    The standout one for me was the famous Firesong and Sunspeaker episode. Where Josh has Aetherflux Reservoir ONLINE and is storming off on his turn everytime. And the guest drops an Erebos, which stops lifegain. AND JOSH DOESNT IMMEDIATELY MURDER THEIR FACE HOLE. Erebos is the one thing that would prevent the death star from taking over the game while it's out, so the logical option is to murder it's controller, preferably while it's on the stack so you can continue to go off.
    I guess he didn't do this because it's kinda mean for someone's first guest appearance, but I feel like that was the one that stands out to me consistently.

    • @davidmartinez1260
      @davidmartinez1260 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sheldon Chambers I remember thinking that same thing in that episode, but Josh had made a table agreement that he would only Aetherflux Reservoir the person who attempted to hit him under 65 life. That was just a good play by her to keep Josh under control while getting around the agreement.

    [Game Knights #23 DJ Utter End + Planar Bridge] I think there is another line of play not discussed that deals with BOTH, even if he still wants to target the hydra. And that is, DJ saying to the table:
    "So I don't like the hydra hitting me every turn, but the planar bridge is just too big of a threat. Jimmy, can you let me deal with the hydra threat instead of destroying your planar bridge, by not hurting me with whatever you get from Planar Bridge?"
    EVEN IF DJ was secretly 100% committed to killing the hydra regardless, presenting that deal creates the chance Jimmy doesn't use the bridge against him and that DJ has now basically dealt with BOTH threats

    *Can you tell the Devs of MTG Arena to implement a match replay/recap function?*
    I've noticed that I've made some wrong decisions (mainly due to my lack of threat assessment),
    I'm familiar with mechanics since Kaladesh, but I've neglected to build too many of my own decks,
    My knowledge of specific cards, and their "value" is minimal at best.
    I do think that...analyzing game play will help improve deck building, and in turn potentially improve decision making.
    But without the ability to record or review matches, whether digital or physical, reduces max potential of improving with MTG (and other strategies).
    Great video; Perfect timing(for me);
    Thank you all at The Command Zone for producing content! ♥

    What I find very interesting is searching for the moment the game was won. It's not always the actual card ending the game sometimes its a previous spell not being countered from 2 turns ago, a deal being made with another player or even one misplaced removal, etc. It helps your future treat assessment.

    Something big that wasn't covered in this was when Josh in the first brawl episode was basically holding the table hostage with rivers rebuke. I get that anyone who had their board bounced was basically guaranteed to lose but what no one seemed to consider was if they didn't do anything to Josh they were still going to lose. In a situation like that I think the best strategy is to get the whole rest of the table to agree to make that person the arch enemy.

    A note about the end discussion involving 3rd/4th place players being "forced" into using their removal spells/other resources to stave off the biggest threats due to seating etc.: Scenarios like this just show, to me, why instant speed interaction is so important. If their interaction can be played on the problem player's turn, they can sand bag their removal until the problem is pointed at them, and then use it only when they have to.

    I feel the biggest mistake that should have been answered was back in Episode #21, The Guilds of Ravnica episode. After the massive stack play, where Elesh Norn was played, and Adam Savidan played Dictate of Erbos. Now it’s been on my mind, but why didn’t Adam sacrifice the zombie to Yahenni before the Dictate resolves so that Elesh Norn would have lived, killing Josh’s bored when he phased back in. From what us the viewers saw that would have been the play I believe.

    The first time y’all did this was my favorite command zone episode. I have a mono-white Kytheon Gideon tribal deck. Miraculously I’ve never had a problem with slow starts but my table group knowing that didn’t let me keep a creature on board, but I got a boat load of cool enchantments. (they’re only relevant in the endgame) Early game, the Edgar markov deck at the table went to swing at me. I was holding up a swords to plow shares for the mindslicer at the table, but out of spite exiled markov. I ended up winning with Cathars Crusade and deploy to the front but it caused a loud argument at the table at the time. I probably would be regretting it if I didn’t leverage the fact I was mono white

    Someone in my playgroup made a huge mistake against my deck once. So I was playing a Locust God draw ramp deck which is very powerful. All of our board states were equal and there was a board wipe confusion, (he actually had two in his hand that had to do with creatures). So he plays the one that destroys all creatures instead of exiles. One line on the locust God is whenever it dies, it may come back to my hand. So taking out the 4 mana from commander cost, I was able to play that and another one of my combo pieces and win the game on that turn. If he was paying attention to my cards and my combo, and played the exile creatures, he would have won on his next turn as the life totals were 10, 7, 18, and 6.

