- This short video predates the movie "Genghis Blues", and was used to promote the duo for concert bookings. Produced by Friends of Tuva in the mid-1990's.
Kongar-ol Ondar and his student Bady-Dorzhu Ondar appear on the Chevy Chase show, October 1 1993.
Kongar-ol Ondar passed away July 24, 2013 in his beloved country of Tuva as a result of complications after emergency surgery for a hemorrhage of the brain. Needless to say, this comes as a shock to all those who knew him and all those who enjoyed his music. Thankfully, we still have his recordings to remember him by.
I think I found this video and rented it. I was so taken by the music and story line that I ended up calling Paul Pena in San Francisco maybe 3-4 years before he died. He was so excited about sharing this technique that he spent 5-10 minutes teaching me some about it. It was obvious I was lacking in skills but realized I had met a powerful man.
genghis blues, is a film deserves a viewing... truly inspirational story and wonderful music.....
Twenty years ago I became aware of Tuvan throat singing. I was fortunate to find a Video of the 1993 Tuvan competition in Ulan Batur. Then in 95 or 96 I saw the Genghis Blues on preminum TV. Have been fascinated with Paul Pena and Harggai since. The man is a genius.
I am so sorry to learn of Paul`s passing away. His attitude is a inspireation to me and will never forget his impact on the Tuvan people with his throat singing.
