When I was at school, the entire place was a Faraday Cages, because it was refurbished from an old bomb shelter. Nobody, and I mean nobody could get a signal unless you were outside.
I live in a Faraday Cage. there are 2 to 3 layers of foil backed foam insulation over my entire house and the seams and corners are mostly taped also. When my parents built the house we had to take 2 screens off the windows facing the cell towers for cellphones to work inside the house.
Back in the (mainframe) days, a data center was built at an air force base in the state where I live. Unfortunately, when they activated it, the (large) disk drives would periodically have voltage spikes and drops causing problems. It was discovered that the ground control radar for the airplanes periodically swept the building in its circular sweep. The initial and temporary solution was to wrap the building in chicken wire which seemed to work until a more permanent solution could be implemented.
h7opolo, "electric fields push charges away from them." Uhm, depends on the charges and more importantly on the fields. Linus also didn't just misspeak, the animation shows a vertically changing field exerting a static force in the horizontal direction of the wave's propagation. What's that supposed to be, radiation pressure? Also, no word on the fact that EM waves need a minimum frequency for a given Faraday cage to work on them, which is especially important in case the whole explanation was meant to look at a static case.
He did state that the electric field was moving in a negative to positive direction which repels positive charges, so your first point is moot. For your second point, would the animation be more correct if the arrows and field lines pointed up and down instead of left and right?
h7opolo, maybe you should watch the video again. He not only doesn't say what you're saying there, he also said that electrons are drawn towards the signal source. That's total BS. And even if he'd said what you're saying, it _still_ be wrong by 90 degrees. Sorry, but I can really find nothing redeeming about this explanation. The animation seems to mimick the one from Wikipedia, only that that one's not wrong. So go to Wikipedia everyone instead of watching this video.

