HX Stomp and HX Effects || More Powerful than a Helix? (sometimes yes)

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ ‪@line6movies‬ have really upped the stakes with their last few updates, in particular the 3.0 firmware update introduced some algorithms for Pitch shifting, Poly Sustain and so on that I think quite a few Line 6 HX Stomp users may have found difficult to make use of due to DSP constraints. That for me is when I started to use the Helix a bit more - but what about cheaper options - could a Line 6 HX Effects be one of the cheapest ways to get essentially the equivalent raw processing power of a full Helix with an HX Stomp and HX Effects?
    I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
    You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
    Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
    Try my patches for Pod GO for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...

    + you could use HX effects as a midi switcher for HX Stomp (no matter if it’s first or last in the chaîne): plenty of buttons, to switch both units at once.

    I've thought about this before. Never considered having the cab/IR outside of the HX Stomp but using the HX Effects for cab/IR, post-EQ/compression/delay/reverb would free up the Stomp for some nice dual amp combinations
    Damnit, I might have to buy a HX Effects now to go with my Stomp and two Eventide H9s

    Great video, John, just got an HX Stomp, few months ago got an HX FX (both, second hand, too), now I'm trying to figure out how to get great results from both units instead of using my Floor unit, this video arrives in the right timing for my experimentation process. Thanks!

    Awesome playing as always!
    I ended up running the Stomp and the HX effects in 4(-or many - it's stereo!-)CM. The disadvantages (if there are any - the latency isn't noticable to my dumb ears) are totally outweighed by the flexibility. I treat the Stomp as the amp (with benefits) and last in the chain so i can use the balanced outs/the headphone jack with my Tempus, etc, in the loop. Love it.
    (Still, I want a Rack/Floor/LT too. Maybe if/when I grow up one day)

    Howdy John, it’s been a wee while so good to see you exploring this set up! I enjoy my Stomp/HXFX rig for the reasons you mentioned but also (IMO) there are some other positives compared to my former Helix Floor too.
    1. Modular: if one unit breaks then it’s a few hundred quid to replace. A lot yes, but not a grand #Floor Plus I could probably limp on through the gig with one or the other unit - available amp/cab depending.
    2. I can add or take away Exp pedals depending on what I need that day. The Floor has that big old Exp pedal attached regardless. Keeps bags lighter!
    3. This might sound daft but as the cost of Stomp+HXFX is less that makes me feel less “bad” about adding fave pedals? I love the Catalinbread Ehchorec and while it’s modelled on the Helix line I find the knobs on the actual pedal easier to use - there’s only 4 for one thing! - and I don’t need to scroll through screens to do likewise with the modelled effect on the HXFX or Stomp.
    4. More of a tip this one. I can power both units (and the Echorec too #win) with a teeny Strymon Ojai and two Voodoo Labs CURRENT (not voltage!) adapters. Which means I only have one regular sized plug to power my entire pedalboard. This is very cool as the plugs Line6 attaches to both the Stomp and HXFX are freaking MASSIVE and take up a ton of space in a backpack all in their own.
    Hoping life is good and you’re doing well. Keep the videos coming too - it’s always a delight to hear/see you play!😊🎸👌

    Currently using HX Stomp + FS4/5 + JamMan (floor Looper) + Boss GT-6 (for floor MIDI Controller). I need to explore turning on and off different blocks assigned to the same switch at the same time. Looks like it could be a good way to expand the number of buttons on the Stomp "virtually" without having to add any actual buttons. Thanks

    Another thing the stomp/hx effects lacks compared to the helix is a vox preamp. I missed that one as soon as I sold the helix. Was much harder to do solo gigs without it

    Hey John have been loving your channel for some time and am finally going digital I think. I messed about with Positive Grid on my iPad but never could get great tones. I love fusion inspired sounds and was wondering if you felt the HX Stomp is up to trying to get the sound (but sadly not the hands and incredible mind) of Allan Holdsworth? On that point actually, would you be open to taking a paid commission to try and programme a few patches for me if I get the HX, of course Allan, but also a few others? Also, what do you prefer to amplify the HX - I dont have studio monitors at the moment but do have a Headrush active speaker (obviously mono)? And does the HX sound OK going through a traditional cab with the IRs switched off? Thanks in advance :-)

    I noticed a Mesa Nomad amp. I have the Mesa Nomad 100. I am deciding between the Ampero Stomp II or an older HX effects. I clearly see the Ampero II looks like a clone of the HX stomp. I really don't need modeling. I use a Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 for my Mesa and EVH 5150III EL34 50 heads. I send Two Notes Torpedo Captor 8 out to drive stereo fx. Then I use Two Notes Torpedo Cab M IR boxes in stereo. Parallel signal routing for certain scenarios is something I want for my rig. There is too many choices now.

    You don't even need to use 4CM. Just use an FX Loop block on either device, plug in Send to Input and Output into Return, and plug in to the appropriate Input. Two cables and done. And with one more cable you can use MIDI from the "core" unit to control the unit in the FX Loop (or vice versa). I don't think you'd lose any of the stereo image since most stereo goodness is post-amp/cabinet, and either device can handle that with ease. Here's a fellow YT'er explaining it: th-cam.com/video/wfg__ajbnTU/w-d-xo.html

    • @stevethebeeline44
      @stevethebeeline44 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      But you still get double latency using HxStomp and HxEffects regardless of going series or using FX Block to insert one device into the other, right? Guess there is no way around having two stages of A/D & D/A conversion happening when using two units.

    • @jnh73
      @jnh73 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevethebeeline44 unfortunately no way around it, though I'd wager for most Regular Joe cases the latency is a moot point. Just play some dang music for cryin' out loud. :)

      @@jnh73 4ms of latency using both is barely noticeable. Have both units set up with Bluguitar Amp1 on a pedal board and no latency issues worth noting. I know in DAW getting anything less than 10ms of latency and amp sims respond well! Yep all too easy to get obsessive about the small details. Looks like 1.38 meters from speaker gives 4ms delay. So just like putting your amp that far away again. 😂 you’d want to have some crazy bat hearing for that to be an issue. 👍
