  • A video that surfaced on the Ukrainian Telegram Channel RAGNAROCK PRIVET shows a unit of alleged Ukrainian special forces assaulting a Russian position despite having a Russian Hind overhead.
The Telegram Channel does not give any specific background information about the footage and has not disclosed any location or involved unit so everything we can say about this video comes from the footage itself.
What we get from the video is that It seems that Ukrainian forces where in the offensive in this particular engagement advancing towards a previous spotted Russian position in a what appears to be a small forest or bigger treeline.
The men seem to be very well eqipped with suppressors and scopes on their AK type assault rifles and their overall behaviour looks very professional and organized.
They seem to have good communication during the engagement and make good use of concealment.
Even as a Russian Hind helicopter appeared they stayed focused and every men did his part.
At the end of the video you can see what appears to have been the decision to break contact but we can not confirm this for sure.
    Video surfaced on: t.me/s/ragnarockkyiv

Exactly every round they fire for suppression = one Russian soldier ducking his head and finding cover. If the suppressive fire is going by them even 10 yards away they will hear the crack and at that point you can’t tell if they are laying accurate fire and you definitely don’t want to stand there and find out. So you find cover and usually suppress back, suppressive fire can provide 0 incoming bullets from the enemy if suppressive fire is effective enough.
What is so hard for people to figure out it isn’t a waste of bullets, them suppressing through foliage, through concealment etc the bullets will continue to travel and become effective. I don’t think people realize how back and forth gun fights are. You have to take advantage of any second the enemy stops engaging with suppressive fire, forcing enemies in cover or while enemies are engaging “riskier” and does not usually provide effective suppressive fire if the enemies are suppressing first. Unless you are laying down direct fire at the enemies and by direct fire I mean accurate firing toward enemies persons. Like you said so easy for people to judge at their safe home but reality is grim and for them this isn’t a movie you have to take advantage of every situation if you stop engaging at a close distance from the enemy they won’t show mercy they will lay down heavy suppressive fire the only time they won’t is if logistically they are short on ammo supplies but they typically would wait for result before assaulting.
FYI I'm merely describing the effectiveness of suppressive fire there is many variables and situations that can lead to using suppressive fire it is by far not the most effective strategy in combat obviously, far range ordinance and armored vehicles provide more effective abilities than merely suppressive fire. Its entirely dependent on the AO and their objective in the AO, are they merely there to push the enemies back? Are they there to clear out an outpost? Many variables and suppressive fire is not always the best option but from the looks of the video its entirely impossible to determine whether their strategy was proving effective. Did they have logistical operation behind their frontline push? Was this really an Assault or perhaps a flank from enemy contact? Impossible to say but like I said I was merely describing the hypothetical abilities of effective suppressive fire.

11B Infantry here. We would have had a very complicated engagement here in this situation as its flat ground and lots of trees and shrubs for cover (unlike middle east landscape of rocks , hills and mountains). We had Pred Drones in the sky and the RPV controllers would radio the enemy position that is firing at us as we had zero visibility of where enemy fire was coming from ("native" fighters of the land knew their territory well to the point modern small arm weapons against them were useless). The Ukrainian SF did a good job here and surely using known textbook maneauver's but I cannot tell if they are moving away from direct fire as I can tell by this situation, they were fired upon by the Rus first and got caught and trying to change positions as the Rus have probably already communicated to send light armored vehicles and order direct fire to enemy troops. A copter was sent to validate the situation and set guessed coordinates of the Ukrainian SF movements. This is a modern war for both modern soldiers on both sides. I hope this ends soon and that Ukraine keeps its borders.

If you listen closely, you hear cracking bullet sounds (like a whipping crack, different from the popping or blasting sounds) - this sound you can only hear if someone is shooting at you or at your direction. That means they are under fire at the moment, so returning the fire with a bit of urgency can be understood. For sure no waste of ammo or whatsoever!

It is not a waste of ammo cause suppressing fire allows your troops to move with less possibility of being shot (cause you fire at enemy and it disallow him to spend enough time for a good shot) + if you fire in their direction there is always a chance of hitting someone. As a British veteran, this clip looks like a "fire and maneuver" attack. What appears to be a waste of ammo is in fact suppressive fire designed to keep the enemy's heads down while a you move forward to contact using a "bounding" technique. They could also be laying down suppressive fire to support another platoon or section who may be outflanking the enemy position from the left or right, ( they could have just been dropped in by the helicopter ) usually sustained machine gun fire which sweeps in front of the flanking force is the best way to do this. The enemy can't react until they are being engaged at close quarters by gunfire, grenades, or a hairy arsed soldier with a bayonet. These Ukrainian's look very professional and tactically aware, I suspect they have had some very good instruction from one of the Western countries ( possibly British ) unlike the Russians who seem to cling to the spray and pray method. This is why the Ukrainian's will always win in a traditional battlefield situation and why the Russians ( who usually stand around like retards ) are essentially cannon fodder.

I keep noticing in the comments that some people have been bringing up the fact that some people think that these soldiers are “wasting ammo”. Notice how the soldier in the video is fighting his AK in semi automatic? This is a clear indication that he’s firing his gun in that way in order to suppress the enemy through ‘suppressive firing’ instead of firing his weapon in fully automatic which would’ve be a clear indication of him wasting ammo. Besides, this is a war, and surprising a enemy force with suppressing fire can make the difference of staying alive.

For the the idiots who think they're wasting ammo: it's called "suppressive fire" the purpose of suppressive fire isn't necessarily to hit your target (It'd be nice ofcourse if you did) but it's mostly just to make the enemie stay behind cover, to make em scared to fire back so they'll keep thier heads down and not shoot back and that means that the enemie is "suppressed" when an enemie is suppressed friendly soldiers can get closer to them because they can shoot back and eventually take them out. "When reading first-hand accounts of modern
combat one will find that the moment in which one
side achieves operational dominance over the other
is often described in terms of sound: the force whose
roar of gunfire is drowning out its opponent’s
has almost certainly one the upper hand. In more
traditional terms, the force with the highest volume
of fire is more likely to dominate."
