So I just sold my 24-105 which was virtually glued to my 5DII for years, and replaced it with the Tamron 24-70. Then, wondering if I made the right decision, found your great comparison review. (I love having my opinion confirmed by experts) I had both lenses briefly and my quick testing confirmed what you found. The Tamron is as good at f/2.8 as the Canon is at f/4 (except at the corners) and significantly the Tamron was 1/3 to 1/2 stop faster. Loosing the 105mm end was my greatest concern but as you found, it is possible to crop your way to 105mm with the Tamron and still come out ahead. Thanks for a great channel.
+Michael Parker To get the 100mm get back go for the 100mm F/2 prime. It's about 500 dollars, it's extremely sharp. It's sharper than 100mm F 2.8 L series prime. It is an amazing lens. Shoot the portraits with that. 24-70 for everything else.
+Michael Parker you can try the 70mm end f2.8 at tamron, it is very soft (especially the corner) compare to canon 24-105. i think Tony got a bad copy of 24-105. this lens is very sharp wide open at any zoom range. tamron 24-70 is also very weak, can be destroyed by one drop. but canon can survive.
Hey Guys, Thank you for the excellent review! I own the 24-105 Canon f4 L that is shown in this review. I am a working pro and depend on this as my go to event lens. I am sorry for the long post, but if you are considering this lens, I think that it is important that you all know this!!! Many people have had the 01 issue, broken ribbon cables inside the lens, etc... Well, what a nightmare this lens turned out to be. Started getting the 01 error during an event. Had to go to my Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L workhorse to finish the event and crop in to make the shots right. Long story short, the stabilization unit had to be be replaced at a cost of about 60% of the value of the lens at that point in time. I had Canon Pro Services do the repair (I am a CPS member). All seemed well until the very next event, another once in a lifetime affair. The lens started acting strange, focus wise, in the middle of the event. Another long story short, an incompetent Canon tech did not tighten the front element screws properly and many important shots were compromised because the front of the lens was literally about to fall off and I did not realize this in the darkness of the event venue!!! The effect was akin to an unintentional Lens Baby effect, but on groups of people! I sent the lens back and they re-assembled the loose parts at no additional charge, but this did not bring back the compromised images!!! Next chapter, the AF/Manual selector switch started acting up. Not switching with a distinctive click, but instead spongy. I thought that they would just be able to clean it. NOPE, a $250 repair estimate after I explained all of the above to them in writing, twice. I told them to forget it, I would just live with it, which I did until I started noticing that when I turned the camera for a vertical shot, the focus would be significantly off in the upper half of the frame. No doubt it's the d*mn stabilizer unit again or loose elements! No, way, I am done! My confidence has been shaken with using this lens. I have been renting the mark II version of this lens until I make a purchase decision. It will not be a Canon lens though! So I am very much looking into this Tamron model and thank you again for this review. I think that I am going to purchase the Tamron because of the quality of the optics, the stabilization unit and that I am used to shooting at F4 anyway due to owning this crappy Canon lens. Bottom line, Canon not take care of me! BTW, The Canon facility that I used was the NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA location.

I must say that I've been using my Canon 24-105 (purchased in 2013) for many months and have *never* seen CA anything like that seen in your video! It's a super fantastic lens. Great video and good testing though, and will certainly be looking more closely at Tamrons from now on.
Well, I designed the testing environment specifically to create CA by adding heavy backlighting. In low contrast situations, you'd never notice it, but if you work on sunny days, you'll see it frequently. I wanted to test it because it's one of those factors that separates great lenses like the Tamron from lenses that are only "very good", like the Canon. Even if it does come up in a real shot, it's not a huge deal to fix... it's just a bit of a pain.
I have both of these lenses, starting with the Canon. I always hated the Canon 24-105L but never could put my finger on why. I assumed it was the smaller aperture. I got the Tamron for Christmas and I love it. When I need longer than 70 I pull out the 70-200L. The Tamron does have a bit of distortion at the edges when wide and some situations seem to exacerbate the vignette effect when wide open but neither is bad, just annoying.

I have the Canon 24-105 f/4 and I love it. I never even looked at the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. One thing I hate about the 24-105 is lens creep. O ya and I payed $1050 for it......
Did you buy it at a retail store like best buy or something like it? i know best buy sells it for about $1200. I had it and just sold it for 650 because on my t4i it was terrible and yeah the lens does creep, despite what some of the reviews said.
Lenses are normally sharper when stopped down a bit, so it isn't really a fair comparison. I wonder how they would compare at f/5.6. Also, have you compared the Tamron to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8?
Any results with the Canon stopped down? You're comparing one lens wide open, to another stopped down. I'd love to see results compared at various apertures.

