Much impressed by every camper like you who leave not a trace! Too often in UK people think it's OK to leave their fire place full of burnt out beer can, bottle tops and bottles. Thanks for the hints.
Great video and set up. I appreciate the challenges of setting up a bushcraft camp in the wind and rain. It can be very tough going. Thanks for showing us how you worked through it and sharing the information.
Hello blueGs,I alway's first put the tarp up when its raining so my gear stay's dry..When I go on a bushcraft trip I take alway's just one tarp or tenthalf with me for cover no extra poncho .And when its raining very hard and I do sleep in the Woods I take a rain jacket with me.I have to make a fire to get everything else dry again like trousers, socks etc .Nice video ,to see you go with minimal kit in to the forest.Greetings from Holland !
+Martin bushcraft Thanks a lot Martin, That's cool you go out even when it rains, love the mood of the forest when it does. Thanks for watching. Have a nice day. Guillaume
Liked that very realistic video for us here in the UK at the moment. On the smoke issue, I have found that a large (as tall as you can find) rock placed opposite your shelter will attract the smoke rather than the shelter doing it. Keep up the videos they are very good!
Always great to see someone doing a demo in the worst of conditions. It shows it can be done and how (at least in this circumstance). Thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the good work. ol greybeard dino ; - ) >
Well done. You got there eventually. With regards to what to wear after lighting your fire? I think you’re looking for a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist? Take sufficient gear with you, to keep warm and dry and build your shelter. I like to use my poncho as a groundsheet inside my tarp shelter, (do you have a poncho liner?) which I would erect in a more wrap around style on a wet and windy day. Positioning of the shelter is always important, with the position of your campfire to consider. If you really need a fire , that is. Why not cook with gas, or paraffin , to get warm food inside you. Light the fire when the rain stops ? Keep warm in your sleeping bag? Lots of options for you. Thank you for sharing this vid with us
I've been caught out in the rain while camping on more than a few occasions. I have found that having a dense canopy helps out on keeping the rain off. I have never been a big fan of the leanto tarp shelter mainly because it's so open. If I use a tarp I'll A frame it. Even then there's that problem of seepage. So I switched to a hammock and run a ridge line just in case I need to put a tarp up. Keeps me off the ground and the A frame tarp keeps me dry. As far as fires go.... only when necessary. And when I do, it's a fire pit, which tends direct smoke upwards. My other suggestion would be actually use a Dakota fire pit. Not much on warmth, but little to no smoke. Great for cooking or boiling water! The other bonus I found out was that a Dakota fire pit is pretty hard for rain to put out.
Thank you for sharing. I learn more for the "fails" and " lesson learned" videos than watching an expert setting up a shelter. Music was obnoxious but I'm old...
Thanks for watching mate. sorry about the music hard to please everyone. I guess ill have to go back at making my own for the soundtrack haha. Totally agree about the lesson learned videos i like them too. we all learn something whatever our knowledge is everytime we go in the wild. :) have a nice day.
I always carry a second, smaller light weight poncho for around camp. Good also for a wind break, dew or rainwater collection, extra warmth, pack cover, etc.
That's a good idea, i'm thinking on getting another , tougher with better grommets and straps for a '' do it all '' cover. I'll keep the light poncho to backup that.
Thanks for the video. For me, poncho as a shelter is a day hike gone wrong or where I expect only intermittent rain. I also carry garbage bags and a Mylar blanket if I need more cover.
I totally Agree, on a regular basis i have the poncho with me but not always the tarp. If needed i can improvise a shelter with it like you said. Also have a survival blanket in my kit. Thanks for watching :)
