I think you would love the Chiagoo LACE needles. They have no bend and are sharper. It sounds to me like the Hiya Hiya needle with the Chiagoo cord, best of both worlds! This is a great video. Very informative.
LIFE IS TO SHORT TO USE NEEDLES THAT DONT MAKE YOU HAPPY!! I have repeated this many times on various podcasts where chiaogoo is mentioned but I feel I must tell you all once again.. ChiaoGoo are LIFETIME WARRANTY people!!! They are all I use. I have tried the rest with disappointing results for one reason or another. I have been knitting for over 40 years and I stopped wasting my money on needles that didn't make me happy years ago. If you like the sharps maybe the interchangeable tips would fit ChiaoGoo cables. Just a thought. 🤔🤔🤔
This was an extremely helpful video as I am currently shopping for needles to make socks and doll sweaters. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into the research! 😊🌹
Chiaogoo ROCK! I just started knitting about two months ago, I am in love with Chiaogoo! Waiting to save up for the interchangeables, I have fixed circulars in two sizes 8 and 7, I am knitting hats right now. I knit socks on a Cindwood looms.
You're so clever!!! Thank you for doing all the hard work for me, comparing all the needles! 🌹 I hope one day learn to knit socks, I'm just a beginner but I'm really enjoying knitting 😊
very good needle review, I have decided that chiaogoos are my go-to needles as well and this confirmed it for me so I don't have to waste anymore money, I have a bunch of needles I don't use anymore including addi-clicks because of the cables. Yes, I have done the hot water trick!
Thank you so much! The carbons do provide more friction between yarn and needle, some people like their dpns for that reason, but I did not find them easy to work with either, I put them into category as possible sub for wood needles but with more strength.
I started out doing socks Magic Loop, at the time I had either metal or bamboo needles, but hated the nylon cords which would not uncoil very well. I'd take and use the steam from my tea kettle to make the cords relax and that worked. But must say, I got a stem burn or two and I touched the cord into the spout and a part of the cord had a melted place which made the yarn stick to it. I love ChiaGoo and have several sets of them as I like knitting socks on the 9" or 10" sock needles and have the ChiaoGoo mini interchangeable lace needles in the little zip red kit. Love them. They aren't good for doing sock toes unless they are assembled to form Flexi-Flips. I have the set of 2" cords but find those are so short and then have bought extra tips to use them. I don't mind doing DPNs for decreasing for the toe. I do top down socks though I have done a couple toe up. So I like the stretchiness of either the crocheted cast-on or the standard long-tail slingshot method. The bind off for stretchy sock ribbing is not attractive to me so I have stopped making them. I began knitting socks in my 60s and I did so a part of my arthritis rehabilitation to regain strength and flexibility in my fingers. It has really helped and no longer take any pain killers but I gave up dairy and all meats, poultry and fish. I had arthritis every joint of my body and was in a wheelchair 1/3 of my life. I relearned how to cook and we eat rather tasty food, it just has been a blessing to not be handicapped. Helped my husband too as he is post cancer. I did try to knit some knitting worsted on my smallest size Knitter's Pride bamboo set and broke some needles. I replaced them with stainless steel. I do LOVE all my ChiaGoo needles. I do have some Hiya Hiya circulars and though I like them, wow do my finger tip get sore. The ChiaGoos are sharp enough for me even for knitting lace but don't make my fingers sore as much and the red cords are my favorites. My Knitter's Pride set has chords similar to KnitPicks as supplies for both interchangeable sets work together. I have not tried their fixe circulars. The Knitter' Pride are a good set but I've really worn down the tips of the bamboo set so getting the ChiaoGoos was great. I prefer the two-circular method to the Magic Loop as sliding the long loop, I feel slows my knitting down. With my interchangeables, I can make whatever size I need as I can knit with the gauge needle and have one two sized smaller on the other end. This actually makes my stitches move on the needles best as I do knit tighter than other people. I used to knit English and though I do Flicking, I now knit Continental as I find it faster but if my hands get tired I go to Flicking. Works for me. I can also assemble a third needle to make Flexi-Flips but the cord in the middle is longer. I don't mind, it works and like it better than my bamboo DPNs as I can't tell you how often I have lost a needle. Now been knitting baby booties, socks and hats for our new twin grandsons and the interchangeable kits have been great for knitting the cuffs on booties in the round and not on DPNs or having a seam. Keeps my mind active. Your hand died yarn on your socks is so pretty. Loved your review.
