when I see the need.. at the end of your videos everything you say is 100% true.. if everybody that could would just help one person in this world everyday the world would improve 100% overnight..I also love the saying, "boots on the ground"..👍👍🍺🍻🏝️🏖️👙👙😁👍🇺🇸

Yeah. Elliott Eastman has been a sort of hiccup in my plans. I wanted to visit Zamboanga City. I really did and I still do. The strange thing about Elliot Eastman is he lives in Vermont, USA. Very close to me or did live now he's deceased. Due to some poor decisions on his part. As it turns out and I just learned this this morning from people that know his family. Personally, his dad's an electrician and his mother who he never mentions in any of his videos is a drunk. He also was known here apparently as a drug dealer when he was younger. I don't know what that means. It could be something as simple as marijuana which was illegal not long ago. But in any case, living outside the law. I expect maybe he was doing the same there as he was conducting some business which is not legal for a foreigner. Without lots of paperwork. And only if you provide jobs for Filipinos. This story struck me very very hard because my time in the Philippines every 6 months is in Mindanao. I'm very curious about your insights on Zamboanga. I know you have said before that it is not a dangerous place to visit.

You know I think his problem probably was due to him marrying a Muslim woman. It appears as though her family did not have any opposition to it and she didn't have any opposition to it. But others that were witnesses of that didn't like it. And perhaps her being on a video without her head covering on when they were swimming or in the privacy of their own home that was all released on TH-cam that could have been very offensive to Muslim people. I think most of them are fine. But there are extremists out there and that can be dangerous. You don't know who is who. My lady who lives in Davao City. That's where I spend the majority of my time in the Philippines. She says don't trust any Muslim. She does not dislike Muslims in any way, but she sees the dangers. Even the mountains, just south of Davao City are known to have Taliban. It's not that far away but there are places they say. Oh you can go here. Don't go there. You got to be careful. He was producing and releasing TH-cam videos that showed exactly where he lived and talked a little bit about his life and his marriage to his wife and other things that maybe rub some people the wrong way. I'm not saying that that part of his life was inappropriate, but you have to respect the local culture. You have to respect what they view as acceptable. And not be offensive to them