I can't speak for anyone else, but I have always carried two ponchos. I can wear one and use the other for a tarp, I can snap the two together and make a pup tent. Once I have all the wood I need gathered, I can string he second poncho as a tarp, and give myself moving around room. I can also hang it high enough to build a small fire directly under it, and save myself a lot of grief with wind and smoke. And fire that's getting rained on will smoke like mad. But I try to never, ever camp out where the wind can hit me, and I sure don't want the wind hitting my fire. Both are just asking for trouble. , directly, and unless I'm in a place where I can hang my poncho tarp almost parallel to the ground, such as on a hillside, I never hang the back so it's at ground level. I don't build a lean-to that way, either. It gives you almost no height or depth. At times, if I know the weather is going to be rainy for most of a trip, I slip a thin piece of aluminum into my pack, set it on stakes, and build my fire under that. Anyway, to me, the word "shelter means shelter from wind, and shelter from rain, right along with shelter from cold.
FYI - There is a way to use your poncho without getting wet as you make a tarp shelter with it. Basically, you tie a ridgeline and to it raise the corners of the poncho in front of you keeping your head covered by and in the hood. Tie each, apart, on the ridgeline. Then pull your head out, rotate the hood into a knot and push out the bottom corners as you would slant a tarp. It won't stop the wet on the ground already but more will not fall there. Well you asked...
Yep sounds good if you want to stay under the poncho all night. If you want to gather firewood then i guess you have to do that before setting up the shelter and that's it , then you're stuck under it. Like i said in the video if you only have the poncho it's ok but it's still not fun when you have to get out of the shelter without your rain gear. That being said your idea is pretty interesting, next time it's raining please make a video of how you do that it would be very interesting.
Hi bluesGs. I was doing some surfing of the bushcrafting channels & came across yours. Just wanted to take a sec & drop you a word by way of encouragement. Many thanks for everything that you do on this subject. Please keep up all the spectacular work & don't let the bad guys get you down. You are performing a valuable service & a duty to Humanity all across the World that you are not even aware of. Keep on punchin'. I have to agree with riverlightrider on the subject of the music, though. I know that you are experimenting, but may I respectfully make a suggestion ? Less is more. Let Nature be its own symphony. Make your vids in silence & allow your viewers to enjoy the music of the wild. You will be surprised at the wonderful effect, but to each his own I suppose. There is a German (Austrian ?) bushcrafter named Ben (Bushcraft Bear)who has the right idea. His vids are recorded in silence. He does not even say a word, and does not need to. The lessons of his vids are implicit in his actions. Beautiful, and so very therapeutic. I wish the same for you. All the best from Seb in Canada.
LordBane hi :) look at most of my videos. i didnt say a thing and let the sound of nature do the job.. but some people complained it was boring and asked me to talk more lol. true story. so i tried dufferent things im with you with the less is more.
I really admired your crossed feather stick technique for transporting the flame to the platform. Did you use the knife spine to fluff up the initial tinder stick and if so, do you know the type of wood? I don’t know about using a single military poncho as shelter and personal rainwear simultaneously; seems like it would be one or the other. ☹️ Ignore the naysayers. Your efforts speak for themselves. 👍🏽
Hi. Thans for the kind comment :) I fluffed up the stick with the spine of the knife, a sharp spine is a really good option in a knife. The wood is hazel if i remember correctly. Have a nice day.
@@bluesGs Thank you for your response and much appreciated....we don't have hazel in the Pacific Northwest (Canada). I think the closest thing is probably red alder but I'll try your technique I'm out in the rain (which we get a lot of out here). :)
+Voisin Thibault Paul Salut. Merci beaucoup !

