    Accidentally stumbled on your video in my recommended page and being my narcissistic self, I knew I had to watch because, hey, it’s a video about my country from an outsider’s point of view. I extremely love how this video is educational and you took the time and effort to talk about our brief history! The thing with lots of laws in Singapore, it comes with a logical reasoning that can’t be really argued against. Sure it may seem excessive, ridiculous and people may still be upset about some of the laws we have - no eating/drinking in trains, cars being expensive, lack of free speech, etc, but such laws are in placed to keep Singapore clean, to minimise traffic jams and delays (Singapore is small) and to prevent hate speech from being thrown around. Haven’t we been taught, “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all?”. But all of that aside, such a high quality and informative video and I deeply respect the obvious time and effort put into creating this video :)

      Same. A lot of times, it's hard to watch a video about Singapore because they come from a negative angle about our drug laws, petty chewing gum laws, lack of free speech, anti-homosexuality laws... but there's a results-based system behind all of that. For the homosexuality part, the law is actually going through changes right now. As I was saying, this positive video about Singapore is awesome

I guess it's not the problem of free speech, things just work differently here from other typical western countries. If people don't trust their government in the UK, maybe it's because the government itself is untrustable..

      @@karimsonglin8841 i dont know why people complain so much. you can bring chewing gum into singapore if in small amounts. I am happy that there are no drugs. the government is doing things, even if somethings are slow. Our MRT is good (people keep complaining that it breaks down but its much better than other places). If you oppose the government, make a party instead of just ranting and shouting at a park. our food is good and can be cheap. I think singapore should only improve on environmentalism laws and regulations and getting rid of anti- homosexuality laws.

    Thank you for this wonderful introductory video on Singapore.
    I would like to comment a little on the point about freedom of speech (or, more generally, expression). At the end of the day, I think it boils down to what is included in the term 'expression'. In Singapore, freedom of expression is restricted by laws that protect the larger community's safety and security. So, expressions that are irresponsible, are irrational, and intentionally propagate falsehoods are excluded, i.e. heavily penalised. Because these sorts of expressions, if allowed to take place freely, will harm and tear apart the community.
    Personally, I think this is a better version of freedom of expression. Why would you advocate for a version of freedom of expression that permits, for example, hate speeches? As long as you are a rational and responsible person that can tell truths from falsehoods, then there is nothing to fear about speaking your mind in Singapore.

      Edib3 Last Name on point! We also recently introduced the Protection From Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act, which allows government to order websites to take down or correct information deemed to be factually misleading. Even then, there are mechanisms that allow the poster to cheaply and swiftly challenge the government’s order in a special court set up for this purpose.

    • @dzakir_
      @dzakir_ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Rxx x As far as i know, a way for the government to counter corruption is by having a high paying salary. The highest paying job in singapore are ministers so for people to be a minister takes years of education and not forgetting the high competition. So if youre a minister, means you are highly qualified, thus, things such as exploitation of policies will unlikely occur

      A lot of people might argue that restricted freedom of speech isn’t really freedom of speech. Although not enforced there has been cases of people being arrested for speaking against/ having different ideas from the government mostly Politicians of such. Also if you get on the bad side of the government, they would do whatever legally possible if not take things as far as they can as long as it does not cause a big backlash from the public to fuck your life up. My uncle has participated in an opposition political party once in his lifetime and has since been banned from any government related work opportunities E.g. teaching( as most schools are government owned) and denied full Citizenship only until recent years and it is considered that he has gotten off lightly

    • @keteru3453
      @keteru3453 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rxx x what I meant from opposition party is not in the sense of in opposition of the government, it just the name we give other political party that is big enough to be relevant. Singapore has been ruled by the same political party for 50 years so any new rising political parties not necessarily with opposing ideas but maybe also constructive ones are just known as opposition parties ((if I’m not wrong)

    • @keteru3453
      @keteru3453 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rxx x Honestly I don’t know. I am not really kept up with the whatnots but as far as I know, the currently ruling party has done a phenomenal job for the people and the country although there have been some incidences that got some people’s faith in them wavering after the death of our founding father, claiming that they have lost their vision.

    Thank you for your kind comments. Our survival is probably what drives us, and thankfully, our founding leaders worked resolutely to enable us to achieve what we’ve achieved, thus far. However, like everywhere else, we’re not perfect. Hopefully, we’ll continue to grow be a sustainable city where people can live respectfully, harmoniously and peacefully together. As you’ve rightly mentioned, we have almost no natural resources (except human resources) and are literally dependent on others in many ways. This will always present challenges to us. For the sake of our future generations, I hope we’ll continue to mature and be positively contrarian to preserve the tremendous socioeconomic geopolitical infrastructural that we have.

    Honestly, I really enjoyed this video. Your comments about Singapore are well weighted and you don't assume things base on your own values (like a lot of westerners do, no offence). You actually took the time to talk to locals and find out what they think about the "rules" in Singapore and the rationale behind them. You've also learnt so much about Singapore in just a week which was really impressive. Things we Singaporeans are sometimes oblivious to or take for granted.
    On a side note, about freedom of speech, I would say Singapore has freedom of speech, just not freedom of hate speech. If the things you say can be backed up by evidence, then you can say anything you want.

