  • In 1939, when Opal Lee was just 12, her family moved into a house that stood in an all-White neighborhood. They had lived at the home for just five days when a mob showed up and "tore it asunder." More than eight decades later, she owns the land again. Steve Hartman has her story in "On the Road."

If it was never actually owned by her family, that’s a little different. It wasn’t clear if this was the case. If it was owned by her family, unless her families it or it was foreclosed upon, it still should have been in the family, but I can’t imagine them paying the land the whole time and never lived there longer than a few days.

Waiting 80 years is a shame? How about waiting nearly 600 years and counting, if your native american? Or Till the end of time if you’re a Neanderthal? What amount of time has to pass before you deem it a “shame”?

Always make sure you accompany your grandparents in case they fall okay. Nobody was helping my grandma out of the car and she fell. Broke her collarbone, and they she passed away. She was healthy in her mind too. She wasn't even senile @88. It's sad. Because if my aunt and her daughter didn't leave her in the car for her to get out by herself, she'd probably still be alive and around 😢

I'm glad yall were able to, too! Like many, my great grandfather kept a shotgun for the sole purpose of scaring anybody off the property who didn't need to be there... But still somehow eventually lost the farm to the government (all the crops and animals) but still have all the land and houses on it and mostly all descendants agreed on not selling their portion of it to this day ❤ it's a shame with how quickly all the property that's been stolen and burned over the years.... Yet it takes them so long to build her new place on that land... because I've seen entire malls be built in less time. But a win's a win.

She just passed away, right before she was able to see true justice. Only reason she was helped at all was because her story went viral. Who knows if the stress lead to her death but she spent her final years, months, minutes fighting land developers.

The amount of Black American families that have similar stories is astounding. But we constantly get gaslit that by speaking up we’re playing victims 🤦🏾‍♀️. We ran to the north and other places from white terrorism NOT voluntarily migration. And the years of lost equity and wealth and poverty we experience today is a direct result of that. Even if someone wants to be obtuse and pretend white privilege doesn’t exist--the ability to not be terrorized in every area of life and attempts to better your quality of life for centuries based on being black says otherwise.

Who dealt with the ugliest parts of our country, and still managed to thrive and come out on top of it all. Women like Opal are the reason we cannot ever let our history be rewritten by those who have an agenda. This is one of those beautiful, full circle moments. Not to mention, Opal looks INCREDIBLE for 98. Holy crap. I pray to god I’m still as active and cognitively available as she is at that age. What an inspiration.

Your family was many steps ahead of black families in that your people came to America free but as to blacks relative to us we were enslaved

Someone should always help her in and out of the truck.

She might have refused the help and wanted to do it herself 😄

@@risemahadevaExactly. Sometimes they want to be independent. You have to leave them to do the things that they can still do by themselves. She was doing okay coming down by herself. Just slow and taking her time.

I’m overwhelmed by Opal Lee’s story and I’m thankful for habitat to do what’s right what’s just and fair i’m saddened and happy at the same time. Praise God for revealing things that are hidden that will come to the light and that takes action on our part as well. As a matter fact, we definitely have to be careful with paying our taxes on our property, my daughter had an incident where they had the wrong address and that happened twice and when she went down there, she had to pay her taxes and they act like it was her fault of sort, but in fact, the first time she straightened that out and it still happened so we have to be very careful. Love you, TH-cam family❤

Good for Opal, she deserves to have her house given back to her. Sad it took so long to happen. Opal, i hope you get at least another 10 years to enjoy it. Bless you.❤
