late 90s-mid 00s gaming was the best time to be a kid. 90s had the schoolyard rumors and shit, but the 00s still had them too since the internet (youtube basically lol) wasn't quite all there yet. shitty quality camera recordings of CRT TVs getting spread around meant you could kinda see it with your own eyes. now, the second a game comes out, every file gets shit out onto your lap for all to see. not that that is a bad thing, datamining is cool as fuck, but I do miss being able to search and search for shit that isn't there
F.E.A.R multiplayer also had ghost players. I was in LAN party with friends in our school computers and only our computers had the game on them. One time we were playing a 3 player match and there was a fourth player. We were all tripping out since they were straight up cleaning shop. So we would hide to see if we could catch the player and yeah it was there. Looking for us acting crazy. We were creeped out to say the least.
Had one appear in Halo 2 on Coagulation. I was alone and a black armored spartan popped into existence in the dustclouds of my warthog as I was practicing jumps. I could feel my face go pale as my tween self panicked. Good times
I like how we basically just took to the ideas of ancient mythologies of “must be mythical” when we couldn’t find a reason for something happening in a game
Hit me right in the nostalgia. When I was about 14 my buddy and I were playing custom game on lockout. That’s when the “ghost” appeared. It freaked us out. Long story short, we spent the next 20 min literally running and hiding from it around corners together. Until we got a call from a different friend on the house phone asking us why we are doing nothing but running and hiding from him. Lololol We were super bouncing and all that to hide up top. It always found us. Great memory, but you are correct. The ghosts are players. I literally had forgotten about that until I watched this today. That was more than half my life ago. Although there are a couple of memories I have with them that can’t be explained like that. No one ever took credit for being in my lobby, yet there was the ghost. Thanks for the video though. Oh man I used to have so much fun overloading maps in Halo 3. I never got to play online back then but I spent hours running around out of bounds alone. Same with the trick where you pick up a player on a turret in Forge mode and clip them through a wall.
I swear i remember this happening to me on Zanzibar running around to practice learning the map but without internet. Several times. But this Video (especially the title before i watched it) and your Minecraft's Lost Worlds video reminded me of another nostaglic "ghost" i have an old xbox 360 hardrive somewhere with probally about 50ish VERY custom Forgeworld maps and community pic uploads for HALO 3. Im talking racing maps, Gundam and mt killamanjaro, starwars walker with ghosts and atvs inside on the big ice map. I wonder how many of these old maps or images still exist??? Not even sure i can still acesses all that info or transfer it to new games.

Also the elite model was a general i think but the color was white.

Most of us had crap dial-up; one dude got Xbox Live and ended up DESTROYING everyone he played against at halo parties :D I'd team-kill, then jump onto his team at the end; everyone but him and I ended up pissed off at the end of one night... Where do memories go when we haven't remembered them in a while? I don't need to know that
Pretty easy, forums, chat rooms and messenging systems were big things back then, whoever's hosting gives out their ip address and anyone can manually connect to it, that's how Halo 1 worked for multiplayer, I don't think Bungie gave people the option of using their servers to host private games. Halo 2 I don't know if it worked more like Halo 1 or 3. Halo 3 was easy thanks to xbox live, just get added to someone's friends list and you can jump into their private game lobbies even if all slots were filled.
This doesn't explain their perfect godlike reflexes and aim. I enjoyed the video and your narration but I disagree woth your conclusion based off of my personal experiences. Ive never seen a ghost in a matchmaking game, only in custom matches and in forge. It could happen offline so it had to so sort of bot glitch with the game its self