I just started knitting socks again after a long break from it. I watched some videos and bought a pair of ChiaoGoo Lace size US 1. I poked my finger innumerable times until I changed my method and also formed a callous. But, I do LOVE how silky they are. The yarn has just enough friction on them to stay on the needles, but not enough that you'd call it drag. I decided that I'd like them in a 2, 2.5, 3 and 7 (for worsted weight yarn), so I bought those from Amazon. I'm really happy with them. The ones that I have (ChiaoGoo Lace) do not have the bend down where the cable attaches. They make my sock knitting go smoothly, and they make me happy. What else could I ask for?
What a great video. I ordered the chiagoo needles. My last pair of socks knitted over 10 years ago. Struggled with it, but confident I can do it better now. Magic Loop and 2 socks at a time. More options to check out and learn. Beginner sock girl.
I have the Chiagoo interchangeable sock needles and the cords are easy to work with because it skinnier making it more flexible. It is easy to do magic loop. I also have the addi needles 8 inch and Chiagoo needles 9 inch which I love both.
I started with knitters pride interchangeables and quickly moved to hiya hiya after the needles kept unscrewing themselves. I bought chiaogoo interchangeables and sock needles in April of 2020 and they've become my favorites due to the cable
Have you tried the chiaogoo twist shorties? I like 9" circular needles for socks and love that I can now knit sleeves and cuffs on a circular and keep using the same size needle vs having to go up a needle size because my magic loop tension is tighter than circular needle tension.
Thanks for a great video! I tried to buy the Chiagoo, 47 in. Size 1.5 off amazon and they didn’t have that size. Had to buy Hyia hyia. I have the chiagoo interchangeables and I love them! I did my first pair of two at a time toe up recently. It was a bit of a struggle but I did get quite a bit better as I went. It’s a learning curve for sure!
I've had some interchangeable Knitter's Pride break on me experimenting on knitting socks, but it was my own fault. I was learning to knit socks and didn't want to go out and buy sock yarn so was forcing knitting worsted acrylic Red Heart to knit on size 2.5 and 3. These each I had one needle snap. I realized it was my fault but ordered the Knitter's Pride Platina in these sizes to replace the smallest needles as they won't snap. Otherwise I really love knitting with bamboo. And Knitter's Pride kits I love, also have their Tunisian crochet hooks. Love both sets. I too have found Magic Loop works best for me on knitting socks. I have larger hands than many women and I tried a Clover Takumi 9" fixed circ in a US size 2 (2.75 mm) and just found whether I knit English method Flicking or Continental, that I just could not find a way to use my piano playing hands on these needles. I can play 2 notes past an octave on the piano which is not as far as men can reach but it shows how wide my hands are. I don't have a tight grip, my tension is even but my hands cramping is no fun and found these were much slower than even doing double points in a 5 needle set. Fastest for me is the Magic Loop method. I might try an Addi which has a longer needle on one end for sock knitters who need more grip space as the Clover Takumi tips are equally short. Japanese people being more petite than those with Norse blood like me, just going to exchange them for some double points which I use on the toes and working a pattern I have in a book from Patons for top down with a heel flap as I have a high instep. I do have some Hiya Hiyas and ChiaGoo Red Lace needles when I had caught the Lace Bug. Enough with shawls, I do wear socks a lot. But the ChiaGoo are very nice needles but I have recovered from arthritis and my hands just feel best with bamboo it seems as I will likely have some residual stiffness due to my age. Found your video very informative and thank you for the comparisons.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and input!! It really is individual and I’m so glad there are so many options available to make knitting accessible and enjoyable for everyone!!
I prefer the Chiagoo needles over all. A few years ago I invested in a set of Karbonz interchangable needles and a set of DPN Karbonz, but after a year of using the Karbonz consistintly, they actually started to wear thin, and would catch on the yarn near the metal point. The company did replace size 7 and 8 of the interchangable Karbonz, but hesitantly, even though there was a guarantee on the needles. They are now on the bottom of my list of needles to use.
Thank you very good review. I had thought about buying the Lykke because they look so pretty but wont now. I usually use Chiagoo, theyre super slick and fast and with excellent cable. I have mostly Chiagoos with the 'shoulder' but also a straight lace pair which are super sharp. Due to thumb problems I've started using Addi Crasytrio in bamboo, which I love. I believe theyre called Addi Flips outside of Europe? How about a review comparing dpns and the Crasytrios?

