How to Make Fruit Fly Cultures!

- Let's face it- fruit fly cultures only last a few weeks. Instead of buying a new one every time, you can make your own medium to keep the culture going!
Ingredients:
500mL beer
100mL vinegar
200g potato flakes
1/4cup corn meal
1tsp Brewer's yeast
Music: www.purple-planet.com & www.bensound.com/royalty-free...

With the fruit boys
With 40 drunk fruit boys

all ten thousand of them 😂

*"Hi, Welcome back to cooking with Emily. Today we will be making some scrumptious fruit flies with a side of mashed potato flakes and beer."*
Okay, but why would I actually eat that?
Because you're weird?
@@ametsunami4070 because you can’t take a joke
Lol
Emily is a 5 star Michelin chef….for reptiles
I don't have anything that eats fruit flies but I'm watching anyway because this is interesting
same
I only own mammals.
She left me full of questions like how tf do u feed anything a fruit fly and tf do u move them from one container to another
Same although I used to have a bearded dragon 😭

Or you could make a culture by leaving out a bowl of oatmeal stacked under some other dirty dishes for a couple of weeks in your room and forgetting about it and then they will buzz in your face when you are sleeping and then your parents get angry at you..... Oops, never mind, don't do that.
Blossomness Studios best comment
Then the flys will rebel and attack and then start a war with mini sticks and then somehow kill people and oops I’m dead
omg I ate half a melon and thought I had thrown it out, it had fallen under my bed I still don't know how, I was vegan and eating a lot of fruit but that happened. I couldn't understand why there were fruit flies everywhere, it was the worst LOL I never told my parents, they just kept complaining and blaming the hot weather lol Found the melon, threw it into compost bin, and it took WEEKS to get rid of the fruit flies lmao. I would recommend if doing the transfering the flies to pots to do it outside the home haha they are stubborn at leaving a home even with no food source O.o Unless they are the flightless sort used in this video (phew!)
LMAOOO 😂😂😂
Lol it's hilarious flys eat me to death aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh
I bred fruit flies for 300 level genetics class! So much fun!
Now they only visit me when I've got a glass of wine... junkies.
I love the sound of a the mixing and The tapping
Me too
I personally have no use for fruit flies but I get infestations from time to time because I raise hermit crabs and they occasionally breed in there. I make my own traps and Ive found they go crazy for coconut water a few days old to which I add a few drops of dish soap. I just leave the original container out and they drown themselves in it like nothing else. They love it. I thought this might help kill your escapees in your work space in a non toxic way plus the coconut water might be something to try sans dish soap sometime in your mix.
This is so helpful! Thank you so much haha!
Could coconut oil in water work as well?
@@JaayBear Fruit flies basically just love rotting food. A cheaper solution than buying coconut water or using your expensive coconut oil is to fill a bowl (wider is probably better than deep) with apple cider vinegar, a few chunks of leftover fruits or vegetables, and a drop of dish soap (soap is used to break the surface tension of the water, otherwise they are so light that they can just sit on top of the water and fly away when they're done). Mix it together and leave it out for a week or so. The fruit flies will kill themselves in that tasty soup you made them. I had a fruit fly infestation and this worked like a charm. Obviously you have to find the source of the fruit flies and get rid of the new larva first, but this soup will catch the stragglers.
@@JaayBear Those are two very different things. Coconut water is the juice in the center of a fresh coconut. It is juice with low sugar and similar electrolytes to ours except for sodium. That's what makes it such a great drink for us if you get a good brand. The fruit flies like it a bit turned or fermented.so a few days open at room temperature. If you want it to attractions sooner add a half tsp of vinegar. It still takes a few days togetpopular. I think the fliesstartleaving a pheromone smell to the container. Adding the several drops of dish detergent is what kills them. They generally congregate there like a singles bar, mate, lay eggs in the coconut water and drown/ get killed by dish soap in the process. You would think the sight of dozens of dead flies would tip them off but it only gets more popular over time. Add some more coconut water or just water as it evaporates then dump out and replace after about a month. Have your new coconut water getting ready by having it opened then left in room temperature for a few days. It doesn't have to be kept uncovered to go bad. Don't forget the dish washing liquid, just a few drops well mixed. Coconut oil is an altogether different thing but you can always try adding a bit to one and not the other as an experiment.
@@senoritablahblahblah Coconut water is more expensive and your formula will work. Coconut water is just extra attractive to them and it doesn't stink up the place as bad as your mixtures you can leave it as is for a month without being super gross.
But like how do you split up the flies into other cultures without them all just....
Leaving....
They’re flightless fruit flies, so as long as you tap the container you can minimize the number of escapees
@@thesaltyspitoon. I second that
_Why are they called flies if they're flightless_
@@thepinapple8829 Because they are fruit flies that have been engineered through radiation to get to that state.
_Then they should be called "Fruit Crawls". Things that cant cant fly shouldn't have fly in their name, it's misleading_
Wow. Nice timing. My culture has just about had it. Now I don't need to reorder!
I just bought my first culture lol.

