I have both the GM1 and a Q-S1 and personally prefer the Q because of the lens size and total weight. I can carry the camera with 3 or 4 lenses in a belt bag. Especially the Pentax 06 lens is very unique to the Q-line and doesn't really have anything comparable in the M4/3 range at that size and weight. The GM is way more capable in low light though.
Robin, Watched the entire video even though I will never own a gm-1 or the lens you have attached. I watched for the content and especially the photos. Really enjoy your photo walks whether you are trying out “gear” or just going for a “shutter therapy” walk.😊

Love your recent videos Robin. Feels like the old days when digital photography was so fun. The industry seems to have peaked a few years ago and is on the decline.
I've been shooting with that 18mm on my Oly e PL3, and it's insane how handy it is. The combo fits in my front jeans pocket, and with the extra space in my bag (just a regular work bag, I don't even need to bring a camera bag) I can keep a different lens just in case.
Hi Robin, nice little camera that gets the job done. I liked the street Art, beautiful colours. What I admire about you is that whatever camera you shoot with, you always produce great photos. Even cameras with some limitations you always work your way around it with your photography knowledge. Thanks for sharing Robin ☺️
I was tempted for a moment, because: 1) I use this very lens on my Fuji X-T20, and 2) I have a Panny GF-1... but then I realized that I have the very excellent Panny 20mm f1.7 in my bag. GF+1 x 20mm f1.7 is the combo I used to use on street photos while on trips. I now carry a GX7 iii because it has a selfie screen. 🙂 When I'm in town, I go back to the X-T20. Definitely thinking of finding my MFT system a new owner who gets to use it much more. It's an excellent compact system. No need to go for the smallest... GF-1 is a good size (small enough for pockets, big enough for hands).
Nice photos, Robin! I will find that 7 Artisans body cap lens for my PM1 and PM2. Because it performs well within the limits for street photography. Thanks!
I have both the GM1 and the GM5. I use my GM1 to portraits with the Pana/Leica 45/2.8 (that lens has stabilization). Have the camera in my palm and look at the screen and the objekt and wait for the moment. For other work, I use the GM5 because it has a viewfinder, especially with the fabulous Pana/Leica 15/1.7. Wonderful cameras for many types of work, especially travel.
Well done Robin. I do like that image quality. Something about the way those were processed brought on heavy daja vu. Sitting here in my work car confused lol. Anywho, love the video , great job.
Thanks Eric, appreciate the kind words. My processing is minimal. I guess the look of the lens was due to the imperfections, being less sharp, and has a bit of distortion and softer contrast.
I still say that you could have mud on your lens and come out with better street shots than most of us. I've been using the GM5 for a few years with the 42.5mm f/1.7 and 15mm f/1.7 but I just added the 9mm fisheye lens cap lens. I needed to add a grip to the front as well as a strap, after using the Panasonic GH4 without took much work, the GM5 is a handful being so small.
Hey Robin, I really like the way you process your street images: they are full of vibes and with great colours even with pretty bland raw output as the lumix do! Could you please make something to show how you get those results? You really should consider making a booklet of your best street photo images: you certainly have talent!
I love Panasonic designs and their lenses, but I have quite big hands and think I'd be struggling to use this little cutie. Wonderful shots, by the way, and KL looks like the most fascinating city.
Robin, can you put it next to EPL-7 with 17/2.8? To see what is the size difference vs the Oly advantage of IBIS, tilting LCD, AF (and even possible EVF if attached).
Greetings from Penang. It must be time to dust off my GM1 & hopefully the batteries still work. If they do I will try the Lumix 9mm around Georgetown. Thanks for another great video.
Great video Robin! love this lens and body combo! Crazy how the used prices for GM1 has jumped! I’m not going to say you don’t have an influence on my camera purchasing decisions but I have been actively looking for a GM1. Only looking! 😅
@@robinwong WEX Photo here in England are now saying that anything tiny with a reasonable-sized sensor are flying out of their shops before they even get to advertise them for long. Finally people are realising that Phones aren't cameras and possibly even that film cameras, the film and subsequent printing is now proving to be more expensive than the actual camera!
I think that if you just wanted a small camera that goes everywhere with a 35mm equivalent, and am not overly concerned with sharpness, then this may be an ideal combo. I have the "bigger brother" to the GM1 (the GF1) and may look into this lens (as I bought it with no lens for really cheap, like $50, but have been using adapters to adapt to DSLR and other ML lenses, but getting the 18mm or even the Olympus 17mm may make sense for a small compact street camera). I mean for $60 this can't be that bad and based on some of the sample images here and what I've seen online, I think it would totally be worth it. (I do agree the GM1 is a bit small and like the GF1 a bit better, although it is chunkier). I mean in some respects, setting the manual focus to infinity and just shooting is nice (of course you can do this with most lens/camera combos but I think the size of both the camera and lens here make it more enjoyable than say with typical APSC/DSLR which can stick out a bit and is more noticeable. Again, I think for just capturing street scenes where sharpness is not the priority necesarily, this does the job and is cheap.