You haven't tried Addi Sock Rockets with the lace tips and super flexi cord ....THE BEST ! Super flexi for magic loop and the lace point nickel plated needle are SO fast !!!!
Nice podcast! I haven't tried the Lykke, but I have tried all the rest, and I completely agree. I even tried the super expensive Signature Arts Needle, and didn't care for the join and the cable isn't very flexible -- nice tips though. I do like Addi's as well. Some people say knitting needles are like brassieres - very personal to your taste. Well done!
The Chiagoo needles are my favorite. I've also used Addi sock rockets. I like the Addi needles, but the cord is a little less flexible than I'd like. For me, the problems with the HiyaHiya (and Signature Stilettos) are two-fold: the super-sharp tips do tend to split the stitches, and I have actually pricked through the skin on my index finger when pushing the needle through the stitch. As far as birch needles are concerned, I have birch DPN's and I use 2.75mm for socks. Even at that size, they still bend quite a bit, which makes me nervous that I will break one. I've knit one pair of socks with the 9" circulars, but I think magic loop is easier.
The Chiagoo Lace, I think, are better than the Chiagoo Stainless. I also don’t like the bend in the Chiagoo stainless, I like the straight needle. Love the cable in all the Chiagoo’s
Totally agree from your top to bottom ranking. Carbonz joins are unacceptable or is it just us? No, there is a frustrating catch between metal and carbon fiber sections. Your number two ranked needle, the cord has better memory than I do. Your number one is also my first choice. Just saying, “not just your choice”.
This video has been so helpful in helping me decide what to plan on buying next. I have just learned to knit in the past few months and I have the inexpensive carbonized bamboo knitting needles (I recognized you from the video you did on the ones you bought!) Anyway..they are decent enough for my beginning but since I now am knitting socks now (working on my second pair..yay!) I know I want better needles and I'm ready to try another style. Thanks so much for all the effort and time you put into this video. Subscribed!!! :)
hiya hiya needles also come with a blunt tip (i have both sharp and regular sets) and chiaogoo needles come also straight, with no bend in the metal part. on a side note, you should give Addi turbo lace needles a try. they have the smoothest join among all the other brands and cords don't kink up as much as hiya hiya's cables do
For sock knitting it is better to use ChiaoGoo twist needles. The needle which you have is ChiaoGoo red lace. It is not for socks. Of course you can use them for socks. They have sock set too. ChiaoGoo Twist needles have no bended corner on the needles and they are little bit sharper.
Nice review! Have you ever tried Clover Takumi bamboo needles? I love them. They are pretty sturdy and don't bend like the birch. I also use the HiyaHiya, Chiagoo, and Add lace. Believe it or not, I have some Susan Bates, which are really inexpensive and they work well, too. I need to stop knitting stuff for other people so I can get back into socks! Tee-hee! Thank you for the good info.
New to some of these excepting now searching to better comprehend. I looked in and heard mentioned the swivel types before from some of my FAV'S:D how do you all feel about interchangeable and reversible knitting and crochet conversions? Take a look at Tulips
Great review.. I tend to agree with you on most points.. My fav needles are the ChaiGoo Red Lace one’s.. I love everything about them... HiYaHiya Sharps are OK, but I’m not a big fan of the cord.. ChaiGoo has a much better cord.. When I want a wooden needle, I reach for the beautiful Knit Oicks needles.. They are both pointy and smooth.. I hate working with bamboo needles, and avoid them.. I don’t knit socks, so I cannot speak to the tiny sock needles.. But I’m sure I would choose ChaiGoo..
It depends on how loose or tight you knit! I knit on the looser side and like dense socks since I am prone to holes so typically use size 0. If you are a tighter knitter you could size up. That is for fingering weight yarn, of course thicker yarn means bigger needle
I have sock yarn that is stretchy and size 2 dpn's should I start with non-stretchy yarn? This is my first time knitting socks or anything for that matter lol
Hmm, do you know what kind of yarn it is? You could try to knit a swatch and see how it looks with what you have. If it’s loose and holey it’s probably not a great choice
I haven’t tried that yarn before but looks like it recommends a us size 1 so depending on your gauge the socks might end up a bit loose. Good luck with your first project, whatever you decide!!
I think you would love the Chiagoo LACE needles. They have no bend and are sharper. It sounds to me like the Hiya Hiya needle with the Chiagoo cord, best of both worlds! This is a great video. Very informative.