So, after scrolling through the comments, wingless fruit flies... exist?! Are these the ones that are specifically and better used for feeding reptiles and carnivore insects?
Yes they are.
That's really cool! I didn't know wingless ones existed xD I just sorta assumed that hers were just hella lazy or something
Shouldn't they be called fruit walks then?
Jess Page
That
Was
Hilarious
I was wondering the same thing. I have to guess that these wingless/flightless flies were developed in a lab for scientific study. You can't just select for flightlessness or winglessness unless it's your full-time job. Fruitflies are The most studied animal used in labs and experiments: other than medical testing. We don't think of them like that though
Instead of gluing paper towel for a filter. I find cutting a layer from a disposable face mask works amazing because of how breathable it is. I even use them as filters on my spiders habitats and they provide perfect ventilation as if nothings there, whilst keeping my tiny 5ml sized jumping spiders and their food from escaping!
Thanks for the great idea
Or as my Dad called them, "Flute Fries".
Does he have a speech impediment? I'm not trying to be mean
@@hollowaychris77 Nah, he just swapped the first letters around to be funny.
He is a legend
Just want to say I've used your mix for over a year and it works great thanks for the info.😊
Emily , how much you've taught me is over the roof. Everyone else appreciates your skills and all the things you know! I was forward on getting a snake (or any other reptile) and since you've been the person I'll watch until I do , I really appreciate you. Thanks for your cleverness in reptiles.
You and Ed really do make a great team. You teach millions of viewers how to care for these precious animals.
Thank you a lot Emily!
Cinnamon also helps to stop mold from growing. At least it seems to work for me.
Cinnamon will also keep ants from breaking in and eating the flies.
at work we use a mix of oatmeal and fruits like apple, banana, pears and lots of carrots. we put everything through a mincer and start new colonies. it's way more expensive and takes more effort, so tbh i dont know why we do it that way...
but instead of throwing old fruits in the trash, you might wanna try using them too
I did that and it stinks really terrible. I killed all the flies with hot water and threw it away in the toilet but now the mixture of those rotten fruits stinks like hell.
@@youarelife3437 oh yeah it stinks, but don't all methods stink?
This video is most informative! I love how you included footage of the culture after it was both a few days and a week old.
I've watches this several years ago just out of curiosity but now I am getting into amphibian breeding and remembered this video! Thanks again for sharing! 😊
Me: **underaged** Mom, can you buy me beer?
Mom: **slaps me**

