- Traveling by bus in India until 2001 was quite different from what we see today. Back then, only very basic buses, built on truck chassis and engines, were on the roads.
However, in 1998, Volvo introduced its first bus (B10LE) in India at the Delhi Auto Expo, and the story began to change from that point onward.
In this video, you'll see how Volvo buses transformed the way people travel in India.

You absolutely forgot mentioning KSRTC (Karnataka). The journey of Volvo buses in India began in 2001 when the company introduced the Volvo B7RLE in partnership with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC). The bus was an instant hit, and passengers were delighted by the high levels of comfort and reliability it offered.

Volvo became popular among south indians states when Karnataka Road Transport introduced its services to neighboring states under the brand "AIRAVAT". Today its hard to imagine KSRTC without Volvo buses.

Volvo really changed bus travel in India.
I was 9 or 10 years old when my dad had his first experience in a Volvo.
He went on and on about how great the ride was, how quick it moves and stops. Volvo buses were way more advanced than anything that was offered in India back then.
Fast forward to 2005, and I got the chance to board a volvo bus. It was everything and more than what I'd expected.
The ride comfort, the quiteness in the cabin, the speed, the braking, the space, the view from those seamless glass windows; everything was fantastic!!
To this day, I ensure to travel by Volvo buses in South India.

You really forgot to mention KSRTC and Sharma Transport which enabled Volvo enter into market. Followed by Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra governments.
You mentioned that First bus was launched in 1926 in India.
The bus which were launched in Coastal Karnataka Route was Mangalore to BC Road and followed were by Sri Manjunath Motors, CPC and Shankar Vittal as early as 1906 between Udupi- Karkala - Mangalore.

Volvo truly changed the way buses are used in India. Now they even operate 500+ kilometres on buses which is extremely tiring no matter what the quality of buses.
I dread bus travel even more that before now. No one should be unfortunate enough to get into a bus to travel such large distances.
These bus operators survive only because train tickets are hard to get.
700km by bus is still doable and not that exhausting

2007 - 2010 ke time se hi Volvo style waale TATA aur Ashok Leyland buses popular huye hai. Asli Volvo buses became popular since 2017.
Pseudo Volvo ya phir Volvo like TATA aur Ashok Leyland buses Aaj bhi chalte hai.

Why domestic makers not shifting to rear engine buses? Now a days highways are fine. Suspension system is secondary, first if the engine was front mounted you would lost sleep because of the sound compared to rear engine. Even it is an AC bus.