I have made my choice at the very beginning (when Tamron release it) and the Tamron is my preferred option. 50% of the time is on my main dslr(full-frame), great event/wedding lens, biggest plus in the completion is the VC (vibration compensation) which works superbly and helps in low light(slow speed) and hand held video.
Very good review Tony and Chelsea; I own both lenses, and I agree with all your points, the best part for me is the f2.8 and the IS. The Tammy is a little heavy but it doesn't bother me. I like the extra reach of the 24/105, but am getting used to the Tammy and I haven't had the Canon on my body since I got the Tammy.

I'm in the market for one of these..thing is, the newer version of the 24-105 should knock the price down on this one, plus plenty on the used market in a couple of months. Tamron, sharper, but the trusty Canon is more durable and (soon to be) much cheaper.

I have the Tamron on a D700 and it has been basically flawless. I must say durability has been fantastic aside from having to tape the lens hood in place. I’ve been sprayed with mud and water with that set and I’ve bounced it off of asphalt and rock cliff faces a number of times accidentally and it still keeps ticking. If money is ever on the line for a photo the 700 and that Tamron are the first rig I reach for.

Do a "walk around lens shootout" for APS-C PLZ! I am curious how the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM compares to others! I have this lens but I think its lacking a little for the price.
Hey Tony, I'm finally going to upgrade my xsi to a 6D. I was considering on picking up the kit 24-105mm, but after watching your video I'm thinking otherwise. I already own a Tamron 28-75/f2.8 (non VC) and very happy with it. Do you think the 24-105 is worth the added 30mm and IS?
I think if I had borrowed an expensive lens for an assessment and then have to send it back in 2 pieces I would be inclined to say nice things about it? I have the Cannon 24/105 and it's a great allround lens but if I want super sharpness and a fast lens I would look to my primes.
Interesting video, I bought a Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC to replace both my 24-105 F4L & Tamron 28-75 F2.8, owned it for a day when I realised that the 24-70 was NOT as good IQ wise as the Canon 24-105 F4L and so I sold it on, Tamron, whilst making some good lenses obviously still have VERY POOR quality control based on my experience with numerous lenses of a number of years....
Tony what are your thoughts on the 24-70 Tamron in comparison to the 70-200 2.8 Tamron? (I have the later and cant describe how PRO and fast it feels in every way.)
What about the Sigma 24-105, that lens seems like a winner. Would be great to see a three way comparison between the lenses reviewed here and the new Sigma lens. I own the 24-105 (two in fact), but recently i have had a crazing for something sharper, and its down to a choice - get a few primes, or a new standard zoom. Review and any info would be GREATLY appreciated. Keep up the good work!
This was a test to find the best walking around lenses, and the Canon 24-70 lacks image stabilization, which (for me, anyway) eliminates it as a contender for a walking around lens.

Hi Tony. In the video you say you could crop the Tamron files to match the Canon at a 105mm because it's so sharp. But what about background blur (DOF)? 105mm at F4 would give a better background blur then the same picture shot with a 70mm at 2.8 right? I'm tempted to get the Tamron (I do a lot of indoor event and portraiture work), But I can't aford both. I do have the 70-200 F2.8 but I don't want to switch lenses all the time.
I'm buying my first DSLR camera and I'm leaning toward the Nikon D3300. I love your reviews!!!! I love how compact the Nikon is, but I understand that I will need a better lens. I mainly use my camera for indoor shots of my triplets like at concerts, recitals, etc. Most of the time there is very low light and pics come out blurry. Considering the Tamron lens. What lens would you suggest for my Nikon and for how I want to use it?

I think I got a lemon with my Tamron 24-70. Shots were blurry at 1/60. My lens didn't get sharp till f7 and it still wasn't anything great. Might try another copy, but I'm a bit more cautious now.
Tony, it looked cold where you were, did you guys still use your lenses without a protective filter even with snow in the air? I have taken your advice regarding filters and still getting used to the idea of not using one!

