The Vietnamese people have a deep-seated patriotism that has been shaped over thousands of years of rising up against foreign invaders to secure independence. When the Vietnamese flood the streets with red flags bearing yellow stars, it is, in essence, their way of using football as a means to express their patriotism.
I was in Hanoi for the first game, watching it with about 100 locals, great game, great outcome! After the game a couple of us (another foreigner and I) decided to go for a walk around the lake (Hoan Kiem) before heading back to our hotels. Little did we know that we were about to witness 100 thousand?, 200 thousand? Vietnamese people ride circles around the lake on their motorbikes for the next 1.5-2 hours, celebrating like mad!! My face was hurting from smiling so much, it was awesome to be a part of that celebration! And no, I am not exaggerating as to the amount of motorbikes there were (I’m very good at math!). I watched the second game on Cat Ba Island, and after that victory, that won Vietnam the ASEAN Cup, there were perhaps 40-50 motorbikes circling the lake in front of my hotel, what a contrast (Cat Ba Town is a sleepy little town, at least it is presently, due to it being low season here). Congratulations Vietnam!! ⚽️🏆
You see, this is actually less about football/soccer but more about the pride and patriotism for their country. Many if not most people who join the street storming are not even soccer fans or watching soccer, they just join the crowds for the joy and excitement, and also because of pride. It's like an event.
Tôi là người Việt Nam, và bạn nói đúng... mọi người xuống đường chủ yếu vì niềm tự hào và lòng yêu nước là chủ yếu, nhưng không vì vậy mà nói người Việt Nam không yêu bóng đá.
Team sport like football is very similar to a war. So when Viet Nam beat a big team like Thailand, it make Vietnamese people really get excited. Same emotion when they beated the US in Vietnam war so far, they love their country much much after a victory.

We aren't really football crazy-nation. there are still many people who even don't know much about football. What we truly love is our National flag and our culture-history. We just need a reason to raise our flag
@ctvtony7104 why do you try to deny what a Vietnamese person said about their own country? 🤣 As he said, we don't really care about football with teams around the world like Japan, England, Germany, France, etc. competing with each other, so we don't really love football in general. It's because of our team that we watch this sport.
@@cynki5152 They are a really football crazy- nation and a really ownlove-nation. But they love their country even more. Saying they are not really crazy for football is wrong.

Nguyen xuan son is a Vietnamese citizen. Not just change his name. No difference to American football team have overseas born players. Nothing controversial about it.
Not controversial according to the rules or compared to China who have like six or seven Brazilian players in their squad, but I don't like that the biggest star on Vietnam's team does not have a drop of Vietnamese blood in his veins. I'm not blaming VFF or Xuan Son. I would have taken the citizenship too if it were me. They're just playing by the rules, but I do think FIFA's 5-year residency rule is dumb. I think players who represent a country, should either have parents/grandparents from there or have lived there from a very young age. Five years is not enough. On a side note, why is it that all the good Viet Kieu players seem to be goalkeepers?
@@Worminatordkregarding your issue or viet kiểu players, it’s simply a coincidence of keepers. The reality is that the naturalization proces is long and difficult and so viet kiêus don’t have the citizenship to play. You’d be surprised at how many players in europe that have Vietnamese ancestry or blood, well the vff can’t exactly get them to play if they don’t have citizenship. All viet kieus that play for Vietnam always go to Vietnam and play in the v league first. This problem just holds back the national team. Imagine if they actually naturalized viet kieus in europe. Filip Nguyễn was seeking citizenship for years…..never got it till he played in v league.
@@usersixnine347 I never realised it was that difficult for viet kieu to get citizenship. You would think the government would make it easier for anyone who has a genuine interest in representing and being an asset to the country, whether it's for football or other things. Of course the goalkeeper thing is just a coincidence. I just think it's a curious one.
Not quite like the EU. The Vietnamese love their national team, and they love watching European football, but sadly, most of them don't give a sh*t about the league. For example, Ho Chi Minh City has a population of about 10 million people. There is only one V-league 1 team here, and the average crowd is about 5-6,000 for home games. Other teams around the country get higher attendances, but I don't think any of them fill their stadiums every time.
Not necessarily. I've seen plenty of players jump right off the stretcher as soon as they reach the sideline. When you can literally see the guy's leg snapping, though, it's a different matter. Hopefully, it's not too complicated a fracture, but obviously, he's done for the season.