Nice image quality from the lens from an older camera. I am still waiting to get my 56 mm 1.8 TTArtisan lens to arrive. Always liked the shooting styles of your video Robin. Keep up the good work!

Nice work Robin. I like the look of the images and yes the set up is super compact but I’m sticking to my trusty and only slightly larger LUMIX Lx100- it’s never disappointed.
It is indeed too small and handling is compromised. However there is something so amazing about making such a small camera yet having a full micro four thirds sensor and ability to change lens!
My hands are large with chunky fingers but I manage using my gm5 without too many issues. Always get pleasure pulling the camera out of my coat pocket and admiring how small this interchangeable lens camera is. I’ve been waiting for an upgrade but I’m at the point where even if Panasonic never release a new version l’ll just keep using the one I have. Love it! 😁

Hi Robin, do you know by any chance the next smallest MFT camera which is available and can be easier to buy than that GM1? People want sick money for that thing.
Robin or someone else, would you know what the equivalent focal length of this 7 artisans lens would be in a 35 mm lens? I'm looking for a compact camera like this with a lens equivalent to about 18-20 mm in a 35 mm lens. Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance! Great pics Robin..!
@@MishaG9 there are a couple available inexpensive Micro Four Thirds pancake lenses (each under US $100) in the range you want: 1. AstrHori 10mm f/8 II Micro Four Thirds lens 2. Olympus Fisheye Body Cap 9mm f/8 (Robin also reviewed it) They are 20mm & 18mm full-frame equivalent. Of course both are f/8 so you need sunlight. A more traditional but light Micro Four Thirds lens is Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens (18mm equivalent, 4.6 ounces/130 grams) Then your next problem is getting the tiny Lumix GM1 camera Robin has, expensive and hard to find used. Unfortunately Panasonic and Olympus OM haven’t been making small Micro Four Thirds cameras recently, mostly bigger semi/professional ones. Which is too bad as the smaller MFT lenses are suited for smaller camera bodies.
Have you thought about putting the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens on this body instead of this manual lens? It's almost la pancake lens with AF 🙂 Also, i feel like a display is much harder to use in bright sunlight, this would be amazing with an EVF Loved the video!
The display was perfectly fine. No EVF needed. Panasonic 20mm AF is sooooooooooo bad I'd rather just manual focus. Also, the lens diameter is too large for the small body of GM1, it looks funny.
The size of that front element is barely larger than a phone camera lens…just as I get to your ‘sub par lens’ section LOL…took the words out of my mouth. Yep, the lumix Leica 15mm, oly 17mm or the lumix 20mm would probably render better images. Even the 12-32mm lumix zoom that the gm was originally released with makes for a great combo. Cheers from down under 👍
The point is - the lens is crazy tiny, and cheap. All the other lenses produce better quality with AF of course, but they cost 10 times or more, and are much bulkier, especially on the tiny GM1. Can't beat the size.
Ricoh GRiiix overrated, what is the APS-C alternative, that is still in production.... seems most alternatives mentioned on TH-cam is always only available second hand
I have a few GM1. I use the Panasonic 14mm f2.5 as a compact setup. Or the Panasonic 20mm. The Panasonic gx850 makes for a compact setup, too. Thanks from toronto canada.
These lenses are also infinitely more expensive than the 18mm 7Artisans, and at totally different focal lengths. If you want a 35mm equivalent, this is not a bad choice.
On BHphoto now, the Pan 14mm is $200 USD, the 7Artisans 18MM is $60. I paid $150 CDN ($110 USD) used. And the Pan 14mm is much faster, auto focus, variable aperture, etc. I win ! Or not.
The Panasonic 12-32mm makes more sense; it's not THAT much bigger when the lens is closed, but it offers a ton more range, better bokeh (although not a lot more) it's stabilized and has autofocus. I don't think the size is an issue when it's opened during use.
Panasonic 12-32mm is a poor street shooting lens. The extra step to extend the lens before use will slow me down and cause me to miss important moments. I won't leave the lens extended, as I don't have the camera out all the time, with the lens extended and being inside the bag, it is the quickest way to destroy the lens. Also, 35mm is a nice focal length for street. 12-32mm requires you to "zoom" to 35mm, which is yet another step too many. As a casual shooting lens, 12-32mm is great. For street, I'd rather use Lumix 15mm F1.7, for example, but we all know how much that lens costs.
@@robinwong Personally, I'd prefer the 20mm f/1.7 II over the 15mm, it's even smaller and cheaper with the same aperture. I'd rather have that and the 12-32mm on me for a bit more versatility as an everyday carry setup in a pancake lens setup, both lenses are super pocketable, the 12-32mm extending it's size when in use doesn't bother me and I dont mind having to manually extend it each time either.