Keep in mind the 24-105 is handicapped here because it is wide open. Would of been interesting and more comparative to see some tests at f8 or f11. That said, I own the Tamron and love it.
The Tamron 24-70 2.8 is the best choice if you can't afford the Canon 24-70 Mk2 variant. However it has some issues and it's not inconsistent focussing. Focus consistency is very good anno 2017. They probably have improved it over the years. Sample variation has also become less of an issue. A year after release about 50% of the consumer reviews were bad because of problems. Today it's less than 10% (don't remember the exact number). But to get the most out of it you have to rely on AFMA (Auto Focus Micro Adjustment). I've tried two samples and they both needed some serious adjustment on the wide AND tele side in opposite directions on my Canon 6D. When you have that dialed in it will front focus just a little on subjects really close by. But when you know it, you can compensate. Another issue is that the vibration control (image stabilisation) takes some time to start up. If you press the shutter release out of the blue, VC will make your image blurrier with a zig-zag pattern. If you press it half, wait for half a second and then take the picture it works very good. But this is also something you have to know in advance.
I went to your link at the end of the video and the Tamron is $145 higher than the price you displayed on the video - I know it's rare for equipment to go UP in price (Jan 17, still holiday prices?) Probably want to avoid posting prices in the future. That being said, this video was very helpful in helping me narrow the choices to replace my broken Tamron 28-300. Now, on to the comparison of the Tamron, Sigma, and Canon 70-200s. Then, to print some money ; )
hey thanks so much for your great and very informative tutorials and reviews! For someone from Europe/Germany it is great that you speak so clear and understandable. I'm a let's say beginner and learn a lot from your work here. There are lots of other tutorials but you seem to give some really essential informations. I bought the canon kit objektiv together with the 6 D full frame and more or less the fotos are just not sharp. I brought it twice for adjustment (or how you call that?) and after that it was still not sharp. then I sent it to canon germany and they changed one lens group and the autofokus system and now it is still not sharp. I talked to so many people- also the staff from the stores- and every one just said it's a great lens...so it was really very very interesting for me what you said about this 'great L lens...' and how you see the quality of that lens in fact. your samples are completely great to understand for everyone! thank you guys :)
A most interesting review - thank you. Since going digital several years ago with a Canon 20D I have almost always used Canon glass (including the 24-105), my only none Canon lens was a Sigma - guess what its the ONLY lens that went faulty ! Please review the 24- 105/ 24- 70 F4 & F2.8 MK 2. Thanks again.
Thanks for the great review. A quick question a bit off topic; I noticed you were filming in cold weather, what would you suggest is the coldest one should be out filming with dslrs? Also, how long of a period of time ? Thanks for any suggestions :)
I don't know what the coldest weather would be, but I've been out well below zero and the only problem I have is that the batteries die very quickly. I carry extra batteries and keep them close to my body (and thus warmer), and swap them out on a regular basis. After warming a battery back up, they tend to come back to life for a bit.
I do appreciate this review. However, I do question why the test pictures all are done at 70mm, which is a bad focal length for the Canon. My experience is that the Canon is good at 24, best at 35-50 and that 70-105 are the worst. Further, I would appreciate a comparison of pictures from other apertures, such as f/5,6 and f/8. All that said, the things you do compare, you do very well indeed. Thank you!
I did test other focal lengths and apertures but didn't find any surprises--the Tamron was consistently sharper. It's just a far better lens, optically.
Alright I'm convinced. I just bought a grey market version on Amazon for around $800, prime shipping. Going to probably list the 24-105 f/4L on eBay to offset the cost a little. Next on the list.... a 70-200 f/2.8 with I.S.

Jordan Wallace We chose the Sigma 24-105 f4 (sdp.io/s105) over the Tamron for general shooting. The extra range helps more than the extra stop, and you can get better background blur at 105 f4 than you can at 70mm f2.8. Enjoy!
Great review guys. I think it's really helped me make my decision. I would say though, I think it was a little unfair on the Tamron in regards to the build quality... it's heavier because it's f 2.8, and you did kind of drop it!

