      At the same time it seems that they made it easier and cheaper to repair.
      5:10 Shows that trigger potentiometers are now easily removable.
      5:47 Shows that now instead of two separate pieces (Metal rod and plastic hinge) it's now single plastic part, so it should be cheaper to produce and easier to replace)
      For single person doing repair on his gamepad it sure can be more troublesome, because now you need to source proper parts and know how to distinguish them.
      But for warranty repairs / repair services it will certainly save quite a lot in the long run.
      And to be 100% honest, it's not so hard to source proper parts if you know there is a difference.
      I repair 3DS and even now, when they are reached EOL it's still possible to source all kinds of replacements and sellers make a lot of instructions / warnings about which parts do you need and how can you find out if they are certainly the ones you require.

  • @mattbrookbank
    @mattbrookbank 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

    While your theory that they keep revising the triggers because they get alot of warranty requests is possible... moving from 1 metal and one plastic piece to 1 plastic piece sounds like a huge cost savings over the long haul... so another theory is that they over engineered the triggers originally, because they were worried about wear and tear, but found over time that the triggers didn't need to be as robust as they thought, and they could make then more cheaply with more plastic.

    I'd prefer the metal rod instead of the piece of plastic...... in the long run it will last longer..... the plastic rod will break more often than not....
    Furthermore i do not believe this change has anything to do with warranty repairs because of failing trigger mechanisms. This is all for bringing down cost. The metal rod alone will save them millions despite design cost.

      To be fair, I've never seen a broken plastic rod on any at least somewhat well-known brand controller even after years of use (except Gulikit, some folks had it broken like in a few days to weeks, which is clearly their infamous QC issue). So yeah, it's good to have a metal rod, but plastic do fine, except it may be a bit squeaky, but once again, easily solvable and rare.

    • @poopandfartjokes
      @poopandfartjokes 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      To be fair, the metal rod could cause issues being that it’s harder than the plastic cylinder. Maybe the trigger is less likely to break when the rod is made of the same material?

      And Joycons for Nintendo Switch are still higher priced even with Sony bumping up the price by $5. I'm not that bothered by not having hall effects for the price. The vast majority of gamers who buy consoles are casuals and kids. Most people who take gaming seriously just build PCs. And those left in the niche middle like me, who can't afford a PC but take gaming more seriously, want better components but companies don't need to waste more on parts most consumers won't get use from, and have the disadvantage of less sales because of increased prices that casuals don't want, and kids won't afford. However, I do believe 3rd party "pro controllers" and stuff like the dualsense edge should have hall effects, because then it's an add-on that fills that niche gap and justifies increased cost. All simple stuff to understand.

      revisions are usually to improve, streamlining processes... you may argue rod is a separate metallic piece which needs to be sourced etc, but maybe the difference is negligible in actual use... and theyve either tickened the plastic rod hence the slightly bigger hole and a single monolithic printed piece should mean its stronger not to mention cheaper in sourcing and manufacturing.... again we can go anal and deep dive the intentions but no one really knows...

    So I just got a PS5 Pro and it came with the "Gen5" controller. I also have a new unopened "Gen3" controller that I bought awhile ago on sale.
    Out of the box, brand new and fresh - the "Gen5" controller absolutely has lighter tension on the silicone pads for the face and bumper buttons which results in a pretty noticeable lesser resistance on button presses. The d-pad silicone however feels identical.
    Now of course this is anecdotal experience so it's not objective but I certainly prefer the feel of the buttons on the "Gen3" controller.

      Why would they do that when they have people buy controllers over and over because going through customer service is very tedious and annoying, they just make it as cheap as possible to manufacture (while bumping the retail price) but still as unreliable, also saw in a video that if by the time your controller gets faulty, if the writings on the back aren't readable (and you don't have a picture of the numbers like 99.99% of ppl) they won't replace the controller, how many Dual Sense users prefer to bite the bullet and just buy a new one with a flashy color that just released instead of repairing or going through customers service, it's not like there's not enough plastic in the oceans and everywhere, right?
      I believe the accessories market is incredibly profitable, and everything they do, they do on purpose, ofc they know about hall effect sensors but using that would be like selling tyres that can't puncture ever, see my point?
      If I were a Dual Sense user who plays a lot, I'd just buy Hall Effect sensors made for it and go ask a phone repair shop or whatever to install them for me then voilà, you'd pay more one time but have a controller that can last for years, unless you break it in a ragequit frenzy moment ofc.

    You should do a test on some games like Gran Turismo that require precise trigger input to avoid wheel spin to see if the new sensor improves accuracy. There's a difference between having the force feedback on and off with the older design from what I noticed. Having it off will register 100% input about 2/3rds through it's travel whereas having it on completely will have a 100% input register happen later in its travel. Perhaps the new 30th anniversary Edge will be a reliable example of a new revision for those units as well. Are there any outside physical differences in the size and ergonomics?

    "Why is Sony not addressing the drift issues?"

    Seriously, get a DualSense from Japan, model is CFI-ZCT1J and it is much sturdier than the version they sell to the rest of the world. Battery life is the same but just by holding them and using them I can tell the difference heck I noticed the difference when I used it without knowing the japanese model was better.

      Having gotten a Japanese PS5 model myself, the OG controller that came with is still going strong almost 2 years later.
      Now if they hadn't also glued the headphone jack to the board with mucus, it'd be the perfect all-rounder.

      @@1moblin2 Bro I'm not that old and I don't have stick drift issues with either of my 2 dualsense, its not about being too rough with them either some controllers have presented the issue out of the box while others have had a controller for a year of daily gaming and have had no issues, like me. Stop speaking like you know anybody, its embarrassing.
      I recommend the japanese controller because its definitely higher quality so it will last longer and for a 70$ piece of hardware it better fucking last a while.

      For some reason japanese corporations have far more respect towards their local audiences than any corporation worldwide does towards western audiences, doesn't matter what products they sell. I've heard PR and all that is a much bigger deal over there than in the west, and it shows in the end results.

    Is the touchpad on BDM-050 the same as the bdm-040 or bdm-030 or BDM-020? Could that part be swapped between models?

    How about controller latency between each generation? Is it the same or not?? Coz my bdm 20 feels more agile & precise than my bdm 30 controller that feels smoother but a bit sloppy