I had the same frustration with the Karbonz...I thought it was me, because I do like the double points.
I really wanted to like them!
Thank you for this video, Kendra! I prefer Cihiagoo red lace - hands down - for sock-making. I use Magic Loop and 40 inch.

We must have similar taste in needles!!

You should review the different square needles. I use the 9" chiagoo circs
Great idea, those would be fun to try! I have yet to try the 9" as well!

These are not lace. Lace doesn’t have a bend and are sharper.

ChiaoGoo red lace are bar none the best...the cord is the most flexible I have ever found, you don't even know it's there
Great review..
Thanks for sharing!
👍
OMG, I just bought Karbonz double pointed needles for sock, and very disappointed, they snag at the join of the tip on every needle.
Oh no!! How frustrating!

Thank you for your work on this.
how do you determine what size needle to use to make socks?
It depends on how loose or tight you knit! I knit on the looser side and like dense socks since I am prone to holes so typically use size 0. If you are a tighter knitter you could size up. That is for fingering weight yarn, of course thicker yarn means bigger needle
I have sock yarn that is stretchy and size 2 dpn's should I start with non-stretchy yarn? This is my first time knitting socks or anything for that matter lol
Hmm, do you know what kind of yarn it is? You could try to knit a swatch and see how it looks with what you have. If it’s loose and holey it’s probably not a great choice
www.premieryarns.com/collections/premier-yarns/products/pwoolfrsk?variant=24360096006 this is the yarn i have
I haven’t tried that yarn before but looks like it recommends a us size 1 so depending on your gauge the socks might end up a bit loose. Good luck with your first project, whatever you decide!!
Very helpful, thank you !
Thank You Very Much 💞
Try addi.
I'd steer clear of the Knitter's Pride, they are not worth the price or the trouble. Hiyahiya and chiaogoo are better investments.
Thanks for your input!
I have used Knitters Pride acrylic and they lasted exactly one year and the tip snapped off.
Which has the best cable?
My fav is the Chiaogoo cable 😊
Join Facebook group “Chiaogoo Divas” it’s great!
I get my knitting needles from yarn.com. Amazing prices there
Thanks for the tip!
I wish she would just get on with it. I need to know a good one with a flexible cord and I don't want to wade through endless video to find out.
kt1pl2 I would go with the chiaogoo if the most important thing for you is the flexible cord.
