A farmer left devasted by the loss of his beloved dog fell to his knees in tears when he was surprised with a puppy after months of hoping for a new farm companion. Spencer Heafner, from Godfrey, Illinois, was reeling after the loss of his German Shephard, Bailey, who he adopted in 2014. Bailey had been by Spencer's side through the birth of his and his wife's twins - who Bailey always protected - and was always by Spencer’s side to round up cattle on the family’s farm. Over time, Spencer grew to see Bailey as somewhat of a best friend, only for the German Shepherd to suffer sudden health issues, completely out of the blue. Bailey's health started to decline rapidly, and soon she didn't interact, struggled to see and hear, and had no real quality of life on the farm, Spencer's wife, Jamie, said. Just before her 10th birthday, Bailey passed away, leaving Spencer more emotional than Jamie had expected, as he often welled up when looking back through old pictures and videos of his sidekick. Jamie knew she had to do something - and so she thought back to a previous conversation she had with her husband, when Spencer declared his fondness of blue heeler dogs. She decided to research the dogs online, and, two months after Bailey's passing, was able to find a breeder who had a puppy available. With Spencer's birthday in June, Jamie decided to plan an early surprise for her husband, which involved him going on an adventure around their farm. On May 10, Jamie captured Spencer's search on video, before her husband eventually made it to a box covered in bright wrapping paper.

People who say not to get a new dog after the loss of your best friend obviously doesn’t feel the same about their dogs as we do. I have a 7 yr. Old Shepherd/Husky and she saved me in the darkest time in my life and I know how he felt. I’m glad he was able to love again.

I still miss my first dog she slept with me from my age 4 to 18. I’m in my 60’s have had many cats and dogs since but still miss her. They are all so special. Glad you have a new puppy to ease your loss.

My dog Sisu was my best friend when my 6 year old daughter 💗passed. She was my only child. Sisu was always by my side and knew exactly how I was doing. He kept closer to me on our walks through the woods on bad days. Loosing Sisu was so painful because of the love and support he had given me. Dogs truly know how to love. I miss them both so so much. I’m grateful,to have been blessed with a son who is 18 years old now. 🩷💙💙🌹

I don't know about y'all but, for me, Nothing brings me more joy in this World than holding my two lil doggies. Abby a Dachshund mix and Stella a Terrier mix. They are the light 🕯️ in my Life. They helped me get through the loss and pain of losing Both of my Labs in the same year. (1/23/16)&(12/3/16)....was the hardest year of my Being....more so than battling Stage 3 Breast Cancer in 2022 😢. In Remission now 🤘. One's pets/family members help Heal and bring Great Joy no matter the situation. God bless y'all and All of HIS 🙏✨ Creatures. PS I'm still crying 😭 and dang if I didn't feel his Sorrow and Rejoice reading, seeing and holding his new pup 😢.

We lost our beloved german shepherd to cancer and we were devastated. That dog was a member of our family and his death left us so sad. It took us 3 years to come to terms with getting a new dog and we now have our gorgeous rescue dog who we love so much. German Shepherds, for those who have known one, are such loyal companions and when they go they leave such a huge hole in your heart. He will always have a special place in our memory.

This sure brought tears to my eyes thinking of the dogs I've lost, the last 2 very suddenly just like Bailey, so I know all of those emotions all too well--I am not sure we ever get over the loss of a beloved pet, we just go on because it's not our time. I always say there's a river of grief just below the surface that we never quite get over and that we can tap into when we have situations like this. No dog can ever replace Bailey, because like humans they are each unique, but his love for Maverick will be just as special because of her uniqueness. May they have many, many happy years together!

OMG, this was THE BEST! His reaction was so appropriate and very heart felt. I broke down just watching it. Seeing the huge amount of love this man has in his heart was amazing. Anyone would be lucky to have a person like this in their life. Bailey was gorgeous, but I'm partial to German Shepherds. But little Maverick is adorable!
My GS has brought so much to my life..he makes me laugh, he frustrates me w how smart he is..he “protects” our home 24/7, he loves every new person and animal he meets..

I've had German shepherds all my life, I've rescued many, but when they lass on you never forget them, i have three German shepherds now and always will as long as i live i have photos of every one of them on my wall, they've gone but never forgotten the hardest part is taking them to the vet's for the last time and staying with them till they've past on😢,