These are both full-frame lenses, but for travel, I prefer the Sigma. For the 7D, I'd check out the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8; it's amazing. Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens review
Rui He We could, though they're rather apples to oranges. The Tamron is a stop faster, so it's better for action, such as weddings and events. The Sigma is more versatile, so it's better for things like travel and vacation. At the long end, the Sigma can even make a decent portrait. They're both very sharp.
problems here: 1). sample variation. One 24-105 may not be as sharp as another. you need to increase the sample size and average. 2). you cant compare the tamron stopped down to the canon wide open. lenses are sharper when they are stopped down. shooting the canon at 5.6 would have been a more fair comparison, or shooting the tamron wide open.
stoplossM4 1) We actually own two 24-105s, and you can also check DxOMark's P-Mpix ratings for the lens if you want another opinion (shortcut: they agree with me). 2) I certainly can compare the Tamron stopped down. How would it be ok to compare it wide open, gathering twice as much light and shooting at a lower ISO? Clearly that would be better in other ways.
I completely agree that keeping the 24-105 at its maximum aperture affected the fairness of this comparison. The performance of the Canon at 5.6 and up completely blows the Tamron out of the water.
+Graeme Foster Yeah, the old 24-70 f2.8 is much less sharp. It has the same great build quality and no focus breathing as the newer Canon, though... but I still wouldn't use it.
I have recently upgraded from canon 24 104 to tamron 24 70 and it cracked by just dropping it from 1feet hight on a hard floor. It is build quality is huge and bulky but with poor plastic. Though the lens is lot sharper than canon 24 105
Seeing as the canon is an old workhorse and could be prone to a little play, have you confirmed the AF micro adjustment of the lens is calibrated with the camera?
Im torn between choosing this tamron lense or sigma 24-105 art lense. Lense would be my general walking around lense and occasional wedding/birthday lense combined with my 50 and 35 primes. Which one would be the better option combined with canon 6D?
+Juha Nyman We prefer the Sigma 24-105 f4. The ability to reach to 105 is really powerful, and even allows for impromptu headshots with better background blur than you could get with a 24-70 f2.8.

Hi all - I live in Colombo, Sri Lanka where it is very hot, and a few people have suggested that I store my gear in a dry cabinet. What are your thoughts on this? I don't want to be too hindered by this, as I like keeping my stuff in my Billingham and grab my bag whenever. At the same time, I don't want fungus and all those issues on my lenses/bodies etc. Thanks!
Would you consider the Tamron 24-70 to be better than the Sigma 24-105? I'm missing a non-kit lens in that area, and would like to know your suggestion on what to save up to buy next.
evillimp000 I prefer the Sigma 24-105; at 105mm you can get a good headshot with nice background blur, which just isn't possible with the Tamron. The Tamron has pretty severe focus breathing, so it's less than 50mm when shooting up close. Only choose the Tamron if you need the extra stop to use a lower ISO and you're shooting very wide.
I too am looking for a 24-70 full frame lense... where quality and durability are essential. I'd rather deal with an adapter to E mount if needs be than be comprimised for trying to maintain brand loyalty. any updates on the best suggestion with today's options? ( sorry, the buying guide its the next in the series to buy on my list. sdp and the lr are betting digested currently)

I have one question, I have a 70D looking to upgrade to a lens optically better with a fixed aperture than my 18-135 stm lens. How in terms of sharpness would you say the Tamron 24-70 VC is in comparison? I have a wedding and lots of events that are coming up to shoot for. Would the Tamron be my best option? Also looking at the Sigma 18-50. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
I wouldn't recommend the Tamron 24-70 for the 70D; it's a full-frame lens. Instead, look at the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 (amzn.to/14bTUMS), which is the best zoom in the world for APS-C cameras, IMO. Also look at the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 (amzn.to/PUvWEf). More info in my Photography Buying Guide (links in the description).
Sorry, I haven't tested it. I wouldn't recommend a full-frame lens for a crop body... there are lots of great options designed specifically for the APS-C bodies.
My 24-105 has never disappointed me. Super sharp and will be with me for a very long time. The problem with Tamron or other 3rd party lenses are you cant use in camera CA control and stuff. But If i sigma ever (fingers crossed) makes a 24-70 I would not hesitate one minute to go pre-order one :)
I tested 4 Tamron lenses in Thailand against the 24-105 Canon and found there to be a soft area(almost a double image) on all 4 at 24mm. but sharper in the centre, which is not acceptable. Might have been a bad batch, shame I really wanted it to work for me, Tony love your video's

So I am very much looking into this Tamron model and thank you again for this review. I think that I am going to purchase the Tamron because of the quality of the optics, the stabilization unit and that I am used to shooting at F4 anyway due to owning this crappy Canon lens.
Bottom line, Canon not take care of me!

