The dangers of posting about your kids on social media, explained by a lawyer

  • There are many potential consequences of sharing your child's image and other personal information online, says lawyer and author Leah Plunkett.
Not only could photos be embarrassing for a child later on in life if they're in a job interview or trying to gain entrance to college or university, but they can be used and re-purposed in countless ways now and in the future by people and institutions that you may not even know.
"I would avoid (posting) any pictures of your child in any state of undress, even if it is a totally innocent day at the beach picture. Avoid posting any information that fully identifies your child by name, date of birth, or location," says Plunkett.
"Ideally, don't post pictures of your children on social media, instead look for other ways to share exciting moments with trusted family, friends, and others in your community that don't involve social media posts," she adds.

I don’t even find it necessary to post myself. I don’t care for ppl to know what I’m doing, what’s going on, all up in my business. I can’t imagine wanting to post my child

This is very important. I am afraid for all these kids whose parents just show off their kids online without thinking about who actually sees their picture! Its so selfish of the parents!

No one needs to post their children's photos/videos online. If they are doing it, it's just for attention/validation from people. No photos/videos of children should be posted until a child is an adult and can decide for themselves what they want to put online.

This has nothing to do with kids being online but parents posting their kids online. The kind of laws that can help are online privacy and data protection laws.

This is why its important to make your social media accounts private if you want to post a pic of yourself because we probably don't know who is seeing pics of yourselves. It could be a stranger, a creep, or Idk.

Yet another consequence of apathy in general population regarding learning the details of technology they now carry around with them everyday. Coding should have been taught since the early 2000's, education about data storage, privacy and mass data should have been a priority. It is too late now because of the cloud and AI development. Never have humans had a tool that people have so little general understanding of in terms of usage and consequences.

TH-cam had started to do preemptive action to prevent unthinkable consequences of social media posts in some channels that are related to children. For example, in most of the Classic "Sesame Street" videos, post commenting had been disabled in those videos to prevent worse things from happening (trolls, etc.) to keep the videos kid-friendly. Keenly, this is because even an innocent loose-talk single comment on the videos can be good enough to destroy the child's reputation or sanity.

I think it's more important to look at who is more likely to steal your data. Here I think companies are more likely than a random “online keyboard master” to share or steal your data with “blind” technics. I am pretty sure people who you trust are actually more likely that a random guy searching the web to try to steal your Childs picture.
