I was saddened when I heard the bagpipes in the background and knew this was terminal. Great diagnosis for what appears to be a very rare type of problem. This video was like watching a mystery/drama movie - only better!
@marriedwithsmallengines The owner brought that saw in saying hard to start,it looks about impossible that that saw would work good at times and run poor at times,it just crossed my mind at the end of the day, great video,
Dear Erica, I'm 74 years young and worked in a chemical plant for 26 years. I learned a lot about chemicals, good and bad. To the point, any chemical that ends with "ene" is not to be handled with out the proper PPE (personal protective equipment). It's not the occasional exposure but the long term exposure that does damage to our skin, lungs and internal organs. Please wear good nitrile gloves when handling the saws. I enjoy your channel and would love to know that you will retire someday without workplace disabilities. If others snicker at your safety precautions, just smile and turn the cheek. John Matola-PA
Great channel! I've worked on my own small ( and large) engines for over 60 years and have been watching your channel for about a year now. You've given me insight on how to find and fix problems I've encountered especially with small 2 strokes. I've got a Stihl 260 that I absolutely love and your recent video helped me to know the best maintenance for it since I'm in Idaho and can't make it to your shop. Thank you!
Another first for me. Wow! That bundle of used saws is gold! Great score! This channel has become my #1 Stihl chainsaw repair go to! Awesome! Thanks Erica and Tyler.
The chainsaw investors crack another tough case! That was a cool diagnosis. As a side note, I priced out the Stihl LTR pressure-vac tester with all the accessories-carb blocks, etc. I found one on Ebay for $700 U.S.. Stihl branded tools are pricey as you have mentioned in the past. The Stihl fuel line tool is $45 U.S.. Thanks for a Saturday morning adventure on a cold winter morning.
Another mystery solved! It looked like it was in decent shape, which turned out to be misleading...that poor saw suffered a serious mishap at some point. Thank you for taking the time to show all of the steps in your process, and how to use the various tools, too. I really appreciate the level of detail! Tyler will have an ironman grip after using the pressure vac tool. ;)
Erica, I enjoy your hard work. I get a kick out of your Canadian broge. I was a cop here in North Dakota, very close to the border. We would have an invitational pistol shoot every fall. The entire graduating class at the RCMP academy would come down here to participate. Boy did those people love to party. They even taught us to play but darts. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
You really made a score on all those used saws from the tree service! That Stihl pressure/vacuum tester is built like a tank, all made from machined parts.
I’ve been playing with saws since the mid to late 80’s, I’ve never seen a crack like that before. Seen broken cooling fins but nothing worse. Can’t imagine that cylinder coming from the factory like that. Very interesting, thanks for showing it to us.
Good work, both of you. I have seen a crack similar on a husky. It was dropped out of a tree at about 50ft. If only equipment could talk 😊 Hang in there, I'm neck deep in chain sharpening at the moment. ❤
My guess - not defective from the factory (almost any QC process that included starting the saw would have caught that) but likely a latent casting defect that resulted in an actual failure as a result of either heating/cooling cycles or a fall (as you said). Trivia point: many operators will shut a very hot saw down immediately rather than let it idle for a few minutes to allow the saw to cool itself down with its own forced-air cooling through the cylinder vents. Not usually a fatal oversight but possibly that's the cause here.
Great as always. Appreciate your determination to get answers and share them with us. I think you were a little hard on the helper today, but he did take your flashlight ....... So I guess he deserved it. Thanks,
Erica, it's a good thing you don't collect old cars. at least you can will make money on the old saws. It was nice seeing that load of firewood, Since watching your videos my saws receive the spa treatment and tune ups.

@@StihlTyler I keep wondering about that saw. Sometimes, I've been very surprised by how easily some start after sitting for many years. I'd check for spark / clean points and add gas.
I usually press the like before I watch one of your videos. Never disappointed ! That saw must have taken some hit. Worth putting another cylinder casting on.
Hello Erica, I have not made it past the tree service saws arriving. But had to share that I would very much be interested in the 200T saws being on your bench. We have one and I would like to learn any more information about them I can. Thank you for sharing these videos with us.
An impact could have initiated a crack at the base of the cylinder, then followed by fatigue over time due to thermal cycling, ultimately leading to the development of a leak.
I have seen something similar to an original 066 cylinder that leaked in the same way six months after the saw was sold. It is undoubtedly a casting defect that is probably due to not being quick enough to fill the mold with liquid aluminum so it has been semi-solid in place. Stihl just replaced the customer's saw without protesting here. The cylinder on the ma 460 has had a weakness throughout its life, as I am pretty sure it will not crack right there if the saw has suffered mechanical damage.
Wow, I would have never expected that! That’s what makes the channel interesting! I have a 460VWZ that is from 2003 that I need to find the procedure of enlarging the fuel line pass through hole so I can properly install the green fuel line. This model is an excellent saw! This fits right in with Tinman's video this morning - the parts to buy for a big, run-to-death chainsaw.. Great to watch, as I have a similar 046 Magnum with running issues. The owner before me used it hard and got his money's worth.

But let’s be honest, it is an exeptionell TINY LITTLE saw, not a beast, can’t take the same load as these bigger saws. And these bigger saws, you just need them when you have a harder work to be done. I don’t think Stihl would have developed a 78cc saws (or bigger) if the 261 could take those loads as these saws. Maybe it is just here in Europe but I meet these people all the time being almost rude when they see a big saw. (Then they must go to the shop all the time with their 50cc saws because there is something wrong there all the time 😉) Thank you so much, hope you enjoyed your coffee, I have as well as I have had a good time watching this video! Take care guys! ❤
Excellent job💪💪, but did you know you can get flaw detector kit? Spray red die on, wipe it off, spray white stuff on, shows exactly where the crack is!! Welders use this technique all the time!! Any way you found the leak….well done!🥰🥰🍺👍👍👍
Personally I would get the 460 rebuilt, reason being is the 460 is a much better saw than the new 462. I would not care what it cost to rebuild it because of the older saws being much better than most of the crap stihl puts out today. Stihl quality has definately went downhill in recent years. They have a couple good pro saws in their lineup like the 362 and 500i. Everything else is crap.
That pile of trade in saws had some big boys in it. Can’t wait to see some of those brought back to service condition. Also, wonder who else plays the “guess the issue” game as you tell us about the patient’s symptoms.
Thanks Erica.

Peter, thank you so much for your comment and for watching! So glad you are here!
@ very glad for being here as well as your nice answer! I wanna have those 461’s! Is it just me or is it a harder one then the mew 462?
Bagpipes and Amazing Grace... taps :)
You got a bunch of good saws. Whish I was close, I'd be bothering you
Another great video! Sure seems like a top end will bring it back to life. Maybe even another 15 yrs?
Great Video
Thank you for watching!
Amazing video thank you so much ma'am!!
Thank you for watching!
Excellent job💪💪, but did you know you can get flaw detector kit? Spray red die on, wipe it off, spray white stuff on, shows exactly where the crack is!! Welders use this technique all the time!! Any way you found the leak….well done!🥰🥰🍺👍👍👍
Sad to see a large saw ruined and hope to see the owner want it repaired but cost is always an issue.
Haha!