I must say that I've been using my Canon 24-105 (purchased in 2013) for many months and have *never* seen CA anything like that seen in your video! It's a super fantastic lens. Great video and good testing though, and will certainly be looking more closely at Tamrons from now on.
Well, I designed the testing environment specifically to create CA by adding heavy backlighting. In low contrast situations, you'd never notice it, but if you work on sunny days, you'll see it frequently. I wanted to test it because it's one of those factors that separates great lenses like the Tamron from lenses that are only "very good", like the Canon.
Even if it does come up in a real shot, it's not a huge deal to fix... it's just a bit of a pain.
I have both of these lenses, starting with the Canon. I always hated the Canon 24-105L but never could put my finger on why. I assumed it was the smaller aperture. I got the Tamron for Christmas and I love it. When I need longer than 70 I pull out the 70-200L. The Tamron does have a bit of distortion at the edges when wide and some situations seem to exacerbate the vignette effect when wide open but neither is bad, just annoying.
The Tamron lens is on my radar. Thanks for this, Tony and Chelsea.

Been using the Tamron for about 2 years now, and have no regrets as yet. Considering the cost and image quality, its a winner for me over.
I have the Canon 24-105 f/4 and I love it. I never even looked at the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8. One thing I hate about the 24-105 is lens creep. O ya and I payed $1050 for it......
Did you buy it at a retail store like best buy or something like it? i know best buy sells it for about $1200. I had it and just sold it for 650 because on my t4i it was terrible and yeah the lens does creep, despite what some of the reviews said.

Lenses are normally sharper when stopped down a bit, so it isn't really a fair comparison. I wonder how they would compare at f/5.6. Also, have you compared the Tamron to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8?
Any results with the Canon stopped down? You're comparing one lens wide open, to another stopped down. I'd love to see results compared at various apertures.

I have made my choice at the very beginning (when Tamron release it) and the Tamron is my preferred option. 50% of the time is on my main dslr(full-frame), great event/wedding lens, biggest plus in the completion is the VC (vibration compensation) which works superbly and helps in low light(slow speed) and hand held video.

Very good review Tony and Chelsea; I own both lenses, and I agree with all your points, the best part for me is the f2.8 and the IS. The Tammy is a little heavy but it doesn't bother me. I like the extra reach of the 24/105, but am getting used to the Tammy and I haven't had the Canon on my body since I got the Tammy.
For the average Joe, the Canon 24-105 f4L is a great lens, I try to stay away for third party lens and I only buy L lens for my 5D MK3

I'm in the market for one of these..thing is, the newer version of the 24-105 should knock the price down on this one, plus plenty on the used market in a couple of months. Tamron, sharper, but the trusty Canon is more durable and (soon to be) much cheaper.

I have the Tamron on a D700 and it has been basically flawless. I must say durability has been fantastic aside from having to tape the lens hood in place. I’ve been sprayed with mud and water with that set and I’ve bounced it off of asphalt and rock cliff faces a number of times accidentally and it still keeps ticking. If money is ever on the line for a photo the 700 and that Tamron are the first rig I reach for.

I have the Tamron for Nikon and I'm very happy with it
I own the Tamron 24-70 and it is on my 5D3 and so far I love it. Sharp, VC is amazing able to shoot at like 1/20 shutter speeds with a use able image.
Do a "walk around lens shootout" for APS-C PLZ! I am curious how the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM compares to others! I have this lens but I think its lacking a little for the price.

Interesting video, I bought a Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC to replace both my 24-105 F4L & Tamron 28-75 F2.8, owned it for a day when I realised that the 24-70 was NOT as good IQ wise as the Canon 24-105 F4L and so I sold it on, Tamron, whilst making some good lenses obviously still have VERY POOR quality control based on my experience with numerous lenses of a number of years....
Tony what are your thoughts on the 24-70 Tamron in comparison to the 70-200 2.8 Tamron? (I have the later and cant describe how PRO and fast it feels in every way.)

Sorry if this question was asked before, but why wouldn't u do a test with the Canon 24-70mm seems more of a equal test to me.
This was a test to find the best walking around lenses, and the Canon 24-70 lacks image stabilization, which (for me, anyway) eliminates it as a contender for a walking around lens.

