    Stryper was my first show. Saw them in Chicago at the Bismarck Theater in 1985 (I think). We played covers of a couple of their songs ( I played guitar and sang, I had a high voice back then). They were great. Armored Saint opened and we're pretty good but man Stryper killed. My best friend John got a Bible they threw out. I remember they had stacks of marshalls but I got to the front of the stage and Oz was actually using a small Peavey combo miked up! All that sound from just a little Peavey. Lol. Edit: thanks for bringing them up. So far Razorfist, Ben Eller, and you have given them some love.

    I'll have to check out Stryper again. I've been into heavy metal since I was a little kid, and about the time I got turned onto Stryper I had really gotten into a lot heavier stuff, so I didn't give it as much of a listen as I probably should have. I listen(ed) to everything pretty much, but there are some really heavy Christian bands out there for people who are religious and love the heavy stuff. Bands like Deliverance, Mortification, Vengeance Rising, Tourniquet, are all really great heavy Christian bands even if you're not into the religious part of it. I'll have to go back and hear some Stryper again. Thanks for the lesson, as always, Dave!

    Their newer albums aren’t quite the glam metal albums that I love the most, but they are crushingly technical and sound so great still. Sweet’s guitar tone is super unique too.

    • @mattnunnelly6321
      @mattnunnelly6321 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also funny you should mention George Lynch - he and Michael sweet have released some music together over the years which is an embarrassment of technical prowess.
      Wild to think that a ton of the lead parts are played by Sweet while singing.

  • @BLeeFAFO

    Great band overall. I was fortunate to see and meet the original band a few times, Most recently in 2012 as one of my old friends was working for them.
    Oz is an immensely talented and down to earth, Seriously humble and nice dude. Tim and Robert are sweethearts as well and great players. Michael, Good front man, Singer and writer. Unfortunately I can't say much good beyond that for him.
    This isn't the place to bash on people so I won't.
    They were always a great sounding unit live.
    Perry from Firehouse is their bassist now I believe of the last few years.

    It takes guts to do Christian metal. While too lazy to pull out my vinyl and verify, I think the early records that were so heavy sounding were produced by Michael Wagener. It doesn't hurt to have such a guy in your camp if you want to come off crunchy. Christian metal. A genre oxymoron if there was ever one. Rebellious, but not too rebellious I guess.
    The big hair MTV thing from the USA did not really take hold here in NZ when I was a Gen X'er teen. We saw all the make up, perms, lace and pantihose, posing, bottom wiggling, i.e., proto-twerking by squealing blokes, and thought "WTF is that sh!t all about?". We went directly from AC/DC and Iron Maiden to Metallica and Megadeth etc. Then sometimes Soundgarden etc (lots got into techno and rave stuff too, especially the formerly metal females if they were still out in the wild).
    The hair bands had some very cool guitar riffs though, e.g., Dokken etc. If only CD players had a button to mute the vocals, cut out the cheesy choruses, and then loop the good riffs and solos hehe.
