    Great video! Thank you! The under spin tip has been massive for me, especially when volleying hard heavy spin balls

    brilliant video !
    Clear , logical, decent, makes sense! the thing with the tension gets a lot of debate and confusion. of course there will be different types of tension in your hand for different types of volleys (Stop vs softer one vs a put-away aggressive volley) .
    Amateurs in the park say "oh, it ddnt bounce off my racket", when they hit frame/next to frame, and then saying "I should have squized harder" . but obvously they did not know that the ball would be hitting the half-frame before hitting it, so tensioning up before would be not so good if the ball would have landed on their center strings. :)

    Great video..Please next video try to show us how to make the correct forehand volley. Definitely is the volley one that most of players are struggling it most of the time (me includding), because it is not natural and it's more complicate than the backhand volley, that is more natural...

      Hi Miguel, Thanks so much! I agree the FH volley is harder than the BH, and this is a great topic that I will address in a future video. Thanks again, John

    I am way too rigid when volleying. I tend to bounce hard shots out. I will be practicing these strategies. I also am poor at poaching. Would love to see some drills on how to build anticipation and movement.

    I often struggle with volley's that are coming straight at me, and its rare to see online coach demos showing technique to practice these volleys...

      Hi Christopher, Great suggestion! It's in the cue for a topic in the near future. Thanks, John

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If it comes straight at you slowly, there would be no problem, as you would just shift position to hit either BH or FH volleys. If it comes fast, the quickest reaction is using the BH volley, even if the ball comes slightly to your FH side because you won't have time to shift slightly to hit a FH volley. Even if you could, your FH volley would be too cramp and could cause elbow problem.

    Good video, thanks! What about the "get your elbows out away from you while in ready position" tip? That one helped me as a novice, but I'd like to know your toughts. Cheers!

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Don, thanks for your question. The idea of flaring the elbows originated with Vic Braden back in the 70’s. While it does achieve the objective of minimizing the backswing, it also compromises the ideal technique. That’s why you never see a pro or high-performance player use this technique or style on the volley. Best, John

    Really useful advice as ever!
    What about higher volleys above the head? Often I get high volleys which end up going long. Also, is it possible to play a double handed volley as sometimes I do that for stability?

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks...glad the instruction is useful to you. High volleys: Move the feet, minimize the swing. Two hands: Not a big fan. How many great (or even good) two handed backhand volleys have we seen in pro tennis in the modern era? I can't think of more than 2. Once you know and implement the KEY element of the one-handed BH volley, you will never play with two hands! Best, John

    Hi John! I´ve notice that you bend yor wrist when hiting backhand volleys! (not when your teaching, but when you are showing drills) Is that correct? thankyou for such a great lesson!

      @@PerformancePlusTennis Sorry for the late answer. Between 6:24and 6:32 in timeline. Watching very carefully I noticed that it is not a wrist bend is more a supination snap, Am I correct?

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eduardomt3823 Hi Eduardo, Thanks for getting back to me. Great observation! That first volley a6 6:24 starts with the racquet face completely facing up. This is a longer, more advanced preparation that is instinctive when I have time to make a bigger move on the ball. I do not recommend this for most players on a typical volley. But to answer your question, the movement from this position to contact is 100% shoulder, with no intention to supinate or use the wrist in any way. I hope this is helpful to you. Kindly, John

  • @tomsd8656
    @tomsd8656 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The only two "myths" I had heard are punching the volley and keeping your racquet head up. But I think you interpreted "punch" too literally, as most people understand what that action is like. Racquet head up applies to the ready position since all the balls will have to clear the net before they get to you. It would be inefficient to have the racquet head below the net while preparing to intercept the ball with volley. It didn't mean that you pick up volleys at the shoe laces with racquet head up.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What about turning sideways? I've heard that one forever. Keeping the racquet head up / above the hand at the same throughout the volley? Flat volleys? Plenty of coaches teaching that. Squeeze the handle/ grip? Plenty of instruction on this as well...???

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @PerformancePlusTennis I've been taught to keep the wrist firm and don't let the racquet head drop, but that was explained in the sense that if your wrist is loose at contact, then you have no control of the racquet head, and the volley would be shot. But none of my coaches had said to turn side way or any of the other things you mentioned.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Keep the wrist set, but with a soft hand. It will improve your feel and touch. The hand will firm up naturally without thinking about it! Best, John @@tomsd8656

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @PerformancePlusTennis Yes, that's the one thing all coaches emphasize, relax grip. In fact, I had not heard anyone saying to tighten the grip for the volley, only firm wrist.

    • @PerformancePlusTennis
      @PerformancePlusTennis  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In my area, it is common to hear coaches say "squeeze the handle on contact". @@tomsd8656