Hi Tony. In the video you say you could crop the Tamron files to match the Canon at a 105mm because it's so sharp. But what about background blur (DOF)? 105mm at F4 would give a better background blur then the same picture shot with a 70mm at 2.8 right? I'm tempted to get the Tamron (I do a lot of indoor event and portraiture work), But I can't aford both. I do have the 70-200 F2.8 but I don't want to switch lenses all the time.
I'm buying my first DSLR camera and I'm leaning toward the Nikon D3300. I love your reviews!!!! I love how compact the Nikon is, but I understand that I will need a better lens. I mainly use my camera for indoor shots of my triplets like at concerts, recitals, etc. Most of the time there is very low light and pics come out blurry. Considering the Tamron lens. What lens would you suggest for my Nikon and for how I want to use it?

I think I got a lemon with my Tamron 24-70. Shots were blurry at 1/60. My lens didn't get sharp till f7 and it still wasn't anything great. Might try another copy, but I'm a bit more cautious now.
Tony, it looked cold where you were, did you guys still use your lenses without a protective filter even with snow in the air? I have taken your advice regarding filters and still getting used to the idea of not using one!
Yes, definitely. As always, I used hoods--that helped to keep the snow off the lens.

Keep in mind the 24-105 is handicapped here because it is wide open. Would of been interesting and more comparative to see some tests at f8 or f11. That said, I own the Tamron and love it.
The Tamron 24-70 2.8 is the best choice if you can't afford the Canon 24-70 Mk2 variant. However it has some issues and it's not inconsistent focussing. Focus consistency is very good anno 2017. They probably have improved it over the years. Sample variation has also become less of an issue. A year after release about 50% of the consumer reviews were bad because of problems. Today it's less than 10% (don't remember the exact number). But to get the most out of it you have to rely on AFMA (Auto Focus Micro Adjustment). I've tried two samples and they both needed some serious adjustment on the wide AND tele side in opposite directions on my Canon 6D. When you have that dialed in it will front focus just a little on subjects really close by. But when you know it, you can compensate. Another issue is that the vibration control (image stabilisation) takes some time to start up. If you press the shutter release out of the blue, VC will make your image blurrier with a zig-zag pattern. If you press it half, wait for half a second and then take the picture it works very good. But this is also something you have to know in advance.
I went to your link at the end of the video and the Tamron is $145 higher than the price you displayed on the video - I know it's rare for equipment to go UP in price (Jan 17, still holiday prices?) Probably want to avoid posting prices in the future.
That being said, this video was very helpful in helping me narrow the choices to replace my broken Tamron 28-300. Now, on to the comparison of the Tamron, Sigma, and Canon 70-200s. Then, to print some money ; )

There are lots of other tutorials but you seem to give some really essential informations. I bought the canon kit objektiv together with the 6 D full frame and more or less the fotos are just not sharp. I brought it twice for adjustment (or how you call that?) and after that it was still not sharp. then I sent it to canon germany and they changed one lens group and the autofokus system and now it is still not sharp. I talked to so many people- also the staff from the stores- and every one just said it's a great lens...so it was really very very interesting for me what you said about this 'great L lens...' and how you see the quality of that lens in fact. your samples are completely great to understand for everyone! thank you guys :)

Since going digital several years ago with a Canon 20D I have almost always used Canon glass (including the 24-105), my only none Canon lens was a Sigma - guess what its the ONLY lens that went faulty ! I don't know what the coldest weather would be, but I've been out well below zero and the only problem I have is that the batteries die very quickly. I carry extra batteries and keep them close to my body (and thus warmer), and swap them out on a regular basis. After warming a battery back up, they tend to come back to life for a bit.
I do appreciate this review. However, I do question why the test pictures all are done at 70mm, which is a bad focal length for the Canon. My experience is that the Canon is good at 24, best at 35-50 and that 70-105 are the worst.
Further, I would appreciate a comparison of pictures from other apertures, such as f/5,6 and f/8.
All that said, the things you do compare, you do very well indeed. Thank you!
I did test other focal lengths and apertures but didn't find any surprises--the Tamron was consistently sharper. It's just a far better lens, optically.
Alright I'm convinced. I just bought a grey market version on Amazon for around $800, prime shipping. Going to probably list the 24-105 f/4L on eBay to offset the cost a little. Next on the list.... a 70-200 f/2.8 with I.S.

Jordan Wallace We chose the Sigma 24-105 f4 (sdp.io/s105) over the Tamron for general shooting. The extra range helps more than the extra stop, and you can get better background blur at 105 f4 than you can at 70mm f2.8. Enjoy!
Great review guys. I think it's really helped me make my decision. I would say though, I think it was a little unfair on the Tamron in regards to the build quality... it's heavier because it's f 2.8, and you did kind of drop it!