I've actually done this in the winter time when the smaller mantises have nothing to eat, and I find putting a piece of tomato at the bottom keeps them near the bottom, making it easier to remove a few.
I love the fast forward sound of the spoon scraping against the bowl.
I knew I was taking a risk but I decided to try making a couple of cultures 1 with baby food and another with yogurt. The one that used yogurt seemed to produce fruit flies about three times the original size however this was the most prone to becoming over grown with mold due to it being Dairy. The culture that use baby food produced fruit flies slightly larger than the original culture but had a lot less mold. My next experiment will probably make use of cat food or some sort of multivitamin
LOL I've had flightless fruit fly's escape while feeding my animals. Only to find them later all the way across the room up on my comp desk in my empty beer cans from the night. I'd say beer was a good choice for fly media additive.
Thank you for this video! I have accidentally (on purpose?) bred Green Anoles, and they are quite costly to feed via pet store cultures. This will come in handy until they are big enough to eat small crickets.
OMG SAME HERE LOL. Although, my egg is still in the egg stage.
I am not one to comment on videos but, I have learned a lot from you. Thanks!! Have a awesome n amazing Merry Christmas n Happy New Years too come. God bless!! Thanks, again.
My young praying mantis loves fruit flies ♡ I love how easy the wingless are to feed
fruit flies reading this comment cringe with terror
I love how simple this recipe is.thanks
to get the beginning fruit flies do you trap them or buy eggs from somewhere
+fuzzy wuzzy Buy a culture of flightless ones from a pet store
Hi
I’ve trapped all of mine for my Carolina Mantis
Ohh this makes me happy, I was so tense watching you transfer them as I had a house full of the flying sort by accident lol
Let some bananas get mushy and brown... even in the dead of winter and you still get the little sobs...
Fly: Hold my beer
Wow this helped so much! I would never think to add corn meal! My fruit flies are going to be so happy!!!!
I keep coming back to this video.... whys it so satisfying??
i like rewatching this over the years
I can't find "tich" on my measurement guide. Haha. Thank you guys for all the knowledge. Looking forward to the next videos.
getting some lemur leaf frogs in a few months and this video was very informative and made me feel more comfortable with the fact I'll have to keep fruit flies
Hi from England! 🏴 Such a helpful and easy-to-follow clip. Well done and many thanks. 😊
I don't know why this popped in my head but, those flies are all related...😩😂
Oh no😂
Good thinking. Now you are close to the truth that....so are all the humans 😂
Loves the quick tap dancing spoon noises lol
I used to take care of flies for a genetics class and what we used were just 3 ingredients. Yeast, a banana(saba), and then filter paper. Just mash the banana put in a little yeast then put the filter paper for absorbing the moisture. And we just used glass bottles which we sterilized by just putting them in boiling water. It should last about 1 to 2 months before you need to change it.
I love how she’s talks. I’m deathly afraid of snakes but I’m trying to educate myself on them. I’m so glad I found this channel
I had some rotting bananas, I used that, blended up dates and a tiny splash of vinegar and it worked great. You really can do just about anything eith them. So much fun!
I feel itchy all over seeing that lol, very informational though :)
I bought some fruit fly cultures and have been wanting to make my own, thank you
my whole kitchen works just fine sadly.
How on earth do you feed that to anything without having a fly infested homeXD
You have to get the flightless ones that way it will be near impossible for them to escape
That speeded up mixing is great asmr :>
Hi Emily, for my flies I use apple juice. Sparkling is fine. Grape and orange works as well
Thank you you are so smart God bless you and your family
I accidentally caused this in my car. I left a 6-pack in the backseat during a hot summer. It exploded as expected and fruit flies were EVERYWHERE. It took forever to cleanup.
I did not realise this would come in handy for pets but I'm glad I already follow this channel!
It works good. I did this with a can of carlsberg. The last couple of days I've seen some maggots and today I came into my room after work and saw that the container was full of flies. Just finished feeding a bunch to my American toadlets. They gobbled them up like crazy. So I'm going to have alot of them for my toadlets and my spiderlings
I wanted to make a fruit fly culture for my spiderlings so I consulted many recipes on youtube. I went with this one and now 2 weeks later I've had great success. My small storebought culture seems to have about tripled in size already and in another week or two I'll be ready to start a second culture.
Thank you for sharing! it's so hard/expensive to find hydei cultures where I live (shipping is expensive) so this is awesome to know in order to continue growing for myself.
Lol this made me feel like I was watching a cooking show
Thanks so much for making the video! I really needed this for my project😆
great information
Neat trick is using a sandblasting box when changing flying feeder flies. When I was younger I used to make fruit fly cultures of my own with native ones where I live. Only downside is they can fly so splitting up cultures was a nightmare as you can loose a bunch even cold stunned. But my brother had the hilarious idea of using sandblaster box to split up batches an what ever ones get out you can put one of our frogs/spiders in to 'clean up". It was surprisingly easy an inexpensive to make.
3:10 Haha I loved the sound the spoon made.
Honestly before I found this channel, I never even thought about getting a reptile, now I really want to buy a snake from you!! I hope I can save up enough money for one!