I understand the concept of leave no trace but I wonder sometimes that if you just removed all your stuff, if the rest would not serve the next camper or even someone lost in the woods. Your comments would be appreciated on this.
+Win Davis Hi ! that's a very good thinking. I usually clean up my camp so it cannot be seen. (when I'm at home in the woods, I keep the wood for the next time I camp there) When we were in the alps there was wood left over for the fire so I put it upright, resting on a tree trunk, so it doesn't get much wet with rain and the ground. Some of it was in sight so the next people that camp there can use it. The fire pit however was cleaned up because I really don't like finding these when I walk in the woods. Hope that helps. Have a nice day. G

Adventures with Frodo I think poncho shelters are more of an emergency shelter. It is the only thing you have so it gives you a chance to sit or lay down and not get soaked.
The video is good... but the blaring music isn't my cup of tea... I watch videos like this when I'm n a mellow mood during the day, or getting ready to go to sleep at night... and here are the natural, peaceful sounds of the rain and fire and suddenly it comes on blasting and I have to leap up. I can't relax after that. You're certainly not the only one doing this, but if you feel a need for music, could you tone it down a few notches?
You're seriously asking him to change his videos because you don't approve of his music? Conceited much? This is his channel and his video, he didn't make it for you to sleep to. Sheesh
He did make it for people to watch. Riverlightrider is correct, people add music without any thought and often ruin an otherwise good video. Viewers select a video based on its content and then get surprised with music that does not fit. If music is so important then make a music video.
+Simon Nature - Bidouille Haha ^^ merci amigo.
***** O.K. I understand but then again, what is the point of all these type of videos then? Your reply is very naive. My understanding is that in all learning, one first learns the technique, then goes out and tries to replicate what one read or saw. You propose people go out into the woods without any knowledge what so ever? And just do what? Die? Cause they don't know anything about survival?
Hi :) I could've talk more to explain stuff , that I get. For example that the dead standing wood is dry even in the rain. Or that the fire elevated from the ground burns better without getting wet. In this video the point was not about everything I did but mainly how to setup the tarp to have good protection from the rain while alsto being protected from the wind and smoke. I also show that if people make a shelter with their poncho, they cannot go out and gather wood for the fire without getting wet (if it's the only waterproof clothe they have). I also show a nice ground sheath that I found, cheap light and inexpensive that I didn't see in any video so I wanted to share that. I also say that It could be used in a supershelter type shelter. At the end I show that I usually do the '' use no trave '' to leave a clean spot. Anyway If you have questions instead of '' I didn't lean anything '' ask, I answer every comment and try the help people if I can. If that was just a troll... well maybe someone will read this and see what to look for in the video. Have a nice day.
Hi. You are either a troll or very narrow minded. Using a firesteel is good training for fire skills. I have a flint and steel. And a lighter. And matches. And i like to practice the fire by friction. I go outside to learn stuff. It must be borring to know everything but if you do please make videos of your skills it will be very interesting. :)

He did make it for people to watch. Riverlightrider is correct, people add music without any thought and often ruin an otherwise good video. Viewers select a video based on its content and then get surprised with music that does not fit. If music is so important then make a music video.
Revernd Idaho Spud hi :) noted for next time. just trying stuff you know. pretty much all my first videos had nothing but birds for sountrack :)

+Simon Nature - Bidouille Haha ^^ merci amigo.
parfait!

@bluesGs what kind of knife is that?
+B0undless_HD Hi! it's a Fallkniven F1. good blade !
+bluesGs it certainly looks like it
thanks for watching =)
+bluesGs no problem. Glad to have a conversation with a TH-camr.
It's a pity my friend that your fire is in the open...it will get doused by the rain..
How often have your fire doused by rain ? Unless you live under a water fall or in monsoon area once it's properly lit and hot you'll be fine.
What knife is tha
Fallkniven F1
Great video but I never understood the whole leave no trace concept, animals leave traces of their being around an area and have been for thousands of years and as far as I'm concerned the earth is still doing fine.
Thanks. Nice try with the trolling (and if you are serious check out '' pollution '' on internet )

Rain in tropis forest
what's the full sentence ?
Knowing that the wind will always change direction…….. How can you make a Wind-Restraint shelter….. SHOW THAT…… Been there, done That…..
cool then do the damn video , that'd be a first for you, then we can talk :)
wind::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::sucks
plowpoint for bad weather
not my favorite with a small tarp like this. It can be done.
@@bluesGs sometimes you dont have an option of being comfortable.... cant stretch out ..... another option is to roll up in tarp and flop one corner over your face..... that rain on the tarp will make you sleep like a baby ..... you will find that rolling up in a tarp is warmer than pitching it ...... yup..... I know it's drier
@@DeeMoback Completely up to you. Do as you wish. Considering the weather and what i wanted to do (make a fire , enjoy being out, etc, i wasn't going to play burrito) In another situation that's an option.
@@bluesGs understood what you were doing.... enjoyed the vid
Why dont we do it the wolf way i hate the human way show more animal
Valerie Salgado hi. like making a fire like wolves do ? im not sure i know how. i do some stuff the style of dog sometimes but that's not really bushcraft :p
I didn't learn anything.
+Huevonious Maximus you'll learn much by doing stuff in the woods than watching videos on internet anyway.
*****
Have a nice day.

another one get a frickin lighter stop trying to be a hero I never bushcraft without at least 4 lighters on my person I am guarantied to start a fire
bluesGs I keep both, l practice with firesteel better at it. My lighters won't last forever!