Because smartphones don't have 35mm setup, had too much shutter lag, screen lag, operation lag, horrible colors, bad handling, too much processing on images that make them look so fake and overbaked, well... Are these enough reasons?
Try moving the camera away from your eyes, then you will find more creative compositions. Shooting through viewfinder all the time creates boring images. Live view is the future.
Iphone doesn't have 35mm lens. Has too much lag on shutter release, and screen lag. There is too much fake processing happening in the images. Sure, enjoy your iPhone
@@robinwong lol i dont care for iphones cameras either really way to much processing over sharpening sony really looks the most natural to a real camera to me
Before anyone starts saying Nikon 1 system or Pentax Q is smaller, go check the dimensions. GM1 is indeed the smallest ILC digital camera.

36mm full-frame equivalent focal length (18mm x 2 for MFT sensor)
@@Damon_Mah Thanks a bunch, Damon! So that means I'd need a 10 mm or so lens, I'm afraid there's no pancake lens of that focal length.
@@MishaG9 there are a couple available inexpensive Micro Four Thirds pancake lenses (each under US $100) in the range you want:
1. AstrHori 10mm f/8 II Micro Four Thirds lens
2. Olympus Fisheye Body Cap 9mm f/8 (Robin also reviewed it)
They are 20mm & 18mm full-frame equivalent. Of course both are f/8 so you need sunlight.
A more traditional but light Micro Four Thirds lens is Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens (18mm equivalent, 4.6 ounces/130 grams)
Then your next problem is getting the tiny Lumix GM1 camera Robin has, expensive and hard to find used. Unfortunately Panasonic and Olympus OM haven’t been making small Micro Four Thirds cameras recently, mostly bigger semi/professional ones. Which is too bad as the smaller MFT lenses are suited for smaller camera bodies.
and there are its full-frame equivalent: Lumix S9
The only downside of course is how slow the lens is. Cool setup though.
are those images straight out of camera?
I expect not. Lovey images however the vivid punch makes me expect they have had post processing to the look. Robin can confirm and share details?
💯❤❤❤❤❤💯
It's a lens cap?
No. It is a BODY cap.
Might i suggest the Nikon 1 J1 or S1 w/nikkor 10mm f2.8 with its phase detect autofocus andhigh frame rate might be the perfect streat camera.
I have made several videos about Nikon J1, please watch if you have not done so.
Hardly can find GM1 in marketplace nowadays.
If you find it, you find it!
Have you thought about putting the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens on this body instead of this manual lens? It's almost la pancake lens with AF 🙂
Also, i feel like a display is much harder to use in bright sunlight, this would be amazing with an EVF
Loved the video!
The display was perfectly fine. No EVF needed.
Panasonic 20mm AF is sooooooooooo bad I'd rather just manual focus. Also, the lens diameter is too large for the small body of GM1, it looks funny.
@@robinwong That lens is f8, right? Tbh that means most of the scene is in focus anyway, I assume?
It's a spy camera...
I win ! Or not.
Why are you comparing a 14mm to 18mm? It is like comparing a cat to an orange, makes zero sense.
If this camera has only hdmi out in full hd.... people will buy it as webcam alternative...
That 20mm is soooooo slow in AF, I'd rather manual focus
To bad its not a 35mm camera! It's not film!
$600-$900 on ebay...
why not use your smartphone
Because smartphones don't have 35mm setup, had too much shutter lag, screen lag, operation lag, horrible colors, bad handling, too much processing on images that make them look so fake and overbaked, well... Are these enough reasons?
I hate having to look through the screen to take a photo. it needs a viewfinder. When will manufacturers learn this?
Try moving the camera away from your eyes, then you will find more creative compositions. Shooting through viewfinder all the time creates boring images. Live view is the future.
35mm?? the term "35mm" is related to 35mm-film-cameras. What is the meaning in using the term "35mm" in this video??
Watch the video, the answer is in it.
Samsung NX Mini is smaller I guess
Nope. Check the dimensions.
NX1 - 110.4 x 61.9 x 22.5mm
GM1 - 98.5 x 54.9 x 30.4mm
Samsung nx mini + 9mm lens 🙄
GM1 + 18mm is still SMALLER. And 9mm on NX1 Mini is NOT 35mm. You are missing the point completely.
too dark for me
If you are shooting street photography, under bright sun, how BRIGHT do you need the lens to be?
just use an iphone at this point
Iphone doesn't have 35mm lens. Has too much lag on shutter release, and screen lag. There is too much fake processing happening in the images. Sure, enjoy your iPhone
@@robinwong lol i dont care for iphones cameras either really way to much processing over sharpening sony really looks the most natural to a real camera to me
Its too dark and no bokeh 😅
For its price, 7Artisans 18MM is not worthwise to buy or for you to laugh so loud.
Your comment is so worthwise. I can't help but laugh about it so loud.