I think those maggots are under aged 😄
LOL !!
lol
Interesting. Have a blessed day
Just me? Or was the sped up spoon noise really satisfying
Those are creepy crawlers that give me nightmares 😬10/10
OMG thank you I needed that 😁
Great asmr!
I usually just use hummingbird nectar mixed in with cotton and some lettuce. Works well for a lot of things too, not just flies.
My flea jumping spider and I thank you for posting this. :)
We used to own geckos (they passed away a couple of years ago) and my mum actually used banana and I think syrup(?) along with some other things
Thank you so much 💗
Did this for AP Biology, so much fun!
Just taaaap it in. Give it a little tappy. Tap tap taparoo😂
Thank you you just made my poison frog keeping so much easier you're amazing
Best video ever!!!!!!
Looks delicious like if fried into a patty
1 of these kept my flies alive for almost 2 months! It all got eaten, but I had enough left over to start a new culture (I was away from home, my brother was supposed to refill the culture at the 1 month mark but he forgot)
I literally only clicked on this because of the thumbnail 😂 this was actually helpful tho, so I'll keep it in mind if I ever need it
There is nothing better than learning from someone with experience and demonstrating at the same time! How do you transfer flies without large numbers escaping?
I get them in my house when something goes bad. It's hilarious to watch someone trying to have fruit flies
Dont let your fruit fly’s to get drunk 😂😂😂love your vids I have learned so muchs😍😍😍
Me and probably everyone else raising slings thanks you for that
so i am getting a ✨ ghost mantis ✨ so I needed this
Cinnamon is a popular ingredient. Helps prevent mold and improves the aroma.
You can also use banana with agar and then add yeast after you put the medium in the pot. Worked for me, but my culture wasnt as big as this one
Does it smell? I culture micro worms for my fish and it smells awful
my mixture has fruits, which do not smell good when the maggots work on them, but not even half as bad as micro worms. I think the mix she uses doesnt smell as bad as mine, so you might wanna try it out. the flies will float on the surface though and will crawl out the tank when they reach the glass, so maybe they arent an alternative for your fish? Our tetras absolutly love the flies though
Larciell when mine get in the frogs lol water dish they cannot escape at all and they actually like ants bunch together in a clump to float and stay alive(the ones not at the bottom of the raft tho lol
I hate the scent of beer, so I'm pretty sure this culture would smell absolutely terrible to me.
This is my favorite fruitfly culture method thank you emily. Ive tried bananas and premade mix and they all smell so bad eventually this never smells but i will say my drawback is the cultures dont boom until 17ish days in but that could be my environment. ❤
5:18
OR how about we kill them with fire? that's a freakish amount of flies my goodness
Then that ruins the whole purpose of having them. What I would do (and going to do), is start lots of new cultures, and then sell the ones that you don't need anymore for $10 each!
instant mashed potatoes + beer + vinegar just sounds like a recipe for british cooking ngl
When i saw the big amount of the fruit flys for some reason i began sneezing a lot XD
We did this as an experiment in my middle school science class!! (Without the beer, im pretty sure lol) My group's... didn't turn out too well. But it was still a neat experience :D
Add apple cider vinegar instead of regular vinegar. Fruit flies love it. My mother even used apple cider vinegar mixed with soap to get rid of a fruit fly infestation in our house.
I’m the kind of person who raises massive fruit fly cultures and releases them into people whom I don’t like very much homes, or annoying family
I like this idea even better than glitter bombs.
I just made some right now. I use carlsberg beer and I put about and inch and a half on the bottom.
Hopefully its good
You do that math when I can’t even solve 1+1 XP
Thanks for this guide, me and my ant colonies thank you.
Sugar they love it
3:03 I don't know why, but I really like that sound.
I have a cat and two kids, why I am here... Because this is so interesting to me! I have basically binged your whole channel in the last three days.
Also have you tried subbing apple cider vinegar for your regular vinegar?
I use simply Vinegar, Milk and oatmeal. On top I use hay and I have a very old culture where I got 3 new ones from gave my friend a 4th and still I get lots and lots of fruitflies out of it. I Doesn't smell at all and it still gives new fruitflies, so I'm not gonna throw that one away. Now I put the fruitflies in the freezer who I still get out of it. Or else I would have to much to keep in life. Btw, I use them for ants, so thats why I'm able to freeze them
Great video. If I ever end up keeping Preying Mantises, I'll keep this in mind. The buggers are wild here in West Virginia, so it's a possibility.
A question - what is that straw like substrate you add on top of the potato mixture?
excelcior, which is fancy wood shavings. You can get it at any craft store. You can also use a couple coffee filters or some shredded paper. The maggots need it moist, but the flies need a dry place. And the presence of the excelsior or shredded paper also helps regulate the moisture in the media so it's not too wet.
Should I keep my common house gecko? He has a ton trust in me but doesn’t feel comfortable in his home (hermit crab cage...we didn’t know he was going to survive)
What do I need (that’s cheap) to make him love his home.
Here are some of the things I have with him:
-water bowl
-lamp
-hiding place
I spray his cage with water to make the ‘humid’ feel...but it just evaporates
How do I make my pet happy?
Pink salt , and sugar work as well
