  • The Dunker is a world-class facility for essential Underwater Escape Training (UET), simulating how to escape from a helicopter underwater.
Those undergoing the Dunker are briefed by staff, before strapping themselves into a mock cockpit which is then submerged in a swimming pool.
Forces News joined Apache pilots as they took part in the essential training - which they must complete every two years - at RNAS Yeovilton.

I'm a retired aircrew member in the USA and remember going through this training. I hadn't thought about the points of contact term in a long time! But then I realized that I still do it when I get in a car with another driver - I subconsciously feel out my points of contact for the seatbelt, door handle, locks, etc. to this day. Good video.

Did that while I was at Bovington, the instructor made us jump off the crane at the start, it's along way down, but an awesome experience

Yeah, everyone that works offshore does this training, but when it's "military special forces super solider training" it cost 100x as much for the exact same training.
When you do it in camo, you get magic powers to print an infinite amount of money...

I used to be fascinated by the later 70s/80s tv advert featuring a dunker with a crew ditching, expressed as a captured fly in an Airfix Puma being put through a similar drill.

Blotted my copy-book by making strenuous efforts to get out of the thing - before unbuckling my seat-belt.
Hated my first two dunks but quite enjoyed the others.

Great film, thanks. Things have changed a bit since John Noakes did it.

Looks nicer than our Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) - no air cylinders for we passengers.

My dive instructor had a small cylinder of Spare Air (the product name) attached to his dive vest. It held enough air to get you to the surface. I thought it was kind of silly until my main tank blew an o-ring and I lost everything in about two seconds.

Anybody working offshore such as supply vessels, anchor handlers, platforms and even personnel who has to travel to offshore installations for whatever reason, does this type of training.
Nothing hard, nothing scary, nothing unique or dangerous even.
Young, old can do it. Swimmers and those who can’t swim. Fit and fat.
    Big nothing.
Named BOSIET and training is available worldwide.