    12:50 the easy fix to that whole situation to put aside speculation is to just sacrifice your Xenagos to the Altar of Dementia once he targeted it with mirage mirror...even if you weren't sure what he was going to do with it, it was obviously his only out. That removes everything about who should I have killed or what not. Sacrifice Xenagos there and he did not have enough to mill you out.

    The whole "pointless fued" topic is actually a bit more valid than people realize. When you establish yourself as a "dont mess with my stuff" sort of player, you cue people in on the fact that you are reactionary. That when you say you have something, and will do something, that you'll do the thing. Nothing more satisfying than a Spike player complaining because they removed your thing, and you removed some thing of theirs back. "They have (thing) why wouldn't you use that on (thing)?!" A. don't touch my stuff......B. You LITERALLY just removed some thing of mine, you had the option to remove (thing) yourself, don't just bitch that your "master plan" of "ha HA I'm gonna remove HIS thing and then he HAS to remove the OTHER player's thing since IT is the THREAT!!" didn't work.

    The episode with Nerdgirl I don't think Amaz was too mean, he got the win. But I think it looked way worse because she helped out a few times not lose, and you guys had a bit of a vendetta against each other. There was definitely a line in that game where Jimmy should have Mindslaved Amaz, smashed his stuff into Josh, after Jimmy had already set Josh back a bit with the first Mindslaver usage. OR used Josh's stuff against Amaz instead of saccing it. I think that's the bigger misplay in that episode rather than Amaz being mean, or Jimmy Necropotence for 25. Without going back and watching that (rough) game, but I remember thinking "why do this instead of x" regarding the mindslaver.

  • @puffin-onehandedgamer1164

    52:48 I don't mind what Amaz did, he was just using his commander to his full potential. sure, maybe it was mean, but I don't mind stuff like that. The only playstyle I mind is someone playing stacks that takes 50 turns to win, that is my only gripe. that is where I draw the line. Infect is ok, destroying everything is ok, so long as you win quickly. but destroying everything or locking the game down and taking 20 turns from then on to win is not ok in my book. I will sorcery speed scoop if you do that.
    I have made massive mistakes that cost me the game. at one time, I was playing Locust god and I just need 1 more creature to win and I forgot locust god as an ability on him that lets me draw a card and get a locust. I saw that afterwards and was like "oh no!". I so rarely use that ability on him that I forgot about it. if I had that one creature I would have won the game. another time, I play out a Fiendish duo (gives everything that's not hitting me double strike) and right after, someone plays a corrupted consience on it, suddenly they have a 5/5 doublestriker with infect and I have nothing, suffice to say I died the next turn. I wouldn't say that was a misplay, it was a politics card, everyone did double damage so long as they weren't hitting me, but I ended up handing the other player the win.

      Completely agree. Beating a dead horse is not something to do to a friend. If they want to play it out because they think they can win, that's their decision. But "making" them sit there while you are the only one playing is bad social manners. Borderline bullying.

    Personal Anecdote
    I was playing Edgar Markov against a Mono Blue deck and an atraxa super friends. Atraxa had 4 planeswalkers, all close to ult. I had no board to speak of, but a Merciless Eviction top deck. The blue player had a single planeswalker and a load of artifact ramp, and open mana. I knew he had a counterspell. So I decided to be open, and asked if he'd let me resolve merciless eviction to stop atraxa from ulting next turn. He said no. I was baffled. I laid out my case that I was going to cast this card regardless, so he had two options. Either he counters it, we both go down a card, saves his Teferi (commander) and let's atraxa do their thing, or he allows it, keeps his counterspell for later, suffers virtually no damage as he can recast teferi that turn, and neuters atraxa. He still said no. I was absolutely sure he was just being obstinate and making a bad play. Still not quite believing he was serious, I cast eviction, and he counters it. "Alright, then we both lose." Next turn atraxa drops doubling season and another walker, ults everything and we lose. I confronted him after, and he revealed that he was holding isochron scepter and summary dismissal. But he didnt have the mana for the dismissal after countering my eviction. But he had to counter the eviction to have enough mana to combo off next turn with teferi, his artifacts, a tutor and dramatic scepter. So he wasn't being an idiot. I had just put him into a position from which he couldn't win.