Rui He We could, though they're rather apples to oranges. The Tamron is a stop faster, so it's better for action, such as weddings and events. The Sigma is more versatile, so it's better for things like travel and vacation. At the long end, the Sigma can even make a decent portrait. They're both very sharp.

problems here: 1). sample variation. One 24-105 may not be as sharp as another. you need to increase the sample size and average. 2). you cant compare the tamron stopped down to the canon wide open. lenses are sharper when they are stopped down. shooting the canon at 5.6 would have been a more fair comparison, or shooting the tamron wide open.
stoplossM4 1) We actually own two 24-105s, and you can also check DxOMark's P-Mpix ratings for the lens if you want another opinion (shortcut: they agree with me).
2) I certainly can compare the Tamron stopped down. How would it be ok to compare it wide open, gathering twice as much light and shooting at a lower ISO? Clearly that would be better in other ways.
I completely agree that keeping the 24-105 at its maximum aperture affected the fairness of this comparison. The performance of the Canon at 5.6 and up completely blows the Tamron out of the water.

+Graeme Foster Yeah, the old 24-70 f2.8 is much less sharp. It has the same great build quality and no focus breathing as the newer Canon, though... but I still wouldn't use it.
I have recently upgraded from canon 24 104 to tamron 24 70 and it cracked by just dropping it from 1feet hight on a hard floor. It is build quality is huge and bulky but with poor plastic. Though the lens is lot sharper than canon 24 105
Seeing as the canon is an old workhorse and could be prone to a little play, have you confirmed the AF micro adjustment of the lens is calibrated with the camera?
Yes, and I manually focused for the lab tests. The copy I tested is only about a year old.
How is the Tamron in comparison to the Canon 24-70 F4L?
Im torn between choosing this tamron lense or sigma 24-105 art lense. Lense would be my general walking around lense and occasional wedding/birthday lense combined with my 50 and 35 primes. Which one would be the better option combined with canon 6D?
+Juha Nyman We prefer the Sigma 24-105 f4. The ability to reach to 105 is really powerful, and even allows for impromptu headshots with better background blur than you could get with a 24-70 f2.8.

I don't want to be too hindered by this, as I like keeping my stuff in my Billingham and grab my bag whenever. At the same time, I don't want fungus and all those issues on my lenses/bodies etc.

These are the type of lenses I would use for events. For every day "walk around" I would prefer a small 35 or 50.
Would you consider the Tamron 24-70 to be better than the Sigma 24-105? I'm missing a non-kit lens in that area, and would like to know your suggestion on what to save up to buy next.
evillimp000 I prefer the Sigma 24-105; at 105mm you can get a good headshot with nice background blur, which just isn't possible with the Tamron. The Tamron has pretty severe focus breathing, so it's less than 50mm when shooting up close.
Only choose the Tamron if you need the extra stop to use a lower ISO and you're shooting very wide.

How in terms of sharpness would you say the Tamron 24-70 VC is in comparison? I have a wedding and lots of events that are coming up to shoot for. Would the Tamron be my best option? I wouldn't recommend the Tamron 24-70 for the 70D; it's a full-frame lens. Instead, look at the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 (amzn.to/14bTUMS), which is the best zoom in the world for APS-C cameras, IMO. Also look at the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 (amzn.to/PUvWEf).

Sorry, I haven't tested it. I wouldn't recommend a full-frame lens for a crop body... there are lots of great options designed specifically for the APS-C bodies.
The non- vc is a bit too old, not really buying anymore. the Canon kit lens may give you similiar performance

My 24-105 has never disappointed me. Super sharp and will be with me for a very long time. The problem with Tamron or other 3rd party lenses are you cant use in camera CA control and stuff. But If i sigma ever (fingers crossed) makes a 24-70 I would not hesitate one minute to go pre-order one :)
I shoot raw, and let Lightroom automatically handle lens-specific adjustments. It works wonderfully, and supports this Tamron.
I tested 4 Tamron lenses in Thailand against the 24-105 Canon and found there to be a soft area(almost a double image) on all 4 at 24mm. but sharper in the centre, which is not acceptable. Might have been a bad batch, shame I really wanted it to work for me, Tony love your video's
