I have both Synology and QNAP. As a general user, I found the mobile apps from QNAP are more polished, and updated than the Synology apps. I have more controls on Qfile Pro than the DS file app, while this might not be important for some users however for me and the family, we like to access our photos/videos via our tablets, so this was a big factor in using QNAP more.

Thanks to my research and coming across your channel/content I've now had my TS-464 for just over a week now...and I love it!
I was originally planning to get the WD-PR4100, but since hearing about their recent hacking fiasco, and how some could no longer access their data, I ran for the hills...needless to say, I'm aware QNAP has had similar shortcomings as well...nonetheless weighing customer support, hardware (tech), performance, Apps etc. I have no doubt that I made the right choice. And ironically I loaded it up with x4 WD drives! 😝 - Keep up the grand work! 👌🏾

Can you please do a video on sleep states for NAS devices: compare which ones will readily go into hard drive spin down when idle, and whether they keep waking for no particular reason and spinning up drives regularly. Disk spin down is good for less energy use, and for preserving HDD life. Synology versus QNAP home use models apply, such as TS 464, DS 923+.

IMHO QNAP have sufficiently address the deadbolt issue and from all indications I can see have learned from their mistake. I think it a bit unfair after a year of a proven track record to make it the number one item (hey that's me though). For my use and some of my collogues they are the best think in NAS right now. I used to think their offerings were just too much, but now it seems that have everything for everybody. Our friends at Synology could learn a bit from it as well. Great points on Hero, spot on!

They addressed this issue after it hit its users. But their level of negligence before the incident is in my opinion not acceptable. They are selling devices people use to store their private data, potentially important data. You can expect an IT administrator to do regular backups, but consumers will hardly do that, when they just bought what they believed is an extra level of reliability and/or security.
Synology might be worse, I have no exp with them, but Qnap is bad.

@@UKCG_2 I'm not trying to be funny, but you can seriously doubt whatever you want. It doesn't change reality. The audio is FINE. So if you're experiencing a problem, it is ABSOLUTELY YOUR EQUIPMENT. Full stop. If the recording were faulty, we would all be seeing the same problem.
If it were a problem with TH-cam's server, you would be experiencing buffering, not out of sync audio. The video and audio don't arrive separately. It's sent in an MP4 container which contains both streams (audio and video). Either the container packets make it to your machine or they don't. There's no in between.

I bought QNAP once. I will never buy QNAP again. Worse piece of equipment I ever owned. In short be smart don't buy QNAP.

  • @michaelutech4786
    @michaelutech4786 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I strongly suggest to stay away from Qnap.
Reason 1) Qnap hardware has serious flaws, that Qnap does not only not fix but also continues to sell despite knowing they are there. I had to solder a cable onto the mainboard to make the thing work because some component degrades over time. The disk controller also appears to degrade, which results in HDDs not being (properly/reliably) recognized after some 1-2 years of use. The HDMI output stops working after some time. I experienced these three problems with two different Qnaps (451+).
Reason 2) Qnap software has a long history of security flaws. This might be acceptable for home/office use, when you don't expose your data using the cloud features, but since these cloud features are heavily advertised there is a good chance that you're being left out in the rain.
Reason 3) Out of 8 HDDs im using in 2 Qnaps, Qnap reports on average 4 HDDs per year as defective (via smart). In the beginning I followed the advice to replace them. Later I just ignored this and half of the disks self-healed. In 30 years of working with computers I had a total of maybe 2-3 HDD failures (before Qnap). And the disks I use in the Qnaps are brand disks with a good reputation.
Reason 4) Despite Qnap not caring at all for my experience with the hardware (obvious from 1), they claim that the NAS can only use up to 8GB RAM, which makes one of the most interesting features of Qnap (Container/Virtualization Station) nearly useless, using 16GB is one of the few things that worked without any problems.
Reason 5) Most Qnap hardware is pretty vanilla PC hardware. Despite that, Qnap does their best to keep you from installing alternative OS. You can work around that, but without a monitor, I don't want to go that route.
I bought the second Qnap when the first one started to fall apart, so that I have a backup and fallback. At the time I really liked my Qnap, but seeing that the problem is not that I'm unlucky and that both hard- and software is just not up to snuff for my requirements (which are basically having a reliable device to store my data and since it's there let some services run in containers or vms), I will never buy a Qnap product again.
This is also not an issue with a single generation of devices, the problem is the general attitude of Qnap towards its customers, at least the consumer segment. That might be different for enterprise customers, but as a company I would never buy enterprise critical hardware from a company like Qnap either.
All that being said, I'm actually really sad that I had to come to that conclusion, because these devices are really nice, feature wise. They cover nearly everything you might want to do with a home automation/NAS/media center and cloud solution. The admin interface is well made. The thing is packed full of features. But all that is mute if you cannot rely on the device - and you absolutely cannot rely on a Qnap NAS, not unless you are prepared to loose your data and the functionality the NAS provides at any moment in time.

@@km3481 Simply stating that my experience is "untrue" is ignorant to say the least. But I can assure you in my 7 years with multiple QNAP products, the security is lackluster in comparison to Synology. Maybe your experience and use case is different, which can also be true.

    • @km3481

@@Kclerie I have seen with really old QNAP NAS''s bot issues were definitely an issue to address.. Sorry to be a bit harsh in my comment, but they have been solid devices from my experience. The only other issue I ran into was the firewall blocking access to it because of one virus company and the way it queried the network. If I look at a hardware firewall log and see what exactly is going on, they seem to behave just fine compared to everything else.
