  • On Nov. 14, 1992, the Fighting Irish met the Penn State Nittany Lions on a snowy Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium. Trailing 16-9 with 25 seconds remaining, Notre Dame quarterback Rick Mirer (‘93) threw a touchdown pass to Jerome Bettis to pull the Irish within one point. In the days before overtime, head coach Lou Holtz elected to go for the win. He drew up a two-point conversion play on the sidelines, and as they say, the rest is history. Mirer found Reggie Brooks (’93) in the back of the end zone, lifting Notre Dame to a 17-16 victory.
    The full game is available for a limited time only exclusively on The Fighting Irish TH-cam channel. For more games check out the full "The Vault: ND on NBC" playlist.

      @gmcneoplan84 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing is about Mirer, that dude couldn't ever get a full season of solid or good passing efficiency or consistently throw more TD passes than interceptions. Plus, he got sacked a lot from 1993-1996 (138 times).
      Offensive linemen Kevin Mawae, an aging but effective Ray Donaldson, he got Pete Kendall in 1996 but that was Mirer's last year in Seattle, and a few others were on those 1993 to 1996 offensive lines.
      Then there's the, it ain't like he didn't have the offensive supporting casts to help him from 1993 to 1996. He had the likes of Joey Galloway, Brian Blades, and an aging but still effective Kelvin Martin at receiver (1993-1994). He had an aging but effective John L. Williams at RB. Thee Chris Warren to hand off to at RB for four years. The underutilized Carlester Crumpler and Christian Fauria at tight end.
      Mirer's own offensive struggles, the stuff I just mentioned, and then his OC's and his quarterback coach didn't do a good enough job to help him advance as a consistent passer in Seattle. Boy, Mirer had it hard in Seattle from 1993-1996, just one winning season as a starter, sacked so many times, and etc.

      It was also the last time they were going to play for awhile, because Penn State was going to become a member of the Big 10 the following year. ND and Penn State were scheduled to play the next two years but Penn State had to bow out to accommodate their Big Ten schedule. Notre Dame also had lost to Penn State two years in row prior to this game, so it was great that they beat Penn State in such a dramatic way. Incidentally , Florida State was the replacement on the schedule for Penn State for the next two years which led to the game of the century.