If you want an escape from your phone, rather than buying the KFC Faraday Tent, smash your Iphone X to pieces, and buy a new one later. Repeat up to 4x and it'll still be cheaper than what KFC is selling. (assuming you sell your broken iphone for parts)
Hey, I've often considered having "faraday material" built into home walls to prevent the 100+ wifi signals in my neighborhood from confusing my router...lol, but seriously!
So is it put a positive charge on one side and a negative on the Other? would it have to be at a certain frequency level or how about imputing Audio current into it?
I have a question. I get that the Farady keeps electricty from getting to the inside or to the outside of the cage depending on where it originates from. But does the em field change shape to the extent that something powerful enough might not send electricity outside of the cage, but it still might bend space? And vice versa?
Hey Linus, I'm a huge fan. Always watch all your videos regularly. I have a request. Please make a detailed video at this topic. How does the international space station orbit around the Earth. Its movement, mechanism, procedure and route etc. I have heard some crazy things and can't understand them without any visual aid. I love space, I hope my request falls on your (Specifically your) teams ears. Much respect for you and your whole team Lines. Thanks :)
Hi Linus, I live in a condominium and I see anywhere form 15 to 20 Wi-Fi signals coming into my home. All of which are competing/searching for open channels. This is happening both on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Needless to say, wifi performance is significantly hindered as soon as I walk away from my SOHO router. Since I live on the top floor, I thought I would tare the flooring and install a wire mesh, like a carpet, before reinstalling the whole thing. What do you think of my idea? Do you think it would work? Ben
The explanation we learned in school was entirely different than in the video: if the metal bar is parallel to the electric part of the wave, the electrons in the metal move up and down along sending a em wave on their own that cancels the original one out by interference
0:45 that explanation is wrong, that explains how they work in electrostatics regime. What actually happens is that the electric field oscilates (due to the nature of the electromagnetic radiation itself), generating oscillating currents inside the conductor, witch dissipates energy by Joule effect.
As an example you could make a" Faraday cage" out of mirrors and asked what radiation gets thru. But it's not a Faraday cage but would block some signals and not block other signals reflection and shielding different things going on
Another way to think about this is the cage acting as an antenna. The antenna is driven by the incoming signal and emits a signal 180 deg out of phase into the cage and in phase back at the source reflecting the signal back like a mirror. A lot of lower level physics textbooks actually get this wrong and describe the process as the free electrons in the metal moving and then having their energy dissipated by resistance.
I worked in a nuclear facility for 10 years. AT&T is the only provider in which a cell signal can penetrate 2 feet of concrete. Not sure why they don’t market it that way.
I have been sleeping a a Faraday Cage for 2+ years. I can tell you, that when I wake up..... I feel relaxed and get a lot of Energy. I also only sleep 4+ Hours per day. Although I try to get my 8 Hours daily, but somehow I get so much Energy, I only need about 4+ Hours. NOTE: I have a video in my Channel about my Faraday Cage. If you can't find it, you can easily search on TH-cam Search Term: Jordan Bronson Faraday Cage
So you mentioned that the frequency of the sound wave actually determines whether or not the signal will pass through a hole in the faraday cage. However I do not understand how this works. My forward thought is that the wave will pass through based on the magnitude of the sound wave, not the frequency.
I seriously wish I could turn my apartment into a Faraday cage. All of my neighbors use dual band routers. The 5gz channels are all super congested, and the way my apartment is set up, we are close enough that their WiFi signals are strong/close enough to interfere a crap ton with mine....
and what lets say if you have your own quantumphysics lab in your home in a room and this room has to be shielded from every incoming waves and you dont have put a faraday cage around the room. Whats the best solutions ?
I have been sleeping a a Faraday Cage for 2+ years. I can tell you, that when I wake up..... I feel relaxed and get a lot of Energy. I also only sleep 4+ Hours per day. so if I ground the F. cage the positive/negative cancelling doesnt work? And what about an other signal coming from the opposite side, doesnt it charge the other side back to where it was allowing the first signal to propagate? I dont think so but I think it works slightly different than you said
I have been sleeping a a Faraday Cage for 2+ years. I can tell you, that when I wake up..... I feel relaxed and get a lot of Energy. I also only sleep 4+ Hours per day. Ah, the anti-theft signs... some shops have them, but they don't have devices to remove them, so it will "beep" while you walk through the anti-theft gate no matter what you do. (yes, I was talking about having the receipt for them, proving that you paid for them). There's a store called "Profi" that does this.
YES, the Cage MUST be grounded! I have been sleeping a a Faraday Cage for 2+ years. I can tell you, that when I wake up..... I feel relaxed and get a lot of Energy. The biggest problem with contactless cards at least here isn't the threat of identity theft but that they can be charged without entering a pin, this allows people to steal money by charging cards in peoples pocket.
For it to work best it needs to be grounded. I’ll be getting a new car shortly and I made sure that I DIDN’T want it to be keyless. I still want to put a key in the ignition to start to car even though they can probably pick up the key to unlock the car and plug into the OBD-II socket then they could start the car that way. I’ll be keeping my keys in an earthed metal box e.g. microwave or anything else that’s completely shielded. There’s a place close to me that do items for fast jets and commercial aircraft and they’ve got a faraday cage that can fit a double decker bus with room to spare!
If you enter a store with a metal lined steal bag the owner gets a vibrating signal on his pager. So he knows if there is a thieving guild in his store.
Lol.... the thing arround the cable is for grounding as well.... or how you call it.... to kill electricity when electricity gets to it..... im dutch lol
Do you think there are weapons that can be directed onto people that would do things to them that would do harm to people like cause vertigo?? and if so would a Faraday cage stop such a weapon??

Time for the airing of the grievances! Thumbs up for a festivus for the rest of us!
I love that you are rocking the Jibo shirt.
funny how im watching this on my new router which can reach the whole house now
For the sake of accuracy the radiation produced cannot enter the faraday cage but continues across it as in the space inside the cage is isolated
this should depend on the wavelength in relation to the size of the faraday cage though, no?
The explanation we learned in school was entirely different than in the video: if the metal bar is parallel to the electric part of the wave, the electrons in the metal move up and down along sending a em wave on their own that cancels the original one out by interference
Was the cut at 0:10 intentional (because crude)?

the holes must be smaller than wavelength or amplitude?
Reminds me of my pager repair days. Used the cage to block all signals to adjust sensitivity.