    We trust our govt because it has delivered. For over 50 years. So it would be irrational or illogical to distrust the govt. As you noted, the SG govt plans long term, and this is a luxury that few other democratically elected govt has. Most democratic govt can only plan up to the next election. It makes them short-sighted, and plan for the short term, and to get the best "deal" they can get from the electorate in the present.
    BUT.... it is impossible to explain SG govt to a UK or US or other citizen of Western democracies because there are no (are there?) long ruling, stable government in the west (that has successfully planned long term) for a citizen of the west to identify with and understand.
    So SG and the SG politics comes across as weird or exotic or unreal or some distortion of reality. It works against all your understanding of how the world is supposed to work. And that will either freak you out or pique your curiousity.
    [If it helps, we don't understand Brexit.]

      Absolutely agree (as a fellow Singaporean). However, the government should be a bit more relax about opposition parties and some of the tactics used to suppress them are morally doubtful and not necessary. The opposition parties, as far as I can see, have not come up with a good alternative and so most people will still support PAP anyway.

    • @hoifeikwok7457

      @@AndyMBurgess And Brexit may not be a bad thing. I personally will prefer a looser cooperation with EU (a bit like the ASEAN). EU now consists of countries with vastly different economies and needs. Trying to enforce the same policies will be too burdensome. Brexit is now a mess because the remainers and remainer MPS will not accept the vote and do not believe the country can survive out of EU. Have a bit more self belief. Singapore can make it out of Malaysia. Why can't UK? Setting aside, the problem of UK, as a democracy, is that political parties are trying to please the electorate rather than doing what is right for the country in the long term. You can see it in the current election campaign, even the country is deep in debt, every party offers to fund this and fund that, very often by borrowing. Singapore's constitution will not allow that. Any government must balance their book over the term (from one election to another). This helps to prevent politicians to bribe the electorate. (as a Singaporean living in UK)

    Great video you did really summarize Singapore. Hope you have another chance to visit to do more videos here. And here is some explanations to some of your doubts in Singapore.
    Since Lee Kuan Yew was top Cambridge trained lawyer, he used the rule of law to drive some of the changes in behavior and values. And many of the laws were introduce when Singapore was very much third-world, had bad habits and was very poor. So there are tough laws on littering, keeping the place clean including not eating and drinking inside MRT. The high taxes on cars is one way to "tax the rich" and channel the revenue to building world-class public transport for rest of population. There is also high "sin tax" on alcohol and cigarettes to discourage these habits.
    On trust of government is delivered in sort of empowering way. Unlike elsewhere, like UK, with high income taxes and "trusting their government" to redistribute well. Singapore focus on self (Individual) financing instead state redistribution - The CPF is compulsory comprehensive savings plan for retirement, healthcare, housing and even tertiary education for their children. This forced savings of 37% monthly wages of limit SGD 6,000 per month wages helps to finance the key personal financial obligations, enabling relatively low income & corporate tax rates. Individuals have personal freedoms within limited choice to choose where to allocate their money.
    Lastly on freedom of speech, there is need to provide facts and evidence rather than opinions. There is against law to criticize another race and religion, you can say good things. This help maintain social harmony in multi racial and religion society. And more importantly, keeping religion and race outside of politics. I think this aspect is often overlooked by visitors to Singapore, looking at the greenery, buildings, food, shopping... is one of few places with different religious places share the same street(s).

    Really well presented. Loved the footage and thought your discussion was well balanced - Regarding Garden City - There is a wonderful book Garden City Singapore - The Legacy of Lee Kuan Yew. Everything was planned to provide beauty and shade. Consideration was also given to green 'corridors' to enable wild life to move around without feeling exposed. They even considered constructing a flame around street lights for plants to grow up, but this was found to be uneconomical when the streetlamp needed maintenance or to be replaced. There is a particular kind of vine which was named the Lee Kuan Yew creeper. When you see vines hanging down from buildings or growing up gantries holding up expressways, it is no random coincidence. They tried many vines out before finding one which could withstand the fierce heat and still grow up concrete. Similarly with trees, for example down the middle of roads and alongside pavements you will see many 'rain trees'. These were identified because of the large canopy and shade they provide. Once you begin looking you might also notice that plumeria (frangipani) are planted at cross roads where their flowers provide welcome colour. I'm in awe of this Island and of the work and thought that has gone into making it what it is in such a short space of time. I've spent nine happy years here.

I would just like to make some minor clarifications though. The haze situation is indeed bothersome but it doesn't happen every year. The last time it happened was 4 years ago. Thankfully the haze only lasted for about a week or so this year and the rain washed it away quickly.
    Singaporeans respect LKY a lot because he dedicated his whole life to Singapore and we owe our success to him and his team of ministers. But you won't see any monument dedicated to him in Singapore as he was against personality cults, believing that they impede the growth of the country.

    From my point of view:
    Singaporeans are known to be “kiasu” and “kiasi” which means afraid to lose and die. Because of it, we are easily satisfied with what we have so as long as we are doing fine. The government has been doing fine, so most of us are contented.
    In terms of laws, i think that those laws are necessary. I would chose a clean place to live in than to be able to chew gum or eat and drink on the mrt. I guess it’s the same with a lot of the people I know.

But you’ve managed to capture all the good and many of the bads in a very comprehensive and visually pleasing video 🤩. If u ever come back, u should totally talk to more locals!

      It's funny, we consider to align with the West and understand them but they don't understand our rules that we don't even give thought to.

    Glad that you liked singapore. Hope you enjoyed the amazing variety of food available here. We don't have a lot of natural wonders to offer and Andy, We're quite far from perfect, but we try to make the most of what we have and try to move forward in a way that we will not become obsolete on the world stage.