    No no no. It's not about what Amaz did. It is about the *WHOLE* game. During the whole game she was barely able to to play anything. The fact of why it felt mean is not because of what Amaz did to her, it is because of what he did to her CONSIDERING the rest of the game. Basically she was unable to play or make her deck shine. An episode I wish you guys discussed was the episode with Jacob and Evelynn, and the massive "potential " mistakes in it. Would have been a good discussion on the politics ( was Evelynn right to take those deals with Jacob/was he right to offer them? ), along with "was it a missplay to not remove some of her ramp ".
    Personally I feel Evelynn was in the right to take the deals, but Jacob was missplaying by offering most of them.

    I might be wrong but I think the whole Mammoth situation is different. Chittering Witch is on the board and I believe the three yellow tokens represent rats. If Jimmy blocks with a 1/1, the Mammoth has 5 toughness remaining. Prior to playing a creature, or while holding priority, Reid could throw a rat at the Formation to shrink it for the fight.
    If this is true, isn’t the best line to make three tokens and only have them block the Mammoth? If Jimmy makes three tokens and block all against the Mammoth, Reid will just throw the three rat activations at the Formation (or depending on what he wants out of the turn, accepts the trade). If he throws three tokens only at the Mammoth, that means Reid would have to sink two activations into the Formation before another creature triggers the fight. In this latter scenario, there is the possibility that he won’t want to sink that many resources into the Formation and leave it for another turn.

    I'm really digging the first two examples here. I think it highlights a political concept that most Commander players coming from 1v1 play suffer from.
    DO NOT take out a player unless they aren't useful to you anymore.
    Weight up how dangerous they are to you, and how dangerous they are to your opponents.
    You really only want to be messing with them if there is something they have going that makes them a threat to you, but not the rest of the table.
    There are ALWAYS deals available if you have the ability to kill someone, following through on that only removes that political potential AND commits your own resources. It's a last ditch effort that you don't want to be playing for unless that line ends in you winning the game.

      Sure would be! I think Tolarian has a video on it... I've seen it in some video I'm sure. I have some tips for you in the mean time that I've learned the hard way.
      If you have green in your deck, never keep a hand that doesn't have at least one green mana cuz chances are most of your ramp is green. (This tripped me up when playing triple coloured at first)
      You want to keep a hand you can play. The mana you keep should match the mana costs in your hand. Even if that means keeping two white lands in an esper deck.
      Make sure you can play at least two cards. Or keep a hand that has at least one ramp spell and MAKE SURE you already have the mana to play it.
      Never trust that you will draw into the thing you need to make your hand work. You don't want to sit out four turns on that hope. If it doesn't work out after that's chance but keeping a hand that doesn't work is a choice.

    A mistake my play group makes a lot is not assessing threats going in to the game. There is one guy in my play group that likes to build things on the 9-10 power level, and the rest of us play like 6-8 power level decks. Most of the time when we get into the game with this player I tend to be the only one dealing with his threats, and this leads to him winning 90% of the games we play unless I am playing my Grand Arbitor IV deck (which everyone hates so I play that as a last resort). So basically, my play group needs to focus him a little more.

      Nah, I'll disagree. Watch that episode again from at least 45 to the end. Just watch her do absolutely nothing with her deck. It's a tokens deck. You can see the decklist online. It's a fairly weak deck. It doesn't really have a ton of things to do where it could explode. She doesn't have things that could deal with his board state. I mean, I guess there are some board wipes there, Hour of Reckoning is a 7mana 4WWW board wipe, Austere Command doesn't kill everything, and it's 4WW. It looks like it'd be a fun deck in certain situations with a certain playground, but not with this group. He easily could have just attacked her and won without being a giant ham.

    In my opinion, a mistake is where you accidentally break the rules. Like an easy one that doesn't really have a of of consequences, is forgetting to untap your permanents before you draw, its a mistake, but it doesn't really matter in the end.
    All the arguments that are being made here isn't that these moves were 'mistakes', but that there were more optimal moves that could have been done that could have put the person in a better position.
    In a format like commander, I don't think you should always be making the most optimal moves. if an opponent is behind on lands and I draw a terrastodon, if I destroy 3 of their lands, they are basically out of the game, which would be an optimal move because I removed an opponent. But that isn't very fun to play against, and I am ruining that persons game. (I'm just using an example) which isn't very fun to play against.

    • @sulaimanhyatt-butt1453
      @sulaimanhyatt-butt1453 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You kinda do make the soft point that "this is the optimal play because it removes an opponent" as a means to support the conclusion that you "sometimes dont make the optimal play for the sake of fun" but it buys into this philosophy that "knocking someone out is ALWAYS the optimal play to win" which is PATENTLY false in multiplayer. I get the ultimate conclusion, sometimes you need to make the altruistic play for the sake of the game, but then the example was "meh..."
