  • This beauty has excellent undercarriage. Also the rpm's are lowered in order to prevent the tractor from spinning the tracks.

    Shows that when a machine is well built and maintained with a good operator, it will last for decades. Iron that built America and the world.

    The D9G is responsible for many of the interstate HWY's in the USA but more over it is also responsible for opening up many of the worlds toughest roads.
    We should all thank Cat and the D9G for opening up our world.

      They are certainly a great scraper Cat and aren't that bad on fuel. A powershift D8K will use as much fuel.

    I spent almost 46 years as a dozer driver and many hours on a 9G/H/L/N/R/T.. just to say you are wrong about the "G"& "H" series being the same with combined brakes/clutch,i was operating the first D9H in the UK for Miller mining.around 1975 ,the H had the clutch/brakes combined on the slewing levers...(the 9G did not)... the same as the D8K..which i also operated around 1979/80 for Shand mining...and yes, they were heavy for turning a full circle,especially on soft ground.....

    These old D9's are pretty good old machine. I ran one just like this one every day for 2 years peeling blast rock in a 90 foot cut. I later got a D8N high track with air. Much nicer and a lot easier on my back.

    Great score, having learned on an old cable lift D8 with power shift and box cab,, as well as an old straight drive D7 that only steered right unless pushing a load, you really appreciate a hydraulic . blade after those., thanks for posting a beautiful find

    my honest opinion, Caterpillar has not produced a finer machine than the 9G. Best scraper pusher made, with the solid tourque for quick load times.

  • @DieselPowerTV
    @DieselPowerTV  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @mrdeisel335 This dozer has a 3 speed power-shift transmission. It is basically an automatic with no clutch for the operator to engage or disengage. All you have to do is move the shifter to the desired speed and the machine moves.

    Our neighbor the Mulinex family had a big bladed cable 9 with a cage on it in Eastern KS when I was a kid 40 years ago. I was fascinated by it. It still sits south of Scranton KS on a farm

  • @justforever96
    @justforever96 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The blade lift is cable operated, rather than hydraulics. Early D9's were all like that, but most D9G's were hydraulic. Without the hydraulics, the blade is dependent on it's own weight to cut into the ground. With hydraulics, you can press down harder with it.

  • @DougDaCosta
    @DougDaCosta 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree. This one look like it was made after 1962. The old ones I operated had a steering clutch and brake for each track, and a clutch to engage the drive. I operated a newer little D-4 later that had the single lever control and foot throttle-down. It was okay, but nothing like the old stuff. Seems like the old iron was heavier and could push better.

    2 9s hooked together is called a Quad 9. They had a swivel pin in the middle. This particular dozer I don't think was "set-up" for pushing scrapers, it has a cable front unit on it and a cable rear with a hitch pin. I believe it was probably set up as a cat and can combo in its early life. May have pushed scrapers though. Many guys take the cable dozer blades from these old cats and modify them into a c-dozer (cushion dozer) for pushing scrapers.

  • @catdw21
    @catdw21 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The tracks are flat because the grousers are well worn,the blade is a spring loaded pushing one designed for pushing scrapers,it also has a pushing block on the back for another dozer to button up to it to help,..maybe been pushing 657/651s...the extra metal is to protect the skin on the blade,they wear thro' very quickly when pushing all the time,most dozers have a full size muck blade on for pushing,just as quick/easy to button up with one of these with experience...

  • @jrpaydirt8841
    @jrpaydirt8841 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love the ol flat tracks! I believe it is a D9G. The proof would be in the serial number. I was told that they made a few D9 that hooked together as a double tractor. I just tried to call the guy that told me about them and he no longer has that number. I beileve it is an ol push cat for scrapers. Look at the blade short and narrow. Also notice the extra metal in the center of the facing of the blade. Also the blade attaches to the center of the undercarriage. It has no push arms or trinions.

    The ol h and g series had the manual brakes seperate from the hand clutches for turning. The K series linked the brakes to the hand clutches. When you pulled the k series hand clutches they clutched the one side. Then when you pulled it all the way it would lock that one brake making all the power to the other side which made it turn. The only problem with the D9G and >H series was that they weighed so much especially if you had a full U blade up front. The G series I ran had a huge blade.

    I was thinking about this video. The spinning part in the winch drum, does that engage to the winch by a clutch, and reel it in when it's engaged? Also, how does the cable lift operate? Is that driven from a PTO/clutch type drive, or a hydraulic motor that controls the cable? And how does it hold the blade in the up position? By a line brake/drag?
